Hello I have not posted about the trials and tribulations of machinery for a while as some have been moved to new custodians and others such as the ALPINA D3 Touring were just far to new for this Forum. I had a 911 (996)3.6 C2 of the 2004 vintage a fair few years ago, being an 04 it was the crossover to the new 997 and being originally ordered by a wing commander out in Cyprus had no stability control as I recall which lead to much spirited driving and brown trouser moments in even the modest of dewy mornings.... no wonder these things are called widow makers, something my ex wife probably now wishes had happened!! So last August/September after I sold my D3 and was left with a manky pickup which is used for all things gardening and pub runs plus my other BMW, I needed to fill the space on the Drive with something that would turn your head when you walked away from it like that MILF in the short skirt you always see on the school run or that twenty pound note blowing in the wind.... I narrowed the list to either a e46 Alpina Cabriolet, e46 M3 in DCR (Dog Cock Red), Phoenix Yellow or a Z4 Coupe 3.0si Auto with a budget of 8-9K wanting to do some spannering , titivation and general rejuvenation and more of a long term keeper. I looked at about a dozen vehicles and nothing 'talked to me' apart from a SE spec Z4 in Green but with comfort seats and a garish zebrano wood trim they were downsides, the one owner and low miles were great but it had been on the register at some point so again I walked away. Time to broaden the net looking at Porsche Cayman's and later style Boxster's but after having a 911 as Ferdinand intended I came back full circle to the 911 and thoughts of £££££ with IMS, RMS, Bore Score and any other expensive trait of a 911. I used the usual suspects of eBay, Autotrader, 911UK, and associated magazines and kept coming back to a 2001 C4 with mileage you would walk from but it has had one owner for 8 Years...... this is the Car I eventually purchased........ The last owner was the custodian for 8 Years, sadly he had passed away so it was a difficult sale/purchase but as the pictures show it was truly loved. I do not treat it as a show queen and use it as often as I can and it has had a few issues to date which i will detail over the next few days, the spec is as follows: - 911 Carrera 4 3.4 - Tiptronic - Rain Forest Green Metallic - Porsche MO30 Sports Suspension (Holy Grail) - EuroCup GT full HighFlow System - Upgraded later 996.2 three spoke steering wheel Once I started using it again on a more regular basis it started throwing EML error codes around O2 sensors... below proof it is not a show queen :-) More updates to come later, but now beer time!!

So.... back to the EML which was only throwing in the rain when sitting in traffic, the reader came back with code P0159 which relates to one of the two O2 sensors reading slow or in my terms knackered. I had the codes cleared and they have come back again, in the rain when stationary, my car also runs an aftermarket eurocup GT system and K&N element which according to ‘some’ forums could contribute to this also but I’m less inclined to believe that as the O2 sensor is after the CAT.
While the car was on the ramps we were trying to find the cause of a ‘knock’ from the front which I expected to be a tired bush, surprisingly and not shown in the history file is that at some point the car has been fitted with purple power flex bushes throughout so more investigation was to follow......
Plans as of January were:
- oil service, plugs filters etc - replace all four lambda sensors - IMS bearing - Replace suspension - upgrade alloys to Gold BBS Porsche spec
So, I had a huge shopping basket at design911 but, and here is the money saving but, I was struggling to trace in one of the many invoices from Porsche in Reading a invoice for £570 showing a part number many sites including Rockauto from the USA did not list so I called Porsche and asked the question..... in 2013 the PO purchased the retro fit MO30 Porsche sports suspension kit that drops the car 10mm, this includes front and rear:
- ARB’s - Shockers - Springs - Bushes
So in 2013 the suspension was replaced at 113K along with top mounts etc etc, to buy the MO30 retro fit kit today is £2800 plus top mounts at £240 a side...... ouch.....
On the good side the refresh is off the list and the focus is on locating the knock......
My design911 shopping bag now awaiting delivery for the service items when I will also check for traces of metal on the magnetic sump plug and drained oil before deciding on the IMS.
The History shows noted in the service book the IMS was replaced in 2009 but I have no documented proof so need to enquire with the Porsche dealer, either way it was 11 years ago, I have researched my engine number and it is a single row rather than a double row IMS. As a preventative measure I will have this done by a specialist this year despite comments on many forums saying tiptronics with a 3.4 are less stressed/vulnerable than other models......
Beer time....

Motion in the Ocean....... Did a fair bit of spirited driving over the weekend and something is not happy in the back, sure enough the engine mounts are fairly tired meaning movement in the bum which translates into you physically feeling the back end rock when you boot it from standing, or when I use the kick down for overtaking. This car will never go on a track so I do not want to go solid engine mounts but a few people on different forums and a friend of mine opted for a 993/996 RS engine mount kit... type911shop.co.uk/996-/-997-RS-Engine-Mount-Set-AftermarketQuite reasonable at £125 for the kit and looking forward to seeing the difference. I won’t have time do do the spannering myself this months due to travel commitments so will farm it out to my local mechanic.... Wine Time......

The postman always rings twice ........ as my door bell is broken... Small update, package arrived with service items, below is Pollen Filter, Iridium Power Denso Plugs (made from unobtainiam and rolled on the back of a unicorn judging by the price), hood struts and the Porsche Box contains the Oil Filter and housing. The car has a K&N filter so that will be cleaned and lightly re-oiled. Sexy Porsche Box with an Oil Filter according to the Germans.... I ordered up the Engine Mounts while nulling the pain with a delightful Malbec last night, they will be delivered tomorrow so the Car is booked in for a service with the above items and engine mounts on Thursday followed by wheel balancing and four wheel alignment, the chaps at AR Automotive fit it in around bread and butter jobs as they know I am not in a rush for it so expect it will be done while I'm traveling next week. I noticed while on the autobahn it becomes a little like piloting the millennium falcon going into hyperdrive with chewy next to me...... a little vibraty so hopefully balancing and alignment should sort it or highlight issues. And travel, most people and companies in lockdown but i get to work in Malaga for a week, then Paris!!! Coffee Time....

Pussy Galore...... perhaps one of my favourite names of a bond character which brings us neatly to Goldfinger, sales of the Aston Martin DB5 increased by fifty percent after the release of the movie. Parts arrived today from Type 911 being investigated by my Pussy... I have to go to HQ for meetings tomorrow, hoping to drop the Car Thursday.... Milk Shake Time....

Stunning colour!!! You should notice some improvements in handling the shifter after doing the engine mounts. I would suggest to have a stern look at the gearbox mount, too since these are usually quite worn after 20 years. There are polyflex inserts which slot into the existing old mounts. From what I've heart they work quite well. Happy spannering!

Progress An update from the guys at AR Automotive who are doing the spannering at the moment, all plugs replaced with a comment that the old ones were practically finger tight so glad that was done. Oil changed and no signs of metal on the magnetic sump plug or in the oil filter and drained oil, reported as fairly clean as i have a invoice for a service back in September 2019. The suspension knock has been found and the guilty party was the front left lower arm bush/bearing so those have been ordered up.. One engine mount fitted so far, below is a picture of the o/side one that had tons of radial movement in it, the n/side is seized solid and the concern from the lads is the nut will break off as it is seized in the captive nut attached to the monocoque..... love to help and advise but i will leave it in their capable hands!!!! knackered engine mount below... So hopefully get the car back tomorrow after they change the second engine mount, rebalance the wheels, four wheel alignment and brake fluid change.... Tonight is real ale night with a mate from Exeter way.....

Gewurztraminer
This evenings tipple of choice, German Car, German Wine and all travel with work now cancelled due to Coronavirus for the next 6 weeks.
The 911 is ready to collect but the lads have had a few struggles that has added to the preservation list:
-Brake fluid changed but the front pads will need doing before the MOT, the discs have a fair lip on them so it makes sense to do them both at the same time and maybe from a cosmetic perspective have the callipers refurbished also. -OSR rim needed a fair few weights on it, could be slightly buckled throwing it out. I’m in two minds about the wheels, I like the turbo twists and was thinking of a refurb rather than my other choice of replacing with gold BBS with a polished lip to complement the rainforest green. -Elephant in the room is near side engine mount, the bolts are seized and it would be a big job to rectify if the nut snaps in the captive bolt..... I want to get the IMS bearing replaced for peace of mind as mine is a single row not a double row so am going to talk to a couple of Porsche Specialists close to me to get a feel for price including changing the offending engine mount over...... I guess not travelling has is upsides!!!
I will do the hood struts, pollen filter and installing the battery conditioner plug this weekend and may even give the old girl a wash!
I’m looking forward to seeing the differences the work done will make, I popped by at the back end of today and the car was running a lot smoother with new plugs and oil change.......
Back to the wine now...... very chilled and went well with bangers, mash and home made English mustard (top tip use milk not water with your Coleman’s mustard powder)

Schnell, Schnell
I had yo pop to BMW in Tring this morning to drop of a mates son who Was collecting his first ‘proper car’ now he is doing more miles.... took the 911 and all the work has transformed the Car, most obvious being a firmer back end (oohhh missus) thanks to the engine mount(s) and the alignment... such a phenomenal piece of machinery.
You may recall in one post it was liking piloting the millennium falcon with the vibration, the A41 has shown this has now disappeared and it is very planted.
Only a small update as I’m having beans on toast for lunch with Worcester sauce and strong cheddar, washed down with a can of Iron Bru before tackling cleaning my truck!

Never underestimate how much worn engine and gearbox mounts can transform a car's handling. Glad you sound so happy with it.
I prefer brown sauce with beans on toast, that tang factor is unique. Are you drinking the new lower sugar full fat irn bru?

Wheels wheels wheels I shouldn’t but I am, like a Chinese restaurant menu.... salted spare ribs, seaweed, Hong Kong style chicken etc etc I love the turbo twists and like originality in a preservation rather than banging on air ride and a pair of fire fox split rims with nitrogen air and some make of semi road legal slick that will see me with more bush action than I had 20 years ago....... for those under 40 reading this a bush is not just a English rock band or something that your parents have in the garden maybe with pampas grass 🤡 I digress, so to keep in the Porsche parts bin I’m thinking of either: Or something like this: Love to hear your thoughts...... this post has been brought to you following fish fingers in ciabatta with chunky chips, tartare sauce, mushy peas with vinegar and mint sauce and washed down with a Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc which the tasting notes say smells like cats pee on a gooseberry bush....... where does one meet a person who sniffs cats whizz on various flora and fauna for a living?.....
