It's good to have a sump (lower section) in any tank really just to help the pickup in corners/braking/accelleration.
At least you found it now and not when it's finished. Hopefully there is room under the tank to add a sump?

A sump for in tank pumps is pretty much a must have in my opinion. My tank is stainless, I used a stainless wine cooler from a charity shop chopped up. I'm sure you'll sort it with your usual skill. You're quite right so it beggars belief that didn't think of it. |

As I remember the base of the pump engages in a fitting in the bottom of the tank and the take off is in the base of the pump so with a couple of inches of fuel in the tank that should be more than sufficient for it to work. Thank you for that. I'll investigate. |

Maybe it’s only a problem on the first fill? I did wonder that too Glen but I haven't yet braved the cold workshop to fire the pump up with the car standing level. Thank you for your suggestion. |

Top man Glen, You were right on the money. I've just connected the battery to the pump and it is still pumping fuel round despite the car being level now. This is great news as i can move on.
Thinking about it, I had the tank made by a professional tank fabricator who knows his business and if a swirl pot were necessary he would have told me and fitted one. It is a brand new pump and I imagine that it just needed a while before it decided to pump.

Yeah sometimes they can struggle to evacuate the air inside them and start pumping. Glad it sorted itself out!

I cannot believe it is nearly a month since my last update and sadly still not much progress to report. You may remember that I ordered from the States, a threaded adapter for the Focus aircon compressor which eventually turned up after a very tortuous journey. After wending its way around the USA it shipped out from JFK and arrived in Heathrow where it stayed for four days. Next time it popped up it was in Tokyo Japan and after a brief rest was on its way again, this time to Coventry UK and from there it was delivered a couple of days later to me here in Devon. I thought at the time that 66$ shipping was a bit steep but turned out to be great value for a world tour!   The loom is now ready to be installed and pics will follow once I've worked out how and where to mount the fuse boxes. Space is always a problem but to compound things I have to find a place where the cabin fuse box won't foul the dashboard and that's yet another problem because it is still at the trimmers waiting to be finished. It has been there six months but the lady has long Covid so she has my sympathy and I'm certainly not going to pressure her. It will be done when it's done. |

I know how you feel about the painfully cold workshop! We're not heating the house at the moment so if we catch a chill it's hard to shake it. It's fine when you're actually out and moving, but getting out in the first place is the challenge!

Congratulations John, having been out for a blast in it with Andy is a very special car, and I was sorely tempted to buy it, but I know the Mrs would not have seen the beauty in it.
It definitely deserves its own thread.

Thank you Andrew, they say never meet your heroes or drive the car of your dreams but in this case the TR is everything and more that I hoped it would be and certainly not a disappointment. The PO is a man after my own heart and has, over the 30 years of his ownership, improved and upgraded it so that it is an absolute joy to drive particularly on twisty roads where it comes into its own.
I'm having a 123 Bluetooth distributor fitted and set up on a rolling road this week so it will be interesting to see if there is any improvement in performance. I'll report back on that.
Meanwhile, work continues on the project with a new aircon compressor fitted complete with the much travelled threaded union adapter. The steering column ended up out of line with the lower column as a result of final welding of the column support bracket and that has taken some days to rectify but all is well now.
The accelerator cable is now fitted both ends and ready for the first start up.
The finished dashboard is promised for delivery in a week's time having been away since the end of March last year. Lucky I wasn't in a hurry for it!

You're not wrong Roger. It started life as a LHD export to Canada and then came back to the UK at some point. Andy the previous owner lived and worked in Germany for many years where he campaigned the car on many rallies and extensive road trips throughout Europe. It was only after he retired and moved back to the UK that he converted it to RHD which is not a difficult job on the TR3. This would be at the beginning of 2022. A benefit to me is that it has a new steering rack as part and parcel of the conversion.

I'd like to source the mating half of the plug which is a Ford type on the aircon compressor. 2002 era I think. Can anyone help with identifying it please?   |
