I'm new here, so I thought I'd say hi.
It's great to see the retro scene getting such a forum, one make forums are sooooo boring - they all seem to end up being dominated by geeks who know what the correct part number is for the '78 base model or some such. The great thing about such a broad church as the retro scene is that nobody can know every last tedious fact about it, so hopefully that will free us of the geeks.
Anyhow, I'm without a retro ride at the moment, since my last mini turned to compost. What with the wife being pregnant I've not got a big budget, so I'm looking to buy something rear drive, cheap, solid and reliable. I kind of like the idea of doing something silly with a Volvo 300, not sure about those Renault engines though I've never owned a reliable french car. So it will probably have to be a 360.
Watch this space.

Hello!
Good stuff... We've discussed 300-series Volvos a few times on this forum! They've got lots of potential!

Not if he wants to touch it Micra, my mates sister had a slightly tuned R5 Turbo, she also had 4 engine rebuilds in 4 years, shes now onto VeeDubs and is getting on much better.

Welcome! I must say I have a soft spot for the Volvo 3 series, although I reckon you'd be better with a 1.7 (is that the 360?) Volvo 2.8 V6 transplant anyone?!? ;D ;D

welcome volvo 340, renualt engines, rwd ? R5 Turbo engine+rwd 340 could it work? ;D Now there's an idea, I think it's the same block so it should more or less bolt straight in. Hang on a mo. Now you mention it I think the volvo uses basically the same block as an R5 Turbo 2 Maxi. Shame you don't usually see those in the back of the local free ads!

Volvo 340 is a perfect choice for retro speed business,.. Front engine, Rear Wheel Drive, Rear Transaxle,.. not as heavy as everyone thinks. Eventually when finances were in a good shape a nice Volvo T5 turbo engine could be dropped in Welcome to the forum,..

Volvo 2.8 V6 transplant anyone?!? ;D ;D The 340 (and 343 and 345) were available with the 1.4 or 1.7 Renault engine. The 360 came with the 2 litre Volvo engine. 340's tend to come cheaper - which is good, but the 360 means that theirs a ready supply of parts for fitting bigger Volvo lumps. I'm currently doing loads of research on the net to see what's possible in terms of scrapyard engineering. I don't want to be paying a fortune for engine conversion parts, so the best bet would be something from Renault or Volvo that would bolt straight in without having to cough for special mounts or a custom bell housing or whatever.

What about a 1.7 turdblowa motor out of a horrible volvo 440? you should be able to get a whole running car for about £8. They are not mega powerful as standard (about 120 bhp i think) but i suspect they can be souped up pretty freakin cheaply.
