Right then, a big birthday for me this year and the original plan was a trip to Las Vega$ to watch the NASCAR Cup race, well that got canned due to the international lurgy. So the missus said I could have another toy (yipeeee). I never got around to replacing my Saab 9-3 convertible either so there’s a space on the drive and I thought I’d probably end up with another Allegro. Anyway after a conversation with my cousin at Christmas he was telling me how he was thinking of slimming down his collection (1912 Aveling & Porter Road Roller, Fergie TE20, Series 3 Landrover Safari and his ‘66 Morris Minor amongst other things). I expressed a passing interest in the moggy and never thought anymore about it until he rang me last week and said it’s mine for a “one off family price” if I want it. So perfect timing, just need to wait until the end of the month and I can bring it home (along with a load of spares). So here it is, 1966 Trafalgar Blue Morris Minor 1000 four door, he’s owned it for 17 years and rebuilt the engine a few years back, 23 thou on the clock but this is probably 123 thou or even 223 thou. I’ve always admired it but never really thought about owning it, or any other Morris Minor for that matter so we will have to see how this one goes. It’s not perfect but it’s not a snotter either, it needs a damn good clean and polish for starters, anyway I may have finally found something that the missus doesn’t mind going out in 😂 Wish me luck.....

That looks pretty smart! Always really liked the four doors for some reason (think it's the stainless window frames but possibly due to their scarcity compared to two doors) and one of my favourite Minor colours as well. Brilliant stuff. Looks great. I put disc brakes on mine and it made a world of difference. Strongly recommend this too. My first car was a '64 Minor van (so 1098 & the bigger drums), and whilst I loved the steering and handling balance, the brakes were appalling (even when freshly rebuilt...) - a 1930 Riley 9 pulls up better than a Morris 1000 (& is not slower either). On pressing the brake pedal, it seemed to want that command countersigned in triplicate before it would think about slowing down, so using the gearbox and engine braking was essential. I confess to having an itch for another Minor at some point, and if that ever happens, I will definately be fitting front disc brakes.

So I collected Doris the Morris as she is now called this morning and brought her home, I’ve never driven a Minor before but I giggled like a kid all the way home. So initial thoughts......rip out the A series and fit a MX5 motor, slam it and stick it on banded steels.......hmmmm As tempted as I am it’s staying standard and my cousin who owned it for 17 years previously to me would murder me in my sleep. 😂 All in all it’s in great shape, he took it through a MOT last week for me and it breezed it. It just needs a little fettling, I will get rid of the parking light and fit a fag lighter socket and remove the gauges as they don’t work, also as he permanently wears overalls the seats need a damn good clean. It would also benefit from new tail lights as they are rather cloudy and I’ll look into a disc brake conversion. Other than that I’m chuffed to bits.

Yes, I am with you on this. Leave it as it is and enjoy the burp from the exhaust when you change gear. You will get plenty of fun as it is. N

I’ve never driven a Minor before but I giggled like a kid all the way home. This is probably the best description of why I want another one! Btw, regarding addtional instruments, a Smiths dual oil pressure / water temp is well worth installing to replace those broken ones but then I really don't like not having full gauges! Mine was an early '64, so I used a cream faced one as this was more in line with the bronze faced speedo, but the normal black faced ones will look very inline with the black speedo on yours. I blanked off the driver's side glovebox so it didn't look like an add-on, to mount it there along with a matching tacho, but if running just the dual gauge, it could be mounted neatly under the dash, or just in a corner of the glovebox. Arggh.... I'm now off to look on ebay for a Minor. Must resist....

Way back when I was still in the car trade, I was going on a camping holiday to North Wales. At the time we'd just taken a Peugeot 504 Estate in which still had some rent in the screen, so it was pressed into duty. We filled it, all the camping gear plus inflatable dingy and outboard, and you know how capacious those 504s are. Anyway, after a couple of days it started popping out of gear as the linkages were badly worn. Called up the boss and he said bring it back and take something else. I nursed it back to the showroom near Manchester Airport and took the only other load carrier we had. Yes, a Minor Estate. On the homeward trip, after several aborted attempts at packing, we managed to get it all in, plus a kitten the ex had acquired! It brought us home through Snowdonia without missing a beat, albeit a bit light on the steering. A real little car that can. After that, if we ever had a Moggy in, I'd snaffle it and use it until it was sold. I love 'em! This one looks a pippin, enjoy it!

Had a chance to look through some of the boxes of spares that came with the car, four to be precise and a spare gearbox, he phoned me the other day and said he’d found a wooden crate with a couple of starter motors and a new dynamo in it. I’m going to have a good sort through and keep a couple of each item but the rest is going to be going with me to Newark Autojumble when it starts up again (hopefully in June). I’ve just not got the space to keep everything and I’m already full up with Allegro parts and old bikes 😳 Doris is running lovely though, although not put many miles on yet. Started to work through a few of the little jobs that need doing, first up remove the after market temp gauges that don’t work.

Had a go at cleaning the seats this afternoon, CIF a toothbrush and a sponge. Drivers seat compared to passenger seat (drivers seat was actually worse! 😳).

Phil TBH Phil I find the brakes adequate for the car, I’ve been use to driving old stuff for years so as long as I don’t try any heroic driving I reckon they will be ok, I may still look at a disc upgrade in the future though when my lad passes his test and wants to have a go. But yes I’ve bonded quickly with it because it’s such a solid base to start from. 👍

Doris the Morris with her younger relation, in truth there was actually only two years between the Minor ending its production life when the last vans and travellers were made in Birmingham in April 1971, and the Allegro rolling off the assembly line at Longbridge in April 1973. Other than the A series lump (of which my Allegro isn’t) there is no similarity what so ever. 😂

They get under your skin. There's a good following and club. Very simple to work on too. Mallory Park you say, this was mine at RRG in Mallory some years ago. Every blue one reminds me of mine.
