"They'll be a pig to mask up" What is this masking you speak of? Bit of cardboard (gasket packaging is great for this) held against the top face while you spray to stop the paint going into valve area, then a quick wipe over of the bits you don't want paint on with thinners on a rag and you'll be golden. Always makes me laugh watching people spending hours masking engines, it's not needed at all. I was just concerned about it going anywhere it shouldn't.. don't want it in the ports or on the cam bearing faces (there's no seperate bearing they run in the head) etc etc. Il try your technique when it finally time to paint em. And if it goes wrong I can pass the buck haha Cheers

Had a similar problem when doing a motorbike head and made an extension to fit spring compressor out of a bit of steel conduit. Cost curse word all and made life much easier! That's not a bad idea. May give summat a try like that if I've got some tube at work. Cheers

Jamesd and blackpop I tried the grease the problem is everything seems to have gone magnetic from me removing them with a magnet ... And no amount grease or fancy assembly lube seems to over power the magnetism... Doesn't help the spring tool I have doesn't really fit (bottoms out on the head before the spring is compressed). The big set I have for work doesn't go small enough. Il plod on Cheers doin a brill job there mate, bit late but i have a spring compressor with changeable ends if it makes it easier, welcome to borrow if needed Cheers mate. Il see how I get on today (assuming I'm not doing actual work haha) and drop you a message if I'm stuck

I find a blob of grease on a small screwdriver will stick the back of the collets to the screwdriver, then its a lot easier to pop them in the gaps as your fingers are no-where near them. Just enough grease on the screwdriver to hold the collet, and a big blob on the valve stem to pull the collet off the driver. Then you pinch both collets together with some tweezers, and gently release the valve spring compressor. Speaking of which, THIS looks like a piece of junk, but works really well on modern engines. Takes me about 30 minutes to refit all the valves and seals on a K-series using one. For that cost I may order one regardless just to have in my box "just incase" Cheers

There not a bad idea.. luckily I've never had a problem with "modern" style seals. I've been putting plenty of lube on the valve before I slip it in (oooh errr) so fingers crossed il be ok Cheers

Groundhog Day.... No wait we did that didn't we ๐๐ today was looking like more Of the same as yesterday... I'm not going to lie I was kinda hoping to get a breakdown at work so I didn't have to faff again... But I didn't so faffing commenced Now I'm not sure if it was the beer I drank last night, the fresh eyes, or the wind changed... But for whatever reason the heads sailed back together. I'm a firm believer sometimes it's best to walk away when summat is being a pain in (not always convenient but with this it literally doesn't matter).. So much so that in less than an hour n half the other 24 valves were back in the respective holes! Happy days... So you'd think. Except. This is me and nowt is ever straight forward. Now I didn't mention but under each valve spring between the spring and the head is a little "steel shim". The only logic I can think is it's to stop the spring eating the ally head. Not a problem I'd been careful to make sure each spring had a shim under it. Right until the point the last spring had gone in and sat staring from the tray of bits was this.. Absolutely magnificent ๐ญ๐ญ now you can't see with the spring in which has one missing. There less than a mm thick and perfect diameter to the spring so without removing the spring you don't know which has one missing. So valves back out it is Luckily the 3rd one I removed didn't have a shim under so I'd found the missing one. Thinking about it my boss had just come to see what I was up to. So il blame him haha. Anyways after about 3 days work on n off. Were here. Looking pretty much exactly same as we did before ๐ Wanted to get a coat of paint on them while I was on a roll but couldn't bring myself to do it how stealthystylez said with a lump of card. Think my inner tart came out a bit. Still using a bit of lateral thinking (old gaskets for masking, cam covers to mask the top, and some scrunched up kitchen roll down the holes) it was "masked".. Wafted some paint round them. They now look a million percent better and took no time to do (the cam covers are being stripped and repainted a different colour altogether) While I'd got the spray booth out (pallet on a forklift) figured I'd get the cleaned up waterbridges painted too. Bish bash bosh. Job done. At this rate it will be too nice to get mucky (let's not be ridiculous)haha With that called it a day. Well not quite not until I'd spoke to the place I'd ordered the arp headstuds from. They were ordered on 20th October and paid for same day. Was told two weeks. Left em while last Friday and with no news phoned and was told "can only be a few days now.. so left them til today. Still no studs so gave them another call. This is where it went wrong.. they said there's "no supply from arp at minute and no ETA".. bit more back and forth and apperently arp aren't manufacturing any until JANUARY NEXT YEAR!! This is obviously far from ideal. Bit more back and forth and they agreed to a refund. Didn't solve my issue but least I'd have cash back for some from elsewhere. If I can find some. There appears to be zero stock of them in UK. States are quoting January delivery and Australia is 3 weeks and a lump more money. Perfect ๐ญ Made a few more calls sent a few messages and luckily a lad I know involved in BDC has a spare set on the shelf he's willing to sell me! Paid him straight away and hopefully il have them Monday! Not cheap things to build v8s are they haha. Tomorrow I'm on my own at work so could go either way. May be dead with nowt to do but my own stuff. Or manic and me trying to be in 4 places at once. So wel see. Anyways. More soon hopefully Cheers

Great progress again.
From memory the dipstick tube to block 'o' ring tends to leak, might be worth inspecting it as I think it's difficult to access when the engine in the car. Have a look anyway as that's what I recall.

Yeah wasn't ideal. I've no problem with suppliers not holding all the stock, especially spurious bits like for this.. but to take payment the second I order them (not when they have the stock) and then not update me or let me know straight away there's a problem is taking the Micheal a bit.. And cheers, if I get stuck il be sure to let you know. Hopefully my mate comes good and I've got some on way. But il definitely bare it in mind should owt else go wrong

That's a way off being fitted tbf since it has to be threaded through the manifold once that's on. But will definitely being replaced (don't want oil on my shiny paint haha)

As I said yesterday, today could have gone one of two ways. Either me pulled out with it trying to be in 3 places at once. Or absolutely dead and left to my own devices.. as it happened it was the latter made even worse by 2 of the 3 deliveries I was expecting at work not turning up! Not great for work (just means il be even busier Monday) but good for car time.. Unfortunately without my head studs I was a bit stuck on actually building owt back up but not wanting to waste the time set about cleaning up and painting owt I could. Not the worlds most exciting update. But progress all the same. Started with the oil cooler and filter housing. Once I'd cleaned it up figured best way to keep the paint out of where it shouldn't be was leave the old oil filter on.. if it will keep oil pressure in should keep aerosol paint out haha Then the link pipe that feeds from the back of the water pump to the heater matrix. Paint was flakey and mingin on this and I'd had to warm it up to get it out of the old pump. Once I'd wire brusehd and scotchbrited it up I realised it's actually stainless. Thought about leaving it in scuffed up stainless but figured It would look a mess when it went dull.. so more etch primer gloss black and laquer Was running out of stuff to paint at this point. Can we tell I'm getting desperate haha Once id painted bottom pulley (I know I know) and the engine mounts figured I'd make a start on the cam covers. Like I say there going a different colour so wanted to get the layers of black of them. Set the steam cleaner going, gave em a proper wash and dry then doused em in paint stripper and set em to one side for a couple hour.. Whilst I'd got the steamer out dug the rad out and gave it the most thorough clean inside it's ever had. Even chucked a couple dishwasher tablets in for good measure to be sure ๐คฃ๐คฃ once it was done left the hose flowing through for half an hour and the water is spotless not a trace of k seal or otherwise!! Back to the cam covers... Not sure what I painted these in. But it's very resistant to the stripper. When I used it on them rx8 wheels an age back it practically fell off. Not this time looks like I'm doing it the manual way next week haha Also had a suprise visitor pop in wanting to change the oil on his new takeaway delivery vehicle ๐๐ even tho it's a 2001 it's still a bit different and told him he ought to do a build thread for it (it's the lad with the ls400 we manual swapped). He's "not messing with this one it's a cheap daily"... But we all know how that will end ๐๐ Anyways other than a few more odds and sods I painted that's about it for today.. Hopefully be able to do some putting together next week.. Cheers

I love the shincup but I am new to that size. To me the shincup is the king of the pot snack.
What we had has only grown deeper and more special. X.

Well well well... What's this. An update on a Saturday. Things must be getting serious ๐ but let's not get carried away haha. Nothings changed from the olden days of this thread. Well my kids are older I'm grumpier and the cars more broken than ever. But Mrs works Friday nights then sleeps til Saturday afternoon. And my job is to keep the kids as quiet as possible and entertain them til she's up.. As you can imagine I'm having to go further and further to find new parks, nature reserves, walks, random things to do. And today's plan was poolsbrook park just down the road from stavely... What's this got to do with car I hear you cry? Well. The alloy wheel guy who did my wheels several pages back is based at stavely. I've known him a good few years and was chatting last night and asked about him just acid dipping the cam covers to get rid of the paint (I really don't want blast media behind any baffles). I'm not sure if the paint stripper I had has lost its potency or the million degree engine has baked the paint on. But even with the wire brush it wasn't keen on coming off! Pleasantly surprised said he'd bath em me for a drink. So first thing this morning shot to work with the kids in tow (forklifts are like play centres for kids aren't they.... Don't worry it was off๐คฃ) whipped the seals out and set off to drop em off. Dropped em in and took kids to poolsbrook for an hour. Got back and this is how they now look. Excuse the terrible pics I literally chucked em back In van to carry on my day! But there now lovely clean bare ally ready for me to slap my new top coat on... Can we guess what colour ๐คฃ๐คฃ Anyways. That's saved about 5 hours with the wire wheel and sand paper. So it was a drink worth buying! Actual work next week hopefully. Cheers

Don't get me wrong when there being nightmares and I'm marching em out of a shop or pulling my hair out cus they will not listen I wonder why. But like today when they've been like my little sidekicks and where hiding from geese at nature reserve and laughing our heads off it all makes sense! Cheers!

Make sure you properly blast out inside the baffles with the pressure washer. The acid will have loosened all the built up curse word in there and you sometimes end up with a pile of sludge at one end.
As for Shin Cups they're about 4th best noodle snack. Find a local Chinese supermarket they usually do a huge selection and they're mainly the big size pots

Yeah I was going to run the steamer through them set to maximum attack just to make sure any curse word that was left behind the baffles was out. I actually want to remove the breather outlet on the driver's side and rotate it 180 degrees so oil catch can can go on bulkhead so il do that same time.. My boss actually buys em from the Chinese supermarket too (there not a quid in there but they do have more choice)... Me being tight and poor means il have to stick to cheap shop haha
