Hey guys, first off, I want to give thanks to Pipey McGraw, for the tip off that led me to the whereabouts of this. Big love for that boyo. Yet another interesting old Daihatsu has joined the ranks in my broken car emporium. This time in the shape of this..   This being a 1967 Compagno Berlina Superdeluxe 1000, to give it its full title. Above is how it looked when I picked it up around Christmas time. Super rare and impossible to get parts for, so I'm pretty glad the parts are present to get it almost complete. Proper oddball, they sold very few in the few years they sold them here, and I have reason to believe this could well actually be the last one. Kinda hoping I'm wrong on that in some ways, as someone else having one that I could discuss the build with, as it seems any kind of manuals or whatever are also NLA, if they ever were to begin with.  Its a 4 cylinder engine that seems very reminiscent of the A-series lumps of the time, so I'm hoping it will be just as easy to get running. The engine is full of oil and still spins freely, which was a nice surprise given as far as I'm aware its been off the road for 25 years. Also, somehow the brakes have all seized in the off position, and it rolls freely, which is something I've never come across before, but also pretty useful. The interior is spectacular, and it is actually FAR less rusty than it looks.  But yeah, I'm currently fixing it up and will soon be taking the body off to do a complete chassis restoration on it. As well as weld up the front footwells, which are a tad less structurally sound than they should be.. So watch this space for that, and I will hopefully be updating this thread more regularly than I have my G11 and Domino threads on here, which are also due an update again. And I have a question. Full mint original restoration, or keep it tatty bodied, weld up only the necessary and slam it with some big carbs? What would you do? |

I think it deserves to be restored but then lowered but do stuff that is reversible. Maybe go two tone with a white roof? So many options 😁 at the end of the day it is getting saved, it is yours and it will be pretty unique whatever way it goes 😎

Cool. I wonder if they did a pickup version of this? My Dad had a diathasu pickup of about the same era. Engine looks very familiar,given it was donkeys years ago,and I was single digits old....😊

Cool. I wonder if they did a pickup version of this? My Dad had a diathasu pickup of about the same era. Engine looks very familiar,given it was donkeys years ago,and I was single digits old....😊 They did do a compagno ute yeah! I believe there is still a couple knocking about in Oz. |

Now that I know how to make the pics work, I will let you know how far I've got with it so far. I spent a fair while just going through the motions and working out what came with the car and what is still missing, as far as I'm aware I'm only really missing a few bits of trim and a set of bumpers, which I can live with for now. Bumpers aside everything seems to be there, and barring a seized brake master and probably wheel cylinders, everything seems to work.  I was also working out which bits were going to disintegrate if I looked at them wrong, and that transpires to be limited to the front footwells, a hole in the inner wing under the battery tray, and a small hole in the boot. Obviously the rear offside arch leaves something to be desired, but I am focusing first on what it needs to get an MOT ticket. I'm aware its exempt, but it would be pretty stupid to not get it a ticket before putting it on the road regardless. Thankfully because its ladder chassis the rules are a little different I believe so it needs to be solid around the body to chassis mounts which is where I get my above list to focus on first.  As you can see the floors are a little past their best, but to be honest before I started removing the interior I was expecting a lot worse. I have been preparing to take the body off to do the repairs, and will be welding some inch box about to stop the body bending when I cut the floor out, and have yet to decide where I'm going to do that where it wont get in the way of the floor repairs. Thankfully the roof is solid and around the windows is good so I've been lucky there. And it looks like the fuel tank has been replaced at some point, which was a pleasant surprise.   Its actually surprisingly solid in the rear given the boot lid seal is missing, the spare wheel well is solid, as are the rear corners. I've got all the body mounting bolts out with hand tools and not encountered a single seized bolt yet. So far its been pretty dreamy to work on. The only time I have had experience with separate chassis vehicles has been aircooled VW flavoured so this is a completely new ballpark for me. But every days a school day and I'm enjoying getting into it. |

I think restore it to original spec if possible, then lower it with sensible mods. Or survivor café racer with banded steels. Or restore it and café racer it. Or café racer it. Personally, id café racer it.

Made all kinds of weird and wonderful 3 wheeled pick up trucks and stuff. The Compagno being their first foray into 4 wheeled vehicles as far as I'm aware. To be honest most people hadnt heard of them before they got bought by Toyota in the early 70s.. And even now most people don't realise they made much before the GTti of the early 90s, even though their 80s stuff was glorious (I'm slightly biased, I have a lot of that.. haha) The Compagno was also the first Japanese car sold in the UK, which I thinks pretty interesting. I do very much enjoy the cafe racer idea though.... |

The rear lights look like 1100 items and the rear looks like one if those 3 box VW’s that I can’t remember the name of! Wonderful. Clean underneath. As is on top but in the cafe racer style with something highrevving on ITB’s. Please continue. P.  |

Oh!! Well I wasnt really expecting that.. Although if it was going to have been anywhere before, it was going to be here... Awesome to have a little more information, and additional confirmation that it hasnt moved at all since at least 2015.. And finding out who was responsible for that god awful primer everywhere idea.. Flatting that off is going to be fun. Just read he flatted a lot of the original paint off under that primer  Thats sad news. Means I'm definitely going to have to paint it which I didnt really want to do.. |

Given its rarety , it probably deserves a full nut and bolt concours resto... as that is probably unlikely given cost & parts availability i would be looking at creating a solid but pretty resto mod. Beg/steal/borrow bumpers and trims that would fit...respectable drop of paint...minor lows and "could have come like it" wide steels. Spruce the interior up and job done. One very very cool little thing.
