It does not mix with the DOT4 conventional brake fluid. I once brought my MGB v8 to the MOT and had not put the warning shield on the brake fluid reservoir like Chris did. They filled it up a bit and therefore i know that these fluids do not mix as the conventional brake fluid was on top of the silikon one as a kind of layer. Now all the cars have the warning shield [/div] I always exchanged all rubber parts when i swapped over to silikon but overhauled the entire brake system at the same time when changing to silikon
Peter
[/quote] They don't have to mix to be compatible just not react with each other and still work as a brake fluid. As you say the best option is to change all the seals and put the new fluid in a dry system, but a few pockets of dot 4 will not affect the function either, as dot 4 floats on top of the silicone I imagine it will find its way to the reservoir and bleed nipples as well so having a few goes over time should help.

My parts turned up from the Jowett Car Club's excellent spares scheme 'Jowett Car Parts' - I even got a gold box Dare I ask what they reline the brake shoes with?

I don't know but has you are the second one to ask I will find out - they are done by a professional brake relining service on behalf of the club but I will make some enquiries on what the lining material is tomorrow and get back to you

So what's left to do on the ever dwindling list Door seals - no easy fix either - these are a glue on job - you need the correct adhesive - I use a heat resistant / high temperature trim adhesive (in other words it does not let go of what its holding in place when the sun comes out and makes the car hot) Undertaken in sections at a time - you need to be neat with the adhesive which is brushed on - apply too little and the seal wont stick - apply too much and you have adhesive everywhere that you don't need it That's the doors done - BUT There is the boot to do too I went to start the car but could not get it play ball - did some fault finding - the chokes were not engaging fully so I altered / adjusted the linkage - tried again but by the battery lacked enough power to turn the engine over at a reasonable speed so I placed it on charge overnight - The following morning - choke fully out pressed the starter and it started immediately Turned off and raised the rear end so that wheels were out of contact with the floor - restarted the engine then engaged / disengaged the clutch and went through each gear to ensure that the column gearshift was correctly configured and that each gear selected correctly (which it did) Hence a massive milestone was achieved When it was driven outside under its own power Its scruffy and still needs a good clean & final polish Once I have completed the final handful of jobs that are still required More progress tomorrow

Even 'scruffy' it looks amazing and great to see it moving under its own power.

Looks superb, (as it was always going to), bet it must feel good to get it outside again too.

Looks great, how’s the engine so far, as you’ve found quite a few issues so far with it? Hopefully they tightened all the nuts when they put it together.

So far so good lets just hope that they put it together correctly internally but fell asleep on the final assembly items - I don't want to sound overly dismissive but its not really my problem - its the clients or whoever his engine builder is - however I can do without any further headaches on this one so lets hope that I have found all the niggles on his behalf

Those Beetle rear lights look to be a good addition. The aesthetic might be improved a little by using US spec all red lenses, and green indicator bulbs, so they look amber when they’re working, and red when they’re not.

I agree, but I think they look a little too low. Unfortunately there's not much room for adjustment!

And how do you prepare the bodywork and the rubber? Do you degrease or the like? In the past I used contact glue from the DIY store like Pattex which was sometimes disappointing.

Gotta say I really don't think the VW lights suit it. I know the originals are difficult (impossible?) to get but if it were mine I'd try to find something more in keeping with the rest of the car.
PS, I also wondered about the strange brake linings.

Mark I don't like the VW lights either the originals are a Lucas fitment and are available as a reproduction lens / lamp unit They were also fitted to the Jowett Jupiter along with a few coach built Bentley's / Alvis / Daimlers - the metal housing is unique to the Javelin but there are plenty around - I have kept mine original then added a small reflector and indicators that are under the rear bumper - still attempting to find out what the brake lining material is

MGA 1600 MK1 lights could be an option looking at the wing angle, although probably not a huge supply of plinths the lights are common or garden Lucas. Sean

no idea on cost or availability but the smaller earlier beetle rear units would suit it better the the ones on it. we are really nit picking here though aren't we?

Chris, forgive my ignorance, but why is Bob’s rear number plate fitted to the bumper yet yours is fitted to the boot lid? Earlier / later model I presume?
