Didn't know you were a Volkswagen owner teasing pictures of you new wheels and not posting them up. Thats something them boys would do, get a picture stuck up! or is the big reveal tonight when I bring those wheels nuts over... I haven't got them yet you tart. Tomorrow haha. Didn't want to start flashing em round til I had them... However it would appear the guy below is smarter than me haha (that's not hard)

Through my excellent powers of deduction, I reckon he has a set of OZ Ultraleggera alloys for it Shhhhhhh hahahahaha. (not quite but close lol)

Managed another couple hour tonight. My mate also came up to lend a hand.. he actually came to buy the ls400 4 pots off me I aquired a few pages back.. he's been nagging me about them for a while since he knows what I paid for them and will bolt straight onto his early ls400.. I haven't got the spare money to fit them at the minute, plus I've found an even BIGGER set I can fit (literally only just fit behind 18s bigger) so using man maths it makes them a good investment right Anyways. Back to the washer debacle. Figured out what was going off other night. Finished the wiring first job, plumbed in filled the bottle, pump runs... No squirtin...(quiet in the back) what in the name of God is wrong now it's the simplest of simple things to sort surely.. Tried blowing through the pipe. Blocked solid. Followed the pipe splitting it at various joints. Turns out the jets are blocked solid. Like granite!!. Tried to clean them out with a little pick, no good. Had to remove them. Eventually after lots of tugging pulling and trying to not damage paint or jets they were out. So I've left them soaking in boiling water and fairy with a dishwasher tablet for good measure in the hope it softens whatever is in there. With me happy that was working barring jets decided to tackle a job I hate. Bonnet pins... I'm not overly precious about the paint on the bonnet, it's dinted and marked and what not. But I really don't want to buy a new bonnet when I ruin it. So armed with a second pair of hands a tape measure and a paint pen we set off.. guess that means we're committed now Didn't take many more pics of the process. I've had to hack the re-enforcing bits away behind them (all whilst trying to make as little noise as humanly possible) and work as quick as possible before it got too late... Got them in and "fitted" the holes need opening slightly in the bonnet just to allow a little bit of wiggle room so they will fit in flush. But there in and fit. Quite nicely too... My new expansion tank should be here Monday, I've nicked one off a truck just to copy it so I can make a mount over the weekend and fetched the welder home. All being well I'm into the final stretch now. Maybe.. possibly... Who am I kidding Cheers

I painted the cooler and the solid pipes black to make them disappear, but haven't had chance to get any joiners yet in black. Since my deadline just moved forward there not my priority anymore haha

So Saturday morning rolled round kids up and ready Mrs home from nights and back in bed. Qué my time to leave the house so she can get some sleep (why don't toddlers have a volume button)... Luckily I had a little job to do. Time to fetch the new wheels... The worst kept secret in car built thread history.. Now I needed something to fill the wide boy btcc kit. Something preferably not made of finest Cheap. And something with proper sized tyres on, with a proper offset too.. oh and preferably something that didn't weigh 98364kg.. I always like the thin spoked look, like what the touring car of the era would run, and when a set of staggered Oz superleggera came up in proper sizes with proper tyres. Well it was a sign. there one of a the lighter wide lad wheels available. From a real known manufacturer, and there doesn't seem to be a bad word spoken about them They need a refurb. The faces are pretty tidy but the backs have never been cleaned I don't think but they are presentable enough to go on as is.. (once there black of course).. Managed to rush round supermarket this afternoon and with half hour spare had to do a test fit (yes I'm a child).. Yes... There wide haha. No problem... Fronts may need a little spacer but until I fit the wide wings I won't actually know for sure.. oh and it needs beating with the lowering stick haha Anyways. That's all for now. Back to adulting Cheers

Once it’s mapped you might need to double up on the masking tape though Funny you should say that.. my 9 year old niece was there whilst I was fitting them. And in a proper matter of fact sort of 9 year old way told me "well youl have to paint the tape cus that looks stupid" hahah Don't worry, once it's done il use.double sided tape. See whose laughing then 😂

So Sunday. The day of rest. Days of rest aren't a thing in this house. Kids up at crack of dawn and a list of adultin as long as my arm. Best crack on then.. had convinced the Mrs that me working on the car Sunday night was a good idea but needed to turn it round. So the nose was nearer the drive (more on that later makes welding easier)... So with kids eating dinner I whipped the supersilencer 80000 out of the exhaust and fired it up... Agghhhhhh that's better (if by better you mean sounds like a Lancaster bomber ) Reversed it down the drive to turn it round on the "private" road.. no front end on car still. And As I'm obviously a child and this was first time it had moved since the TeamViewer session setting everything up. The only thing to do was slip the clutch slightly load it up and see if it boosted.... Holy mother of god and the desiples!!! The exhaust note is muted compared to the induction noise. The induction noise disappears under the turbo noise, That sounds not to dissimilar to a fighter jet on take off. What have I done (this is all still at about 2mph haha) My moment of ecstasy was quickly replaced with sheer terror... as I attempted my 800 point turn on the road it became very difficult to get in first... Then impossible to get reverse. Then any gear became a no go... Panicking a bit, blocking the road and not thinking straight I managed to switch it off, put it in reverse and limp it back up drive albeit with the clutch dragging all way. Once it was back in its spot on the drive and I'd calmed down a bit with all sorts of thoughts going through my head (what have I done wrong, has that just killed the clutch, what's broken now, can I fix it before the 1st) I pumped the peddle half a dozen times and tried it.. aggghh that's better.. I'd obviously got air in the system and it had just reared it head.. convinced the Mrs to lend a hand bleed it Sunday night and although I'm not sure she was a brilliant assistant (I heard her let go of the pedal while I was under it just as it sucked a load of air back in).. the first time I cracked the nipple off I definitely got air out of it. Thank god thats all it was. So with that done I could get on with the next job. Mounting an expansion bottle. I'd ordered one from one of our suppliers but it didn't come with a bracket. So set to with the sparkly stick and some flat plate Almost looks like it was made to be there.. got that all plumbed in, so that's the cooling system "finished" in a way... Now the engine had been sat empty for 18months. And the rad had plenty of crud in it.. grabbed a bottle of this radiator flush stuff from work Monday. No idea if it works or not for a fiver worth a try. Dumped it in and ran it up to temperature for 10/15 minutes. Keeping an eye on the temperature and monitoring externally with my temp gun (the ally housings tend to under read by about 5/6 degrees) watched the temp climb until it reached about 86 on the gun. And just like magic the fan fired up!! Not only is my wiring correct I've connected it up right way so it pulls the air through rather than trying to push Dropped the coolant with it running and ran the hose through til it ran clear, so I'd call that done. Will refill it once I've got some hoses for the turbo water feed. The bottom radiotor hose runs very close to the turbo as you may have noticed. I'm going to order a blanket when I have some spare pennies and find one the right size. But for now I've wrapped the hose in some of that aluminium/fibreglass heat proof tape and p clipped it out the way. I'm not sure how much it helps, but a bit of summat is better than loads of nowt surely? Now back onto the washer debacle. Ive replaced the awful clear pipe the pump comes with with some nice 3mm silicone (the stuff it came with didn't seal on the pump).. I've soaked the washers for 3 days in everything from vinegar to dishwasher tablets in boiling water. And then finally blown them out at 90000psi with the airline. Finally after way longer than I'd like to admit this happened... Was nearly as memorable as the first start Anyways I think that's all for now. I've got some more bits on the way, need to figure the water pipe fittings out for the turbo (the hole measures about 17mm so I've no idea what that is) and some more general finishing off.. I don't want to say it, but I think I may get there.. Cheers

Sooooo the internet. A magical invention where in a few clicks you can find out the president of outer Mongolia, or who had most number ones in 1970's, or videos of ladies and gents doing the baby making dance (these aren't safe for work, trust me ) there's also great sources of information just like this forum.. there is also a LOT of wrong information. And for some reason it would appear every internet expert on anything related to this build is wrong One thing I've been putting off is the water feed and return lines for the turbo.. when I got the braided oil feed line made up the guy at Carlton hydraulics measured up the outlets so we knew what fittings I'd need. And being organised I wrote it on the box the turbo was in. Being really organised I threw the box away once I'd fitted the turbo.. FFS. Now according to the internet, a hx50 has a m16x1.5 thread in the water outlet, and a hx55 has a m18x1.5 thread.. using my shonky digital callipers the hole measures at roughly 17mm (access isn't great). So figured it could be either.. no problem, called in saw the guy I normally see and he let me borrow a selection of fittings to try (we have an account at work and spend a fair lump with em, I'm not sure loaning fittings is usual practice 😂).. Tried all the metric ones he gave me. No good. M16 way too small, M18 sort of screws in and wobbles about in the hole.. tried a few others with no success. Had a bit of a brainwave and figured 18mm is nearly 3/4.. tried a 3/4 jic fitting out of my van. It's only bloody right size (wrong face obviously). Armed with my new information I've been and returned all the wrong fittings today and got the stuff to do it right. Other problem is I need to go from the 3/4 hole down to 8mm id hose. So we ended up having to chop one side of a male to male adaptor off, tap the centre to accept a banjo bolt and do it that way.. anyways enough random rants and spiel. Had to turn these bits.. into a water feed and return All done relatively pain free. With those on that was the cooling system "finished".. time to refill with fresh coolant. Due to the rad being lower than the engine, and uz's been partial to the odd air lock it took an age. Started by filling the rad till it was level with the rad cap. Refitted the rad cap and part filled the expansion tank. Then removed a hose I've kept spare (but blanked off) to fill from the very top of the engine with a tiny little funnel. All the time squeezing the hoses to "burp" the air out.. I've done it til I can physically get no more coolant in. And not getting any air out when I squeeze the hoses. In my eyes that should be bled but I need to run it up to double check and can't because... Well we know why No pics of that stage. Unless you want a pic of a little red funnel and me massaging hoses ooooh errrr hahaha. Finished tidying some wiring up in front wheel arch/behind where bumper lives..don't want to chop anything til I'm happy every thing works so owt I've not used has been wrapped up and tie wrapped out of the way. Also got the horns mounted down behind the front cross member out of the way.. With that all finished I could refit the front bumper for good... Fairly pleased with how that's turned out.. I don't want to get too optimistic. Cus summat will probably go tits up.. but I may actually finish it.. well I've got to. It's booked in for mot next week (28th) and then mapping on the 1st.. so it kinda has to be done. I also need to plumb the boost controller in. The wiring is all there but I wasn't going to bother for now and just run gate pressure (7psi spring may creep to 10psi who knows). But john was happy to tune it until we run out of something.. now its unlikely il run out of fuel with 8 of bosch's finest 550s squirtin away, and it's very very unlikely il run out of air with the great daft thing doing its best to suck small children off the pavement as it passes.. but it's quite likely il run out of clutch around the 350/370bhp mark. But that will do for this version of the build. Unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious I've got left. Plumb in/mount boost controller Plumb in oil catch tank Finish bonnet pins (need to be noisy so can't til Friday) Double check coolant once I've run it up to temp again General mot checks (bulbs lights etc) Blow the tyres up and send it Fingers crossed for another bit of progress tomorrow. Cheers

Really enjoyed this thread - nice balance of lunacy and humour Thanks. I don't like to take owt to seriously (how can you) and hope this comes across in my ramblings (even if there not always in perfect queen's English haha. I've enjoyed keeping the thread up to date. I've come close to throwing the towel in a good few times (especially over winter with a newborn and the seemingly weekly hospital trips for me) I never thought it would get there. Then I read back and see how far it's come and I'm all motivated again. In some respects although the engine swap should be proper, the biggest changes are still to come. So I'm motivated to get it to a stage where it looks how I'm imaging (at minute it's just a fairly straight old is200 with black headlights).. Should be another update later.. if kids go to bed

Managed another couple hours tonight. Nothing particularly exciting, well in comparison to fitting v8s haha. But all needed to be done. First off needed to plumb in the Mac solenoid boost valve thingy whatsit... Didn't have a clue how it should be plumbed in (there's 3 ports and no instructions) however Chris from phoenix came to the rescue again with this diagram... So unlike the rest of the information on the world wide webular. This should be correct From my very basic understanding theres 3 ports. A pressure feed in (from boost side) a pressure feed out (to wastegate) and a dump port that the extra boost goes if your wanting more go.. Picked a spot on bulkhead where the wiring would reach and knocked up a little bracket. (Ignore the cable tie, I'm rough but even I don't consider a cable tie a bracket ) Now I needed a pressure source and from everything I've been told and read (so more than likely wrong).. they don't like to see vaccum so the feed has to come from the boost piping before the throttle flap.. however with no obvious points available and not having time to see my welder mate to Tig an outlet to an ally pipe I got one of those self sealing barbs they sell for silicone/rubber pipe . Quite a nifty little thing. Big strange washer on the inside to seal. Barb pushed through from inside to out. And a sealing washer and nut on the outside. Even comes with a little punch to do the hole. And assembled into the boost pipe just before the throttle flap (yeah I was nervous making the hole, I haven't got time to wait for another coming if I cock it up lol) With that in place I could put it all back together. With a little bracket to hold it securely to the bulkhead. And run new 5mm hose down to the waste gate aswell. Then a really exciting job, almost as exciting as the washer jets.. you might remember 394 pages back I split the headlights and painted the insides black, I also through away the orange lenses to clean the front up. Well I was going to get some of those chrome bulbs that flash orange. Well I didnt, and the local motor factor doesn't have them. And I've run out of time nearly. So I've bunged some orange bulbs in for now... (Told you it was exciting ) With that breathtaking mod done moved onto the bonnet pins. I remember now why I don't like bonnet pins. There awful things to make fit and work right. And last thing I need is bonnet through windscreen. Anyways after chopping the pins and adjusting and swearing and trimming and adjusting and moving and tweaking I've got them to the stage they fit properly. Also drilled all mounting bolt holes. But need to trim some more of the bonnet skin out on the inside and can't do that while kids are in bed... Least the latches fit down flush properly now With that done. I've pretty much ran out of stuff til the oil catch can turns up or I can be noisy (all being well both can happen tomorrow) Anyways that's all for now. But we're getting close Cheers

V8 turbo is200... Completed it mate Ok ok lets not get carried away. But it's "finished" enough to go for mot (well nearly but read on, especially if you like waffle and not many pics) Was hoping to be home from work early enough to get a couple hours while Mrs was asleep. Sometimes I get away for 2 on a Friday. Today... 4:10 off to a cracking start then haha. Have to fetch the kids from nursery just after 5.. ideal Needed to run it up to temperature and check for air locks and the such (and leaks, let's be honest there should be some)... Turned the key burbled into life and held a steady idle. Monitoring temp gauge, using the little temp gun, and keeping an eye on everything. Temp steadily rose to a smidge above midway on the gauge, temp gun showing 86 (it under reads water temp by about 6degrees if I use it on ally thermostat housing).. fan fired up, temp came straight back down by a good 8/10 degrees.. that is more than good enough to me.. it's not a car that I've built to sit in traffic in.. if it starts looking warm il turn it off. Checked the cooling system front to back top to bottom, all bone dry. First time for everything. Checked the highest point in the system and no air or any loss of coolant. So I can cross that off.. Onto the bonnet.. hacked some more of the inner skin away to give access to the latches. Il use the term hacked since it currently looks like it's been chewed out by an angry shark, and I've not had time to tidy it up (and now kids are back home and in bed power tools are banned outside) ah well. It's a characteristic once I get time I'm going to remove the inner skin fully. Kids in bed Mrs off at work. Baby monitors on. Best get cracking.... Oil catch can turned up at work today.. need something to run the cam cover breathers too. Not the finest quality thing. Definitely made of Cheap. 14 quid delivered. Perfect haha. Picked a spot of the bay without something in it (I'm running out of spots tbh).. knocked a little bracket up popped it in place. Just need some 20mm id pipe to run from the driver's side cam cover but one side is plumbed in.. will be ordering some off Amazon for next day delivery shortly. Finished fitting the bonnet pins, did I mention that I hate bonnet pins.. managed to cut my finger on the affor mentioned hacked bonnet. Once I'd done swearing and superglued it shut (my finger not the bonnet).. called those done. Tbf they've been a proper ball ache. But they fit perfect. Lock safely. And I'm not going to lose my bonnet mid boost. Popped an extra battery earth on up to the battery clamp. The is200 isn't particularly well earthed from factory so every little helps. Also replaced a load of little cable ties with proper hose clips on all the vac pipes and what not. Didn't photo that as it was basically dark. Lights checked, levels checked. With that all out of way all I've got to do is drop it off the ramps, blow the tyres up and pray. Lots and lots of praying.. As you can see it looks massively different from when I started this job all them months ago Called it a day. Since it was basically dark. Came in knocked up a homemade pizza and now sat with my semi smug face on watching gp practice. All being well once Mrs gets up tomorrow I'm going to give it a little drive on the private road..if nothing falls off catches fire or explodes. I'd call that ready May even film it since we love a poorly filmed on a nakerd phone video Cheers

Well bad news Took kids out this morning to langold park, met my sister and my parents there and let my eldest run riot with her nieces whilst my youngest surveyed from the buggy.. once they'd run all there energy off and I was happy Mrs had had enough sleep to function we went home with a detour for a happy meal sine they'd been so good.. Back home kids in high chairs food dished out Mrs left if charge. Time to go and try it. Blew the tyres up (they go down over a couple a month no big deal at minute) and dropped it down off the ramps.. Certainly looks quite purposeful from the front. Ignore the holes for the headlight washers. They've been binned but need to make some brackets to hold the covers back on.. Pulled the super silencer 9000 out the exhaust. Cracked into life and let the temp come up. No time like the present then Pulled down the drive And did a very slow lap of my "private" road. Feals so much better than before tho. No hesitancy as such stays running. Idles (albeit it slightly high) and sounds so so good with the silencer out. Back onto drive bonnet up. Bone dry everywhere. (I'm as suprised as you).. back into the "private road".. Got a tiny bit quicker snicked it into 2nd, then 3rd then 4th... AHH 10mph were flying now... Reckon it would pull 5th at that speed (my last vvti pulled 6th from 15mph to the redline).. Lap 3 coming up. Pulled up at drive quick look everything ok, one more go. let's be slightly braver. Punched the throttle while rolling at about 10mph.. it tried to spin the back tyres!?!?! Then made boost noises... Then went into fast forward it quickly became very apperent my road isn't big enough for testing v8s and I'd started to gather a crowd (curtains were definitely twitching, and I've never seen so many people stood randomly on there drives haha) Before south Yorkshires finest turn up decided to park it up. Another quick look over, all bone dry nothing apperently on fire. Happy days!!! So the bad news I hear you say. Well apperently the masking tape phone mount didn't work. And the phone exited stage left first time I tickled the throttle. So I had a 15 minute video of the floor But il be honest. I'm not bothered haha. It works it drives it boosts and it looks like I may actually pull this off... It's not even finished yet and I'm looking into heftier clutches for the next stage lol. But for now.. Its ready! Need to empty 18 month or rubbish and rammle out of it, and throw a bucket of water over it tomorrow it I get chance. But until Tuesday I think that's all.. Cheers
