Right so I asked a question about dailying a 70's Beetle and the majority vote was it wouldn't be a great idea.
Taking that on board I sold my perfectly good Calypso Green Mk2 Golf and bought a non running Beetle unseen from Essex and had it transported up to Northampton.

So my Golf sold pretty quickly to a guy in Glasgow and was shipped up there. My kids were distraught but you know, they'll get over it. I'd seen this Beetle on Facebook a few weeks ago whilst searching and it was the best one I'd seen but out of budget. It had new pans and looked pretty solid. It had lots of bits I would have done if I'd have bought a stock bug such as early wings and boot lid, porsche seats etc. It was a non runner but the engine had a recent upgrade and rebuild to 1600 but needed the supplied 1600 carb rebuilding. The seller had lost storage and had another big project on so was wanted rid. I contacted him at the right time as he had been messed around as Facebook buyers like to do so a great deal as struck and it made its way up to Northampton filled with boxes of spare parts.

So the car looked good, floors and underside very solid but a bit of digging revealed a hole in the front inner arch (a known rot spot), a holed drivers side heater channel closure panel and an old fibreglassed repair to a rear inner arch. Not the worst and all bits I can do myself. The body was all in good shape but had had some rust bubbles rubbed down so has surface rust patches (or patina I believe it's called) and had a badly dented bonnet. Day one ended with a good wash and tidy. Trim adhesive removed with some petrol and elbow grease. Charome cleaned with some water and tinfoil, came up really well. Temporary original front wheel hubcaps got the same treatment. My first task is to get it running and stopping, then welding and finally body and interior.

I'm self employed as a Carpenter and have 2 children, 5 and 2. My wife is able to work as essential staff so I'm on stay at home dad duty. This means if I plan the day well I can get 2 hours spannering a day when my son has his nap. So to the non running bug. The engine looked very clean and new so supported the idea it had been recently rebuilt and upgraded. It had had been running twins but the po had put a single 1300 carb on which had a stuck float. In the spares was a very new looking 1600 carb which I rebuilt and after checking plugs and oil whacked on and tried to start. Nope not happening. Fuel pipe off and span over to find it was dry as a bone, despite fuel in the tank and a new looking pump. I took off the pump as it was the rebuildable type But unfortunately this will not be getting rebuilt as a chunk of the plunger was rattling around inside and fell out snapped. Armed with 60% off at GSF I ordered a new pump which ended up being the wrong type (for a dynamo engine, not alternator) I took it back and they gave me a better quality one with trade discount for cheaper than the stock one was, bonus. This was swiftly fitted and I had it running for a few minutes but the inlet manifold rubbers are toast so I have had to order some which has halted play for now.

Scored a new bonnet for £30 on ebay and collected locally. Going to weld up the trim holes and handle holes to go with the de handled boot. Will be rattle canned in matt black for now. The Beetle was originally a nice pale blue colour followed by a 90's turquoise cal look colour to its present day Yamaha R1 Purply Blue. Not sure where I'm going with the colour but everyone seems quite taken with the current hue. Kids have totally forgotten the Golf by now.

I like the plan to work whilst the youngest is asleep. With the light mornings and nights I find a very early start can get you an hour or a post bedtime start another hour.

I thought I'd make a start today by trying to remove the inlet manifold rubbers that were leaking. I've been reading lots of things on how hard it is so wasn't really looking forward to it. Being a twin port the manifold is in 3 parts which fit into each other and are sealed with rubber boots. To remove them I had to contort my meaty hands to unbolt the left hand section from the head. Then the centre section and heat risers to give enough space to slide everything over. This is the left hand one which was largely intact but starting to crack. The right hand one was totally destroyed and had been poorly bodged with a load of silicone which had seaped into the manifold too The rubbers are £3 each so I don't know why you would even bother Just waiting for my new ones to arrive now and we can get it back together and running.

Have you got the rear piece of tinware ?? Made big difference to the running when i left mine off once . Didn’t want to tickover or rev cleanly with the deck lid shut

Looks like a good project. While you're working on the engine it might be wise to replace the fuel lines as the cloth covered ones weap nicely as they crack internally. Safety wiring the inlet on the carb can't hurt either as they can have a tendency to pull out and curse word fuel all over the engine as they're just a push fit.

Cheers, fuel lines are all brand new so they will do me for now to get it up and running (got enough bits to be buying) The carb supplied is an Empi not a Solex so the inlet is a barbed screw in rather than a push fit. I've heard Empi is pretty curse word quality now a days but the carb looked good when I rebuilt it and it was free so I will have to see.

As I'm waiting for a stack of bits to be delivered, engine work has halted. It's been quite sunny today so I thought I'd get cracking on the new bonnet. £30 quid off ebay can't be bad. The guy said it had a bit of rust but compared to the one I have it looked miles better. My car had had a bit of a low speed impact which had caved in the area around the handle and it had loads of rust rubbed down. I'm stuck for work space at the minute so my body shop would be my back garden. Turns out this new bonnet is pretty curse word. A number of cracks along the edges and a fair bit of filler in the nose. Oh well, best get cracking. I took all the rust down to bare metal and treated with Vactan. I got my curse word mig out and welded the cracks up, welded up the trim holes as I wanted to lose the chrome trim and same with the handle holes. I welded a couple of studs on the back for the bonnet catch cable release. A few bits needed a skim of filler then a couple of coats of high build. I need to get some matt black tomorrow as a stop gap so I can get it fitted.

Have you checked the bonnet fits yet? Your bug has the sloping lights and early deck lid, and I can't tell from the photos if it has the associated long bonnet fitted too - if it has the one you've got wont fit the front valance

Have you checked the bonnet fits yet? Your bug has the sloping lights and early deck lid, and I can't tell from the photos if it has the associated long bonnet fitted too - if it has the one you've got wont fit the front valance And that leads me on to today. It started good with a visit from the postman and lots of bits I've ordered. Set to work fitting the manifold rubbers and rocker gaskets but a flat battery ended my plans of a steady idle. 356 style headlight grills fitted (only £10) for the moral boost. So I thought I'd get the bonnet fitted And Mike was correct, despite being a 74 it has early wings, front panel etc so it also needs a long bonnet. After much swearing and procrastinating I thought I'd give fixing my damaged bonnet a go. Hammer and dolley and its actually pretty mint. Will need a tiny skim of filler tomorrow but actually pretty chuffed. The backdating doesn't end there tho as the side trim holes have been enlarged meaning the thin trim and clips that I've bought also won't fit. Oh well.

Looks like a nice project! I know your pain when it comes to modified beetles! I've had some issues with mine on the wiring front before being replaced but alot of my switches i found are from a later bug which have been replaced now.

Being my 1st beetle it's been difficult to spot the pre '67 bits (of which there are lots) which has led to a lot of wrong orders. It makes my beetle even more of a bargain really as all the bits aren't cheap. Currently going through the boxes of stuff that came with it and sorting out what can be sold on and what I have missing.

In todays exciting installment, I managed to get a reasonable finish on the bonnet. The dents hammered out really well and needed just a tiny skim of filler. I'm trying out this primer called Bonda which doesn't let moisture in as painting is not going to be for a while. Got it fitted and looks much better although it looks like it's going to be unintentionally rat look for a while. I fitted the charged battery and after a tinker with the auto choke I finally managed to get it running and idling which was satisfying. The rocker covers are now leak free with the new gaskets but the oil filler is curse word out. The special tool to remove the slotted nut is unavailable everywhere so I slotted an old box spanner and tacked a bit of flat steel in it but it just bent so I'm stuck for a bit.

Looks like a fun project! Empi stuff used to be brilliant in the 60s and 70s, then the name got sold and was used on cheap Taiwanese chrome carp, but over the last few year the name has changed hands again and it seems to be decent stuff now, a lot of it made in USA. I say to anyone with a Beetle that the first big mod should be twin carbs - 36DRLA or IDFs are ideal. Really wakes them up, makes them more efficient and easier to live with. I quite like the ratty racer look - maybe some faded number circles on the doors?
