Today I decided to make a start cutting the rust away on the worst bit to see how big this task is really going to be. But before cutting anything away I masked it up to make a template. I’ve never tried this method before so I’ve no idea how it will turn out or if I’ll find it useful down the line. Maybe I can just spray some green paint on this?.. It kind of held its shape once peeled... Slots cut to lay flat. You can see that I also marked the centers of the radius folds...

So next I cleaned back the paint to find the good metal so I could decide what can stay and what must go. Lots of scribbles... Deep breath and let’s go... Let’s keep cutting, yep that inner wing is a bit crusty but the inner sill is OK... Made a little template for that bit... And behind that it’s a little bit grotty too... Ok finally some solid metal... A collection of pieces to recreate... And a whopping great hole... I think that’s back to reasonably sound metal, hopefully I can put it back together again! -Steve-

just be a bit wary with these as they are the last knockings of the 'handbuilt' sportscars - the shells were built at Mayflower and shipped to Longbridge for completion, so some of the fit and finish really depends on what presses had been used for which run (look at a line-up of F and TFs, taking note of wing/bonnet lines....)

A good start, it could have been a lot worse, it does look to be corrosion from the outside in due to neglect rather than the tip of the iceburg when they rot from the inside out.

Maybe I can just spray some green paint on this?.. Nope. But you could soak it in fibreglass resin and then paint it green. Happy to help! Sorry to read about your troubles but well done on accidentally finding and rescuing a car with a bit of history. What are you doing working in a garage though? Proper northerners don't worry about a spot of rain. (That's why I was deported to the south.) James

marinanut - haha you have just given me my catch all excuse! No, it’s not my shoddy patch panel! - You do realise these were hand built and always have variable alignment, that’s how it’s supposed to be 😝 kevins - Yeah not too bad, I’d braved myself for worse. Sweetpea - Lol I was born a southerner, we moved when I was 9. You’d think after 30yrs oop north I’d have got the hang of it but alas you got me!

I took a bit of a punt on some ‘of the right time’ magazine’s that mentioned TF reviews. AutoExpress 692 - FAIL - Small half page TF160 review with a stock photo. TopGear March 2002 - FAIL - It sounds like they drove a 160 as well (which could have been mine) but the main article is of a TF115 in red, reg BU51 JFN! AutoHebdo Fevrier 2002 - FAIL - Very similar TF160 review car, same colour and tan interior (black seat infills), but a left hooker Italian plated car. Autocar 6th February 2002 - WIN - Yeah they featured my car again. This time in an mr2, mx5 shoot out. -Steve- PS. The most eagle eyed might notice it’s the same bunch of test cars as the last page of the CAR magazine review. Indeed the MR2 is the same car, but the MX5 is actually GJ51 OLW rather than GJ51 OLU so there.

Must be strange seeing your car in print, some brilliant pictures in there! Nice to see it getting some attention now

Nice save and interesting history. Love the masking tape profile - surely just repair with chicken wire and filler, slap on some black underseal, et voila! Have a bookmark, I feel this'll be a good thread to follow.

Have you heard of these guys? www.roughluckracing.com They're on the same industrial estate where I work and they have quite a few MGF's /TF's parked up at their unit, always seem busy. Might have some panels to help you out perhaps?

On a side note, just noticed the corolla SR on the first page. Had one of those in the eighties, brilliant car same colour as yours. Always loved the J stuff even back then.

davej - Yeah it’s pretty strange looking in the mags, but more strange looking in the garage and seeing it sat there. Morris63 - lol some people would, it would be quicker 🤔 I don't think I need anything from Rimmers right now, metal and brake lines before anything else. hsvmonaro - That’s handy to know and only an hour away. nigxl - The Corolla is cool but somewhat a sore point since breaking up with Danai last year. It was her dads car from new and we road tripped it from Greece together in 2007ish. Oh and its a total pain to get parts for. I’ll come back round to it in time.

Sorry I haven’t any TF news to report, I’ve been struggling with mood and motivation to be honest. I must sort out the welding gas as that’s my excuse at the moment.

Must say it's great to see an F of any variety getting some love mine's been cracking, but is in need of some work itself. It's always a bit tricky this time of year. Evening's start closing in, weather gets grottier (it's not just the cold but the rain too). I've definitely found I'm more productive during the summer. Makes you wonder how people like the Fins ever get anything done!

No TF progress to report but one excuse eliminated this week... And the regulator I’ve had sitting about since I bought the welder 10yr ago fits, yay. I was going to get a 20ltr bottle but they were out of stock so I had to settle for a 10ltr instead. Still replaces lots of little disposables! -Steve-

What a great story. I rather prefer the black dash modification.
Best wishes bringing it back,

Interesting story about 51 reg MGTF. I have just bought a pre production MGTF apparently 13 of 95 and would like to know more about the car.

Sorry but life took another unexpected turn in December last year. It has hit the finances and generally got me down, so car stuff has faded into the background for a while. MG progress is currently paused, but I'm making small steps towards making the 924 road legal again because that's a much easier prospect and I'm all for a quick win at the moment. I've not given up on the TF I just need to get some other 'stuff' in order first.
