My Fulvia project has been in 'lockdown' for ages already! Still waiting for the Ombudsman to gain a "view", 17 months on!
The main chassis work is done:
New floors, reinforced sills, replaced transverse chassis box (beneath rear seat). Outer shell is awaiting blasting and wing replacement, then paint, but no money for that now. As a self-employed drummer who's work has all just been cancelled, I'm skint. However, the good news is that there's been time for all the silly little jobs:
~ bespoke exhaust system/mounts ~ revised S2 to S1 rear brakes (Zeus) ~ totally revised Kügelfischer injection drive ~ totally revised subframe mount system ~ bespoke dash/instrumentation ~ uprated fuel tank ~ new seats and mounts ~ rebuilt engine ~ rebuilt gearbox ~ bespoke throttle linkage ~ bespoke enrichment control linkage
Shall I go on?

Perhaps I should have said that this project came as the result of a big shunt in YMO49F, in October 2018. RPC786E is a S1 rhd shell I found at the start of 2019, that I'm building as a tribute to the old car, which I'd had for 31 years! The 'new' car will be lighter, stronger, and quicker, but will look very much the same.

A fact that's been ignored for a very long time. But watching the market for the last 35 years, this is suddenly changing! I'm delighted, but not from an investment point of view, but just that everyone really needs to know, and perhaps they're getting there now :-) I've just "added pictures", which may take some time

Looking forward to more. Surprised you didn’t go with a Group 4 style filler. I think it would suit your car perfectly.

Looking forward to more. Surprised you didn’t go with a Group 4 style filler. I think it would suit your car perfectly. The Works 1.3HFs used this method, and tbh I prefer it to having a filler exposed to tampering etc. At 6'1", it helps when filling up. The original position is too low. I'm not building a racecar, but a competition-biased road car.

I'm looking forward to watching this build unfold, even if it will just make me miss my Fulvia even more!
Looks like it should be pretty special when it's done. Sorry to hear of the demise of your old Fulvia.

Sorry to hear of the demise of your old Fulvia. Thanks. The accident was a bit terminal, sadly. The car was destroyed, and I was very lucky to survive, they said. I'm repaired now, but missing driving the Fulvia!

A bit of background:
The car pictured in my profile was a 1967 S1 Fulvia Rallye 1.3, donated to me by an old friend of the family, who'd had it from new, but the MOT was going to be too expensive for him to persist. Having just written off my first Fulvia, a S2 1.3/1.6 hybrid (long story so I won't go there!), this came at the right time!
By January '88, the car was welded up and ready to drive, and was upgraded to 1.6HF spec., using the engine, and all the correct suspension parts from Barry Waterhouse's racecar.
At this stage, my developments also included very extensive exploratory work on exhaust manifolds and systems. I realised that the Fulvia V4 lived and died by it's exhaust manifold!
The old 1.6 engine didn't last very long, due to careless dropping of a valve, so I had to think again.
This involved boring a 1.3 block out to accomodate oversize 1.6 pistons (82.4mm), and a gasflowed, big valve 1.3 head with BW's race cams. The development also involved the first iteration of the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system. This came out of a '71 BMW 2002Tii, which was from near enough the same era. I was, and am still determined not to modernise.
1486cc and great fun.... for a very short time, due to bore wall thinness! Next came 81mm hi-comp pistons, a remapped fuel curve, programmable electronic ignition (ok this is modern!), Kent Rally profile cams, dramatic exhaust work, and extensive gas flowing.
1436cc, 132bhp and 99 lbs/ft of torque at 7350rpm About 50% up on a std 1.3, and about 15% up on a std 1.6HF I really enjoyed driving this car, which I reckon was one of the quickest in the Country.
The new car, in development now, should give me a marked increase in performance, but I won't suggest any figures until I can prove it. I'm aiming for 100bhp/litre, which the Works never achieved in period.
I'll keep updating this thread, as it progresses. There are a lot of pics that I've been having trouble uploading.

Newly skimmed and painted block, and lightweight flywheel Natty cable splitter from an Aprilia (Italian) bike. The only way I could see to syncronise the throttle bodies with the injection pump Here's a YouTube link showing it in action: Sill reinforcement Zeus made the Dunlop piston/cylinder assemblies, using anodised aluminium and stainless pistons. They utilise a modern seal system which is far superior to the original Dunlop system

Never seen an engine block like that before - can you explain it for the uneducated please? It's a monoblock narrow angle (12°) V4. The 2 'banks' share one head and twin cams. Each cam operating the valves by reaching across the head, effectively. Hard to explain, but I've probably got a shot of the assembled head, somewhere.

The Lancia narrow angle V engine is a rather interesting piece of design, one they came up with in the early 20s and refined though to the Fulvia's engine which is the last of the design. It's essentially like a 2v hemi DOHC inline 4 engine, that has been concertinaed down to make it much more compact. It is a V4 (around 13° V angle in the 1.3 Fulvia engine) but the crank is offset so it still fires at an even 180 degree firing pattern. The inlet cam serves all 4 cylinders with 2 rocker arms facing one side of the cam and 2 facing the other direction to cover both banks. Likewise the exhaust cam also serves all 4 cylinders with a similar arrangement. Similarly 2 of the cylinder have a short inlet tract and a long exhaust port, and the other 2 have a long inlet and short exhaust port. VW basically ripped off the Lancia design to create their VR6 engine, which later evolved into the W16 engine that's used in the Veyron. So the little Lancia lump is practically a 1/4 of a Veyron engine Jokes aside, it's a lovely little characterful engine that makes a great noise and is fun to drive.
