After thinking about getting my topic moved from the showroom to the project section i realized i already have a project topic. There had been no updates here since i used my showroom topic which can be found here: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/214297/1974-alfa-romeo-giulia-engineI'm going to use this topic to update on my Giulia. And i might sneek some pictures in from projects that i'm helping on.

The car is currently being used daily. Last week we had some cold weather. One annoying thing is that this car stays cold a long time. The common rail diesel engine is very efficient and if it's not under load it barely creates heat to warm the coolant. Due to space restraints under the dash i had to build my own heaterbox. It doesn't have a valve to keep the outside air out. So if you start driving the cold air is pushed through the heater matrix and effectively cooling the engine...🙁 The car weighs only about 1070kg and had a long final ratio so it makes nog a lot of revs. If you're driving at 80km/h(50mph) it's at 1400rpm and you can easily drive 40-50km(25-30m) without it opening the thermostat if the heater is on and it's cold outside. It might be an idea to close the fresh air inlet up a bit so the air doesn't het pushed in the car as much.will see if that helps.

Recently painted the area behind the grille black again, looks better then the grey shining through. The Land Rover is my brothers. Very few original Land Rover parts left.😅 LandCruiser axles with air lockers, parabolic springs, 3.4td Toyota engine with special rockcrawler transferbox and many other modifications. Very good offroad as it has massive axle travel(1m/3ft if i remember it well).

Man I love this car On the cold heater front, I know the E46 330d I've broken had a block heater plumbed into the coolant system. It's a heating element block thing bolted to the side of the engine bay. Could pinch one of those and plumb it in-line with the heater flow. I think the BMW setup also uses it to warm the block while cruising to make it more efficient too.

On the Mini scamp project thread there is a bit about a homemade mini heater. That could help Thanks for that. I've already made a heater box and that works quite well. The main problem is that there is a lot of air flowing through it when driving. The air is forced in and is effectively cooling the engine.

There is a VW golf mk1 heater matrix in there with a fan from some AliExpress oilcooler setup. I use a golf resistor to get different speeds on the fan. Delivery of air is regulated with the vents from an alfa 156. There is always air being directed to the windshield.for max defrost you close the 4 lower vents.

Fabulous car, i love weird engine swaps and it really works since its an Alfa engine.
that heater box looks alot like the one Bad Obsession Motorsport made for Project Binky.
Bookmarked.

love the heater, I'm thinking of building something similar for my Lotus elan, the standard heater is next to useless.

love the heater, I'm thinking of building something similar for my Lotus elan, the standard heater is next to useless. This was an easy solution for the little space i have. There are no valves to distribute the air. These alfa 156 dashvents are really easy to use. They deal off well when closed and can be turned to blow the air where you want it. Also it uses the very cheap golf mk1 heater matrix and control valve. These were less then 20 euro together new.

I'm also a big fan of modified cars and engineswaps are my favourite. Strange swaps are the best and i really don't care if they're from a different brand. The one on project Binky looks way better then mine, as does most of their work 😅

Here is another example from a project i'm helping on. Will make a real Nice sleeper when it's done. Yes, that's an Audi RS5 v8 engine in a Passat Syncro wagon... 450bhp with a manual gearbox in an awd car should be nice enough to surprise a few people. simply delicious.

Had a funny moment last week. As i was driving on a dyke enjoying the weather there was a guy on a motorcycle behind me. I decided to pull over to let him pass me as i was constantly braking for people walking and on bikes. When i stopped he got off and came over to me. He told me his father has a totally original Giulia but he liked the look of mine more. Then he told me the engine needs work as it puts out smoke everytime i overtake someone. He was quite surprised when i told him it's a diesel..😂😂

Very nicely done your Alfa! Did you go to the RDW for the engine swap and is the Passat going to the RDW? I fitted a rover V8 to an MGB roadster which is more common then your engine change and had to go to the RDW which was not much of a problem in the end but it was 20 years ago. Peter

Superb build. How did the wiring go on the Audi swap. I want to use an FSi V6, but i'm put off by the complexity.
