hopeso The mate I bought the TF from has warned me about the disintegrating powers of the beach before. He razzed his fist car (Renault 5) about on a beach when he was a lad, it then failed it’s next MOT quite spectacularly despite being quite solid the year before. ChasR My mate bought it to save it as the family of the deceased didn’t know what to do with it. When he had to sell it we thought it would most likely be bought as an engine donor or parted out, so in buying it I felt like I was giving it another chance. I’m a bit of a sucker like that, my 924 was a similar lost cause when I got that and I’m still rattling about in that some 12yrs later. It’s quite a lucky car firstly to have survived at all and then to have been recognised for what it is. At least now it will see the road again. aveugotadonk I think I’ll have ago at making my own repair sections first but if they don’t turn out up to scratch I’ll pony up for the Mike Satur ones. I haven’t thought about any upgrades, too much rectification to think about first! grizz I found it quite therapeutic cleaning the seats and trim, I think it’s got the right balance of occupying the mind while not requiring too much concentration either. Good job really as it took flippin ages!

There wasn’t any MG activity over the weekend, though I did clear the workbench and tidy up garage which does indirectly help its cause. I suppose it’s time to show the rusty bits that need some work. (In clockwise formation) Offside Front wheel arch bubbly all the way round and up to the headlight... Offside front sill corner crusty + ventilation hole... Offside rear sill dented, very crusty and holed... Close up of crossmember ( yellow arrow above) very thin metal here... Nearside rear arch starting to go... Nearside rear sill bashed and crusty... Nearside front sill bubbly but not so crusty... And if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that once the spinny knot wheel has a nosy about more holes tend to appear. -Steve-

That box section running across the floor should be an interesting challenge, fair bit of work there!
Best of luck with it!

There's never less rust when you start digging, is there? You have your hands full - good luck!

I'd consider practice your painting skills on that.
It may not be perfect but it's very surprising what you can get out of a rattle can. I've had bodyshop results out on many occasions, even with metallics.
I'm not saying the match will be amazing but at least it will keep it OK. I'm happy to write how I do it later on.
Having a DA Sander/Polisher, decent sanding pads like 3M Trizact discs will help.

Most of that looks to be from the outside-in hopefully it won't be too bad when you cut it out / clean it up.

How the hell did that get its last MOT; Stevie Wonder?? Seriously, good find though, get on some MG forums and there should be some help there. Now I've decided not to strip my F for the van, if there is a world left after this Government has finished b*gg*ring about, I'll repair it and run it next year.

grizz I managed to do the 924 a bit at a time so that’s the plan this time round. There are so many skilled metals bashers on RR it’s easy to think that everything looks easy. Realistically I know it’s going to challenge me but I thinks it’s an achievable one. aveugotadonk It might be a hard bit, but maybe not? it’s a nice flat bit so let’s pretend that’ll be easy for now 😉 tdk Cheers I’m gonna need it. Alpina99 Knot wheels are brutal! ChasR It’s going to take me a while to get to paint but can I check back with you later for advice on painting with cans? I can borrow a sander but think it’s orbital rather than DA. kevins That would be a nice surprise but I know not to get my hopes up like that with rust. marinanut Maybe the garage were a bit soft on the PO in his later years but on the other hand I’ve had had cars go from cosmetic blistering one MOT to holes the next so maybe it just crossed that line. Enjoy the F, fingers crossed next year will be a good year for all. PS Just started this thread about welding gas so as not to clog the build thread up: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/216001/rental-gas-recommend-avoid-Steve-

I have a thread running on MG-rover.org and the owner of the next consecutive number plate BU51 JFY has said hello. Running the VIN tells me it was the next TF 160 made and the first X-power gray one. It was built 7days after mine but was registered on the same day... It’s another press car as the dealer stamp above confirms but it hasn’t surfaced in print anywhere yet. -Steve-

I have finally finished tidying up the garage and work bench so it might actually be possible to do some work in there. I haven’t made a start on the rust yet but it’s jacked up reasonably accessible now. I foresee many cramped hours in this little space. -Steve-

I have a real soft spot for the F and TF. Its great that you've discovered the provenance of this one, as you say if it hadn't been recognised for what it is I can't imagine it would have done much more than donate its engine.

I can't say I have seen this style before but they look good.

tom13 I guess they are most like these ones but not this brand: cjautosheywood.co.uk/product/adjustable-car-ramps-cr02/I’ve never managed to use them in their intended manor. The 924 and tf won’t drive up onto the stands, I need some lead on extensions really. And a bit like scissor jacks they never feel very good cranking them up with weight on them. I think pneumatic versions would be a lot better (But cost more). I got mine cheap on eBay but would have been disappointed if I had spent a lot on them.

I was just doing an image search for MG TF sills, because I’m trying to work out what they should look like rather than what I have! I didn’t really find the detail I was after but another picture of this car popped up. The ‘F’ owner spotted it back in the day when it was out being photographed for the Car magazine shoot. Quite interesting to see the camera mount on it. TF SightingI have pinged an email off the webmaster email but I don’t think it’s a live address anymore and it might have been a user posting rather than the site owner.

Both rear sills are fairly rusty, and have taken some knocks too. Before cutting away I need to make some patterns, and in order to do that properly I need to bash it roughly back into shape. But what shape should it be? (Drivers side rear sill - side view) I think the lip has been squashed here... (Drivers side rear sill - reverse birds eye view) The orange line is where I think the lip is folded flat but the arrow is a kink that may be original or may be damaged. I think it should be the shape of the blue line but it seems a bit odd to have the step in it. The other side is bashed too so not a great reference. I’ve posted this in a TF form too so I’m sure someone will know!
