Nice! I'd always liked the idea of a 2.4 JTD transaxle car, but something would need to be done with the transaxle itself as I expect it would simply disintegrate behind diesel torque. Front gearbox would be an option, but I've seen pics of someone halfway through putting a BMW gearbox in a custom frame at the back that piqued my interest. Will be interested to see how this goes

Corvettes run a t56 ahead of the diff, that could take the torque and are geared to 300mph in top

In the days my parents drove an Alfa 90 2.4 Turbo Diesel (VM engine) which was also used to pull some bigger trailers so the diesel pump was slightly "tuned". It smoked a bit under heavy load but was fast and very strong. I know we where once driving uphill with a 1600Kg or a bit more trailer behind it and it was happily running at 2000rpm and something of 110Kmh as we heard a loud bang a a lot of knocking and no power to the wheels. Driveshaft sheared off just before the clutch on the transaxle side. But as dad had also contacts in heavy machinery world and he loved his Alfa 90 a beefier driveshaft was built and the Alfa 90 drove on until something like 450.000km. on the clock when she was really dead and was replaced by an Alfa 164.. The transaxle never gave a problem. Thom

Interesting. Gone back and read up again, and it turns out they're a little more robust than I thought once you sort some known issues. This is a useful thread, as is this one which has this quote: Note this is under racing conditions with a 3.7 24v . The engine misalignment and bracing of the engine fixed my prop issues combined with coupling cage . The extra bracing on the clutch housing fixed the clutch issues with the standard clutch flywheel . The correct gearbox oil, diff cooler , outboards brakes , side exhausts AND smoother driving solved the gearbox issues on the SMALLER 10/41and10/43 pinions . HOWEVER the the guys who went a step further used the CROWN / pinion from the 75 3.0 as its much bigger than the previous two pinions mentioned combined with stiffener plates around the bearings on main shaft in gearbox could thrash that box all day long EXCEPT on the big twin turbo motors as these stripped the gears . But now we talking 450hp on wheels and not even straight cut gears . So I would wait and see what broke first . Oh also I used the BMW centre coupling which is exact pcd and 10x stronger than the Alfa one but its 5mm wider.

The transaxle will not be used..
2.4td transaxle would be hard to find, the gearing is not long enough and it would most likely grenade itself.😅
They can be made to handle a decent amount of power but that's expensive. It would also take a special propshaft and clutch as there is not really anything available for it that's strong enough.
My current 20v jtd in the giulia has about 500nm and that's with a very conservative tune. With the planned turbo and fueling mods i'm expecting the Giulietta to get around 300-350bhp with about 650-700nm😎
I'll take the easy way and use a front mounted gearbox, most likely bmw. Diff also from a bmw and if i'm a bit lucky i can use a bmw prop as well.😊

I've seen a BMW gearbox mated to a BMW diff once in the back of a E10 to make a transaxle.

I've seen similar with a Volvo 360 transaxle/separate diff thingy in a GTV6 in this thread. There's a full thread in Finnish I think here. I expect that using a 360-style 'diff bolted to the output shaft of the gearbox' arrangement you could mix and match a different gearbox/diff combo and shove it in the rear (provided the clutch is sorted one way or another). Nowt wrong with a front gearbox mind, and they're much easier to sort for the torque you're looking at.

This is supposed to be a quick project 😅 i'm pretty sure i could fabricate something like that cradlemounted gearbox and diff but it would take more time, effort and money to do then simply using the box upfront.😉
Maybe in some future project but not this one.😉

Looks better than any Giulietta I've seen for sale in the UK!
Tell a lie, there was a stunning 3.0l swapped one for about £20k a year or two ago, but that's it.

I can imagine the English climate not having a very positive effect on these cars as they tend to be a bit sensitive for rust😅😉
The floors on this one are bad, as is the bulkhead and the part under the windscreen is just about disappeared.. previous owner tried to use bondo to keep it together 🤔
These cars were not very well liked and not many are left now. They're not very expensive and restoration is financially not a very good idea.

Always had a soft spot for these giuliettas. My dad had quite an eclectic taste in cars and these were always on his radar. I remember having a sage green coloured burago model of one when I was a kid.
A mate of mine had one. It was quite a thing being a 2.0rs model but it was a turbo. Two tone Rosso over silver, with sports seats in a heavy tweed fabric, think it was either a C or D plate (86 model) and remember it having plates and window sticker from Bell & Colvil in East Horsley. I’ve tried to find details about them online but it only comes up with the turbodelta which this wasn’t one of. I did however come across an old copy of motorsport magazine online a while ago that had a Bell & Colvil advert on one of the pages listing their used cars and I believe it was that car listed in the advert. Unfortunately my mate who was in his early 50’s died during lockdown so I can’t find any other details out about it.

Bell&colvill offered aftermarket turbo conversions for some Alfa models, Giulietta would probably also be on that list. They made good reliable power from what i've read.
The Turbodelta is a rare beast with some interesting mechanical engineering. Fast as well for that era.

Yeh I’ve just been looking and found a page on their website that said they did turbo conversions on Alfas. It looked pretty factory so must have been one of their conversions.

They(turbodelta) indeed where very special and expensive to produce and buy with a lot of engineering by Alfa Avio (the Aircraft part of Alfa) and a lot of expensive magnesium and electron parts.I think they wanted t use it for some kind of racing but never pushed it forward (like so often with Alfa at that time). It seemed like i had some play in the front suspension so i had a look. In the upper wishbones there were 2 rubbers that were never replaced. I remember that they were on backorder at the moment i ordered all balljoints and bushes for the front end. These were shot but obviously i had no replacement for them. Some nylon and tube solved that. And for once everything went together smoothly.😊

And after another hard day work it stands on it's own.. Properly boxed up where the rear axle got reattached to the floorpan. Hope to work at it some more but that depends if my mate needs the room/lift.. then i can fill in the holes between floorplate and rear axle and start drilling out some spot welded for parts i won't be using. After that i would put it on it's side and scratch the underseal off.
