(Grabbing your collars.., an aside...) No! No! No! Don't be telling the other toffs about YBs. (Turning back to the auience...) "Hey, I know, how about an SR20DETRiigtiibbsrevlet? Or a yank V8? Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket." This is the UK. YBs aren't a secret. Grizz - Volvo turbot? SAAB? *n Penski, I guess the whole thing will be driven by cost/hassle/reliability/economy/whatever else one worries about. Someone mentioned 30mpg, and 45mpg on a very good day... I can live with that..... Most importantly, when looking at options is to remember that I have zero loyalty to anything but a good outcome here.

Nah, Nighty. Pinto parts be cheap these days, if you buy used. Lots of people are off-loading analog Pintos because they are woodified over moderne digital moteurs.
For example, we bought out an ARCA machine shop full of Pinto spares, headers, pans, pistons, rods, cams, head and block cores, blibber and blabber, to fill half a semi truck. For less than the figure being tossed about, the whole lot.

use the newest 2 litre duratec, it'll make 200bhp quite easy and cheap, is lighter than the old xflow, will knock up 200,000 miles easily while doing really good mpg, and you can get one out of a crashed mondeo for 100 quid (plus it'll bolt onto the mazda 6 speed box out of the mx5)

quite a few old escorts being fitted with them now as they are so light, i think the sump must be a funny shape as lots of em are dry sumped in rwd applications, Cosworth do a 2.3 version, the rumour is that megasquirt and TB's will see the 2 litre make 180bhp + before you start playing with internals.

Got 2.1 pinto in the cortina on 45's big valve head race cam etc about 130bhp at the wheels - easy do that with a £50 mondeo zetec with side drafts or bike carbs and scrap yard bits. I am honestly contemplating pulling the pinto out of the cortina to replace it with a 2.0 zetec, should get the same power but more usable - will pull from idle and rev to 7000 where as the pinto does'nt wake up till 3500. I know power to weight is a big difference but the 1600 zetec Jo had in the old viva was never far behind me and the stock 1800 ( ok its got the blower) is a damn sight quicker than the cortina.

Hell, why don't we all just buy new cars? Old ones are such a PITA, aren't they?

Hell yes - Monza is finally in the garage after a monumental clear out/chucking session I got a shower backing it in inside is dripping with condensation (dripping is a understatment I got frapping wet!!!) it's now got a heater in it running on a timer to chime in every 15 mins for 30 mins to dry the bloody thing out

Are American pintos the same as the UK ones? They sure are. Where do you think the name "Pinto" came from for the SOHC? Except the problem here is with yer piccies, Sammie. They show a Lima 2.3L, not a Pinto. Not a single part of the Lima is common with the Pinto, not even the drain plug. The Lima is a hydraulic follower, 4 cam tower, and thinly counterweighted crank motor. The only Limas the UK ever saw were under the bonnet of Andy Rouse's XR.

The rally boys modified Pintos for years, IIRC anything more than 160-odd bhp is at the reliability limit if you stick with the SOHC head. I did see one pull over 200bhp on the rollers once but it didn't last long!! Most of the Mk2's still rallying at Clubman level have gone for the ubiquitous XE now, but I have seen a few running Vauxhall SOHC lumps out on road rallies. Sure someone here will know better than me, though. But no one really seems to have mentioned the DOHC, whats that like? Better I suspect, but how much? How would you reduce the compression, because I've heard that they're fairly easy to turbo, but high compression+turbo'ing = bad... Someone put info up about tuning the 2.0 dohc, options, costs, worth it, limits etc?!

The DOHC 8v pinto (not cossie) imho is a great engine if you're gonna stick it in the car and leave it stock. They make about 135bhp standard, and you can get more out of them but for the same money you might aswell use a cossie or zetec.

Or the 2.0 16v dohc from the scorpio's...still starts with 135bhp. Or hunt for RS2000 parts as motor made 150bhp. Or buy cheap Ls400

What you have to consider Grizz is that it´s RWD, you´ll need the gearbox/rear axle probably and you don´t have room to play around with. getting a readiator in there is problem enough... V6´s and V8´s are a definate no go unless you´re completely mad Would be interesting to know if there´s a RWD gearbox that fits the Duratec??

As far as I know any of the Mazda MX5 gearboxes should bolt straight onto it. This is the budget restoration of me mates mk1 escort thats had a duratec dropped in it. www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=108535Theres 20 odd pages of it though so heres a pic of the engine in the car, its a tallish engine, but if it fits in a mk1 escort with this much space around it it should fit most places.

how about a 1.7 puma engine. the sport version produces 155bhp, weighs nothing also, you could probably use one of those zetec rwd conversion kits, de-cat, cams, better exhaust and your looking at 170 id say ?

A 2.0 one in a Sierra makes 125bhp as standard. Someone on a Ford forum I used to frequent in my 2.0 DOHC Sierra driving days had one with a Turbo Technics conversion on it that was quite quick. Other than that, tuning parts are limted to exhausts and induction kits. The induction kit is worth it purely for the sound when you gun it. They have a cam chain rather than a belt that needs changing at about the 100,000 mile mark. They are also supposedly prone to head gasket problems though I've had 2 of them and never suffered and such problems. Including one which majorly overheated a few times due to a duff fan thermo switch.
