True, most DOHC head gasket / cyl head problems are purely down to people neglecting them!
8V I4 DOHC head + porting + Scorpio 2300 I4 bottom end + rolling road set up = 168BHP. Not a huge amount of work either...

The DOHC 8v pinto (not cossie) imho is a great engine if you're gonna stick it in the car and leave it stock. They make about 135bhp standard, and you can get more out of them but for the same money you might aswell use a cossie or zetec. Matt Real reason fo asking was interest in sierra's atm, and making them make more power = good. Also, I don't have the tools for stuff like an engine swap but turbo'ing should be easier in many ways.

Or the 2.0 16v dohc from the scorpio's...still starts with 135bhp. Or hunt for RS2000 parts as motor made 150bhp. Or buy cheap Ls400 I am going to be breaking a MkV RS2000 in the next few weeks - tweaked 170bhp engine less than 12 months since full rebuild. If you're interested.

Informative as always blitz, Pintos where those 'orrible things that caught fire a lot yes? (the cars not the patchy horses) Yup. The Naderites caught Ford out in court, when an internal memo was "produced" via skulduggery that showed management had done a cost-benefit analysis of x amount of steel protection versus x amount of injuries to passengers. Ford settled after losing in trial court. This horrorific equation-making of how much money to spend to avoid x amount of injury has led to a robust trade by lawyers in products liability. To the point that this week, the sole remaining new manufacturer of aero carbs has announced cessation of business due to lawsuits, where they are always named after a crash, but never held at fault, still costing them huge insurance premiums. Meanwhile, the Chicoms.........

How much are YBs going for these days? £1,500? :/ *n you'd spend that on a pinto trying to make the numbers I know...And the rest. Just genuinely curious about the cost :/ *n

A £1500 YB will need a rebuild if you want to trust it, it has more tuning potential than the other 2 litre for lumps but if your not gonna use that potential its an expensive and heavy lump of cast iron.
Its worth registering on turbosport, theres a lot of old school fords, but its an all cars forum, and not just turbos, LOTS of expertise on there and the are a friendly bunch that are happy to answer questions.

I've done some time modifying pintos for my old capri and 2 door sierra and it does get expensive when you're looking at making top ponies besides that everything weighs a ton as well Related but in no ways helpfull, a local National Hotrod builder I used to know previously worked for cosworth, back in the day, and had a RWD Mk3 escort with an alloy block pinto and one off head, I only saw it once but it was a pretty trick piece of kit

have a word with the likes of Vulcan, HPE, WPE, JEM, etc about a 2.1 pinto build, i know roughly the Harris' used to charge £1800 for a 185 spec engine thats using V6 pistons other odds and sods tuned head gave 180horses for a bit more you got purpose built pistons few other bits and got nearer the 200 mark if you want more than that they can be taken to 2.4 and around 240bhp......serious money though eventually i want a 185 spec in my anglia don't care what anyone says about what they weigh i will be quicker in a straight line PERIOD and i know alot of the big powered pinto's last the time being hammered up the strip not sure what they would be like daily or round a track, obviously need to invest in dry sump or whatever and super unleaded + octane is not strictly needed, pretty sure Andy Harris has been running on straight unleaded this season of course theres Zetecs you can buy the bits and bolt together a 180bhp engine but I'm no fan of the modern stuff purely because ive never seen them 'perform' down the strip also some have mentioned the Vauxhall XE there not all that expensive to get hold of lots of RWD conversions and give a reliable 150bhp its really a question of how deep are your pockets

You are right, and the answer is that they are probably not as deep as my dreams.

lots of people on loads of forums are always going on about big power pintos being the ultimate up the strip, possibly they are (they have had 40 odd years of development after all) but the newer duratecs are far better road engines, they use less juice, are lighter, have mucho better manners and last far longer between rebuilds.
best decide what you wanna do with the engine first i think.

What car is it for?

The Pinto OHC is more grunty than the Zetec down low. Runs out of huff topside, but then most cars aren't needing wound out to 8K rpm anyhow. I have an Escort Mk2 mate who took his EFI Zetec back out and stuck his YB back in. Hands down.
The ARCA shop from whom we bought that inventory built massaged and towered Pintos that regularly beat crate YBs at the roundy tracks. The SOHC can be made to haul azz too.
