I have often thoght that a SD1 with a Jag XJ-S 3.6 24v + manual gearbox would be a cracking combo. Failing that the 175hp 24v V6 out of my Rover 827 would be a winner too but i don't know how to install it in a RWD application. Apparently it has been done in a few Cobra kit cars but I dunno what gearbox would be used - does anyone know?

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

Heavy isn't good, though. The original buick-derived unit was actaully pretty light. Why not stick with what ought to live in there, just pepped up a bit a lot! I'm thinking this! 4.6 monster!!

Ignoring the fact that this lad has ruined a very nice local Mk1 SD1 V8 manual for a fugging poxy 'MGB project' what engine would you put in it if it was yours? I know what you mean - if it was a dog, then fair enough, but it looks to have been a decent car. Probobly easest to keep it as a Rover V8 (that 4.6 looks good!), but I wonder if a Jag V12 would fit? ;D I quite like the SD1 - helped partly by the last registered SD1 Vitesse Twin Plenum is stored in the same warehouse as my Sprite, so I see one quite often! The car in question used to live in the owner's front garden (awaiting restoration) until he had too many people knocking on his door wanting to buy it. It didn't take too much imagination to work out that sooner or later it would be stolen if it hadn't been moved.....

Get real everybody!
Its gotta be fairly cheap and DIY-able. And, being a true motor-bigot, I don't like pushrods. hence the Jag/Honda suggestions.
Its not going to be dear that Rover, and i have a friend with a shed i could store it in, in Northumberland.
just so much temptation everywhere!!!

I've always liked the idea of an 827 V6 transplant. I was going to suggest somthing like a V8 from a Rover 75 before I realised how seriously you were considering the project! ;D

How about buying an MGB with a V8 conversion and puting the engine in the rover and then selling the MGB shell on ;D ;D just to even things up a little! seriously though I'd like to see a modern V6/V8 engined SD1 but I'm with you about converting the 600/800 engine to RWD , how about a modern BMW engine, rear wheel drive already, loads about so should be cheep and it would be kind of ironic with the whole BMW/Rover deal ;D ;D

I know it's still close to the Rover theme, but TVR's V8s are based around the Rover V8, but seriously juiced up, how about one of those if you could find one, failing that the American V8 route sounds cost efficient and they are great for massive power outputs, but can you find a manual gearbox that could handle tuned American V8 torque figures and doesn't cost the world? Sounds a bit of a challenge to me.
