	Compression has to be really quite low to stop firing and compression tests on cold engines that have been standing for months/years can be seriously disappointing. If you’ve got 60+psi on most pots it should run after a fashion and once you’ve got it thoroughly warm, another compression test will give a better indication.

	Oh well thats definitely gives me some hope it might go. It's just making sure everything is in the right places beforehand. But I'm going to rewire it first, just to be sure it's going to do what it needs to do without 60yr old wiring making bad things happen. Might not be absolutely necessary but I think it's worth it for this one I spent a bit of time cleaning up the voltage regulator while I was last playing, as all the connections were super crusty. Are these things pretty universal like a lot of the old wiring or are they more specific? As I'm not sure if I'll need a new one.

	Id just find an internally regulated alternator to adapt to fit it rather than use the external regulator. Far more reliable. Kubota used some really wee ones if space is a premium.

	Ditto what rich said. You'll have more, better regulated power, less wiring, tidier engine bay. There's a whole range of units to choose from that you could bag from a wreckers cheaply.

	Well this is a cool little thing. Have you contacted Daihatsu themselves to ask about parts? On something so rare they might be interested in helping. There are a few companies that make bespoke head gaskets, you can also buy sheets of the correct gasket material and make your own, I've never done a head gasket but it's the same material used for exhaust manifolds and is fine for small engines like yours.

	Oh wow yeah common sense really eluded me there... Obviously a newer internally regulated alternator is the answer. (This is the reason I'm here, so you guys can help me not be a dumbass 😂) Just so happens I have a bunch of engines lying around that still have alternators on, so I will take a few up when I next go. Thankfully because a lot of my spare engines are daihatsu based they have quite diddy alternators anyway, so size shouldn't be a problem. Cheers guys.
