Err a bit too late, but the front end is the same as 986 Boxster. A firm called Douglas Valley Breakers are a favourite among the Boxster financially challenged owners group (includes me). The 996 and Boxster share a lot of interior components as well up to the B-pillar. When Porsche brought in a consultant from Toyota he found they were literally going to parts bins to find stuff and there was little modularity so when the 9x6 series were made they started using common parts which helped them from going under. Hi Duggers The air intake I sourced actually came from DVB, can’t fault them on the description or speed of delivery. I have a few other bits of plastic I’d like to source for the front compartment so will drop them an email and see if they can help.

A 911 is a daily, why would you ever put it in storage? As for too low... have a look at the boys upgrading their GT3 and RS suspension for KWV etc and throw that on. Instant lows and no problems with speed bumps, well maybe a little front splitter scraping but nothing to worry about. Drove mine daily so man up! As for the wheels, revisiting the pictures above definitely the right choice. Looking forward to he next instalment. P. Real Estate is the answer I’m afraid, I use to be a parking magnet with drive way and garage space a plenty and the world was automotive heaven 🤡 I then decided one day my then wife and I had no future and thus followed a curse word And expensive three years Culminating in the sale of the mother ship. I purchased a big new box off plan as at that point I was working Outside of the U.K. 3 weeks of each month so it made sense rather than trailing around Pre loved homes..... in hindsight I wish I had not purchased a new build as it has as much soul and character as the Spice Girls!!! Part of the contract is a clause relating to parking and although my garage being larger than average could easily accommodate my Range Rover L322 with a driveway in front I’m constantly playing valet parking moving stuff around and have four cars at home. Sorry to bore but getting to the point, although I live in a cul de sac at the end and have a ‘bay’ (technical term for bit of tarmac) outside my house it is for visitors and not residents!!!! Now, we would all go so what and not give sh1t, however the Management Company in charge of the land have and are apparently keep receiving complaints (unlikely as my neighbours don’t give a sh1t either) and send me letters!!! The idea of storage is to placate the natives and rotate the stock as it were, on the plus side as it is a private development and not handed over to the council or highways I can park a car with no tax, MOT or insurance and no one can so diddly squat. I do like driving it immensely but find I do go rather quickly which is probably why I’m struggling with my local roads, pot holes, cyclists etc etc.

Ah... Why not sell the house and buy an industrial unit to store your toys in along with your 'mobile home' for the week you are in the uk? A very good friend of mine did exactly this after parting from Cruela De Ville and buying a 4 or 6 (cant remember exactly how many) unit industrial estate, one of which he keeps his race cars etc in and the others he rents out to Motorsport companies. He has one of those very large motor homes parked in the unit for 'on site' security. Never have you met a happier man. P.

Differently Maybe..... or no difference at all.... Going old Sokol tonight with Holstein Pils nice and icy from the freezer to complement quick and dirty BBQ burgers to keep the troops happy. A few fragments on the magnetic diff plug but nothing to complain apart, oily a little dirty but nothing to write home apart.... still a little whiney at speed but peace of mind and a tick in the box. A few of the smaller under tray plastics are mangled / properly buggered so I will hunt for some replacements from the cheapest source... Have a nice evening....

Porsche Tax.......it’s a beautiful thing, a friend of mine has been having his 996.2 (same year as mine but facelifted, more power, more weight and frightening electronics) serviced at a marque specialist to keep the provenance and history when he sells it. He asked how much my spark plugs were and I think I paid £68 for 6 from design911 with some form of discount thrown in, his marque specialist charged him an eye popping £438 for plugs and labour..... WTF??? That’s £140 labour and £50 per plug!!! My oil service parts with me sourcing them came in at around £70 with the lads charging me half an hour labour at around £40, marque specialist ...... £327......
In my book plugs are plugs and an oil service is an oil service unless being performed by carol vordeman and geri haliwell then I can understand the premium, in my mind adhering to regular maintenance is the key.
Back to Porsche Tax, those lovely bits of plastic in my previous post are £20 each so that’s £80 on aerodynamic aids being ordered from rosepassion in Europe as they seem to be the only supplier with stock, once arrived and I’ve lashed around on the floor like a turtle on its back fitting them I hope to report greater high speed stability and poised handling while weaving around cyclists........ clearly I maybe delusional.

Simple things, simple science......... today is mainly fruit based non alcoholic drinks with fruits of the garden and Waitrose, I would however recommend not using unripened gooseberries....... I fear an evening of bowel movements approaching!! To business, the bits of aerodynamic plastics which have sat on my desk for a while were fitted this morning... I doubt I will notice the benefits of the nose being planted But time will tell, also had a coffin arm replaced to overcome the clonking several posts up.. And my condensers still condensing.. The list of ‘todo’ is ever changing and I will try to update it later.

Crisp Cold Carlsberg Export...... lovely after a hard day in the Garden Office!
The 911 is still performing as one would expect and due to bus restrictions for the Bin Lids is being used as daily child transport to and from school with the weather being good, strangely eldest child does not like my pickup 🤔
Daily service has highlighted 3 issues. Firstly the oil leak from the rocker cover is becoming more noticeable to the point the Porker is booked in next week to have the rocker cover removed, sealant removed and replaced. Secondly with more spirited driving the tired engine mount that was not replaced due to lack of space now will be as the exhaust has to be removed for the rocker cover. Thirdly the drone from I think the near side front is getting worse, the diff oil service changed nothing so assume it is either a wheel bearing or possibly a tired/old tyre causing the drone.... could be an expensive week but systematically sorting the issues really does show how rewarding to own and drive these 996’s are.
I tried to post some moody 911 shots I took this evening but it looks more like a bad eBay advert!!! I will try to take some after the school run in the morning......
Until then Beer is called for to wash down tonight’s plant based burgers!!!

Great wheel choice. What's on the menu? Enjoy the food and drink updates. Tofu stir fry tonight with a sweet chilli sauce, been using some of the Garden produce that makes it all that bit nicer. I opted for a bottle of cold Guinness as the appetiser/cooking companion. In a rare occasion girlfriend battenberg decided to join in wine so I opted for a white Zinfandel with strawberry overtones to complement the rush of sweet chilli!! I have a early start in the morning so glad to see it’s only a ten percenter, I Can guarantee I will finish the evening with a family sized G&T (Bulldog) while waiting for the Dog to pump out......... Loving the warm weather at the moment..... Thanks for reading....

What the Cluck....... exactly what I thought as I was preparing the vegetarian duck wraps with finely diced spring onion and cucumber from the garden to be served with plum or hoisin sauce and rather than the small fiddly wraps went for kiddies wraps from a supermarket of your choice. All rather tasty and washed down with some Abbot Ale this evening..... like any Chinese I suspect I’ll be raiding the cupboards later for cheese and crackers, have some lovely tomato and piri piri chutney to accompany it. Wish I had a good port as the costs are spiralling on the Green Machines Oil Leak and a healthy anaesthetic is required. The strip down commenced and all coil packs are beyond the best being cracked, exhaust gasket amongst others needed and spark plug tubes also, the boys at AR Automotive in Chinnor who are carrying out the work called Design911 to order the parts however they have a 10 Day lead time so an alternative supplier in the form of euro car parts were used. Below are a few photos I took after work today: I have no idea the order they have arrived in, but we have half a eurocupGT exhaust on the bench, a rear calliper and disk that are next on the list to be replaced along with the other three, a rocker cover awaiting cleaning and half a flat six 3.4 litre awaiting assembly. It still blows my mind that back in 1998 Porsche had a normally aspirated 3.4l engine pushing 300BHP that not only gave then super car performance but also reliability to rival the Japanese. Twenty years on yes it may have its expensive moments but most vehicles do of this pedigree, I remember having a 1998 Chimera at 6 years old that needed welding!,,, We digress, once the engine is back together the engine mount will be replaced and wheel bearings investigated, no rush as the MOT has expired and the earliest I can get it booked in is the 9th October...... Success though, no port but have found some Sherry to have with black bomber cheddar cheese on some fruit cake....... it may sound mad but try it....... Thanks for reading.

A quick update on the above.....
The offending engine mount head snapped leaving the shaft in the captive nut, so a specialist is being drafted in on Wednesday to drill it out, their is practically zero access so the specialist has drill bits and tools made from unobtainium to tackle the issue. Quoted at maximum of £150 plus VAT so I suspect a bill of £180 on the way for that small piece of highly skillfull work.
That will be the oil leak and engine mount off the list and hopefully just leave the wheel bearing investigation, as it’s 4WD it’s difficult to spin them up and check for ‘noise’, they have no significant lateral play in them so I’m going to look at replacement costs if the bullet has to be bitten to replace them both.
I cannot thank the lads at AR Automotive in Chinnor enough for taking on the work and persevering where most garages would just stick to bread and butter work, I am looking forward to stretching the old girls legs on the school run again as my Derv Burner although thoroughly competent can be a little dull and the truck doesn’t put as much as a smile on the face!
I have the joys of working west coast American hours this week so dinner will be around midnight hence no culinary updates but am looking forward to a hot chocolate with baileys and a slice of battenberg!

Well.... it runs and after the monumental 3/4 mile drive back to my house it does not appear to be leaking anymore, the thread doctor did his stuff and all appears to be a little tighter in the rear with less of a audible and physical noise when manoeuvring speed bumps etc with the 996 RS Engine mounts installed on both sides. Any wheel bearing issues could not be identified but with brakes and callipers on the list for spring I may bight the bullet and get them both replaced for peace of mind, the bearings are around £80 per side so with labour on top will all add up, but as I said peace of mind and it won’t be until March hopefully.
I mentioned in a previous entry about garaging the 911 over the winter, a friend has offered space for this and the mini for a reasonable (considering where I live and storage is as rare as hens teeth) 50 quid a month each so they will be out of site and mind mid November..... first of all is MOT day for the 911 tomorrow which will be a mere formality. I’m not against using the 911 in foul weather but last Sunday after the rain I had to get supplies from Thame and even in my pick up the roads were bad with many a car becoming stranded presumably through sucking in water or suffering electrical maladies..... the 911 is not a submarine! Due to COVID and reduced bus service we both do the school run in opposite directions, the roads to Watlington being less susceptible to flooding so the GF is using the Bimmer while I use the truck...... unless I can find another chariot for the winter..... watch this space!
The brown forum offers up some tantalising roffles which are interesting, but private ads on Autotrader maybe my weapon of choice over the evenings. Tonight I have some lovely cod and pea fish cakes, rice with a terrine of winter vegetables I have made washed down with a Dr Loosen German Riesling, the GF is currently man down which means my share will increase 👍🏻

Holy thread update ....... I guess the theme here is out of sight, out of mind. I put the Porsche and Mini into storage earlier this year and have not had the opportunity to meet my friend who owns the unit due to poor timing. This morning at a heady minus 2 I trekked over to the unit to see one of his latest acquisitions, a rally prepared Skoda Felicia he/we will be using for Targa Rallies as and when we can, he is a serial collector of cars having a number of Rally Cars including one of the original 500 Subarus pro drive converted for homoligation plus 3 E36 Alpina BMW’s Saloon, Coupe and Cabby. Love the Skoda and looking forward to being co driver as and when, however the main purpose was to start the Porsche and move it around a little.... She is in fine fettle and the lines of any Porsche still attract my attention like Carol Vorderman on Countdown!!!! We digress, I wish you all a Prosperous 2021 and hope you stay healthy and well. Tonight I will be with Miss Battenberg and one of her daughters, I am currently working through a few bottles of peroni while preparing Bombay potatoes to be served with salmon and cod fish cakes, hollandaise sauce on a bed of fresh rocket and watercress for desert will be home made trifle (heavy on the Amaretto) followed by cheese and biscuits. As usual a Dr Loosens Riesling will feature, Argentinian Malbec, a 2013 Port and if I see midnight I have a bottle of Champagne given to me by a client (personally I hate it as it gives me a vicious hangover) Thanks for reading.....

Peek A Boo Had a call from my mate I share storage with this morning needing me to move the Porsche so he’d could get ‘one’ of his Rally cars out, I took the opportunity to stash my daily away until it is needed at Easter and bring out the Green Machine. Glad to see no oil leaks from the repairs done last year, however the D light was flashing (this is a tip tropic gearbox shared with AMG Mercedes) which a quick internet search showed a raft of expensive and panic inducing scenarios. I decided to drive it anyway, still goes into 5th and the tip buttons work fine so hopefully a code reset will sort it, I did notice however it was difficult to engage Drive at first so could be a stretched cable as some suggest....I’m sure a good lube will also help 🙈 I have missed this and hope it will be a simple fix......

Soooo.... the problematic holding of gears rectified itself after a few runs and some lube..... don’t they all?
However, one night I was watching the original Italian Job and at the scene where Charlie Crocker is on the milk float on the way home after ‘comforting’ the widow you hear the annoying rattling of crates...... it wasn’t until the following morning taking eldest to school and traversing multiple speed ramps and the ‘oh so smooth’ roads in South Oxfordshire I was reminded of that rattling noise.
Last year I had both front coffin arms replaced which cured all front end knocking, 996RS engine mounts followed which helped more but their was still something adrift in the rear causing me to drive like a drunk dodging every road imperfection. After another school run this morning I dropped the Car at the garage and asked them to sort it for me, after a diagnosis with big levers and brute force both rear coffin arms and control arms are the culprits so new ones ordered and being fitted as well as a four wheel alignment.
I’m still convinced a wheel bearing or two up front are on the way but we will see the difference on Friday when I collect it........ I have the joy of working west coast US hours this week hence the Friday collection!!
Thanks for Reading...
