If you fancy going single winch have a look at the Foers Ibex system. From memory winch is mounted in the middle, winch rope goes to the back of the chassis and round a modified snatch block then back along the chassis under the cab and out via rollers at the front. I used to have a Foers Ibex with the center winching system. It is very clever, but it puts huge compression loads on the chassis ( or spaceframe in the case of the Ibex) Rumor at the time was several Land Rover owners tried to copy it with disastrous results.

Winching from the front is as per normal. To winch from the back you hook the winch rope on to a mount on the front and then pull the rear snatch block out and attach it to whatever you are winching. Gives you a 1 times pull from the front and a 2 times pull from the back without having to rethread the cable through the vehicle each time. The Foers page will probably make a lot more sense! Thanks for the info i will be sure to check that out. I see you have quite a collection of trucks? any pics?

downplating is just a form and a Ā£28 fee from memory, I'd get it weighed to make sure its feasible, though personally I'd do the c1 or even C test. my girlfriend did her car test in june 2019 then a C1 test in a 5t sprinter in September! (she had bought a lwb 511 in march ! ) Dunno if this is correct (it isnt from my experience) or i just got an idiot at the dvsa although i did get it passed onto someone more senior who said the same. I tried to downplated my 4.6t sprinter (ex riot van for carry 9 cops in gear - changed to a campervan)and sent all the information the internet said i needed from people who have done it before (forms and weighbridge cert etc) and it was denied. They said only way they can do it is if i get a recognised third party to supply the information and says its legit. They kept pointing me towards svtech (expensive) i found an old timer who supplied me with everything for Ā£100 ish. Love the mog.

Thanks for the info mate. My pal is a VOSA truck inspector so I'm hoping if he signed of a load of the documents with proof of weight etc it could work. Time will tell but id say I'm certainly taking enough weight out to make it viable.

If you are going to fit a winch, think about an hydraulic version; if you were to go that route, you could use the hydraulic system on the Unimog, and just sell off the un-used spool vales and pipework. Hydraulic winches are often fitted to ex-Electricity Board Land Rovers, and are not widely used elsewhere. usually very powerful, hence the Utilities using them.

Really great progress. That crawler gearbox is super cool. Now you've got the manual, and know what all the levers are, you might have multiple neutrals available. It might have slipped into a neutral back in the day. Dunno - but might be worth a look before the gearbox guru turns up ?

Wow, there's a blast from the past. Sharp speakers, I suppose I should really say a little blast. Great to see the progress, keep up the good work.

Finally the specialist is coming to diagnose and hopefully fix the Unimog gearbox next week. Trying to get the truck ready to use as soon as he has fixed it so I'm hunting down one roof catch and need to makes some plates up for it rear steel slots to sit in. I also bought some LED rear lights as the originals were broken. they were only Ā£13 delivered for the pair so hopefully they work ok. They are just trailer light but i liked the fact they have cages. I also need to order some numberplates, i can run black and silver which is nice due to age.

Nice progress, waiting to drive it must be painful! Ref back lights you probably know this but good chance you will need a digital flasher relay so indicators flash still. James

James Thanks mate yea apparently a 6ohm job will do Given the nature of the vehicle it would be best to fit the resistors next to the flasher switch in the cab (outputs to earth) rather than anywhere they can get wet.

Thanks. If they are water resistant should be fine, I'm gonna be hard pushed t submerge the unimog deep enough to cover the rear lights i think. But yes that maybe a good solution.
