To a degree, I find dyno numbers kind of irrelevent - I'm more interested in how well it goes. My little French hot hatch rally car gave 208bhp last time it was on the dyno - doesn't sound all that much but the number of people who come up to me at events and comment how well it goes suggests otherwise. (I'll deny it if asked and claim this post wasn't me and that I'd been hacked, but 508bhp is probably enough. To quote the late great Mark Donohue - "If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower." and it sounds like you can !!) Oh I agree. I was never doing it for "numbers" but I set myself the target of 500. And you may have noticed. I'm stubborn (putting it politely). Haha. I've been in stuff with 200 ish bhp and thought that's mega. And been in stuff 350 plus and thought it was a bit meh (power to weight does play a massive part tbf).. I would normally say you can't have too much power. But id call this enough haha Cheers

I’d say that if you can leave two black stripes as described you already have an excess of horsepower, you are getting less power transferred to the road just wasting fuel and rubber 😛 Definitely. But it's fun haha

I'd echo those posts above. I'm another that's not too fussed what the BHP is, overall it's about driveability. I've driven a couple of cars that would be considered having excess power, later one of them had the power dialed back and it was all the better for it. Obviously, I'm making generalisations and it's horses for courses and personal preference. Whatever 500+ bhp and even more torque is not to sniffed at especially with only c.1400kg to push. Matt, I have been meaning to ask, does your ECU have the option of loading dual Maps? I'd have to agree haha. If I'm completely honest my old 300ish bhp vvti is200 was probably more "fun" as you could use more or the power more of the time.. think similar M car of the era compared to wrestiling a lion.. it might be fun but you know at any point it could kill you (and probably will).. It's not about that tho. If I wanted summat I could use all the power all the time I'd have built a 250bhp civic or something.. this is different, very very different. Makes the hairs on back of your neck stand up and your eyes widen haha. You concentrate and you focus. And if you don't it really will bite you haha. As for the ECU I'm fairly sure you can. It seems to be able to do everything else (anti lag, launch control, boost by gear, and a million other things). But I would have to wire in a switch to one of the spare outputs to activate it, something to consider tho for the future! Cheers

Late to the party (as ever😬).... But what a brilliant result😎 and a credit to all your hard work. Enjoy it for the summer, then tinker next winter 😁 Thoroughly enjoying your thread and writing style... It's one I always look forward to catching up on. Thanks! Yeah I want to use it now, finish it off to a standard I'm happy with. And I certainly don't want to miss another summer with it! If you can cope with my random waffle and terrible spelling your doing well! I'm honest tho if nowt else haha Cheers

Well.. this week's starting well. Had every intention of having a bit of a fettle with car an bring it home. closest I got was a brief 30 second look at it this morning and instead I've spent all day in a waste place in Cambridge 🤮 Wasn't all bad tho.. lad in our group chat had a set of e36 bmw sideskirts. Little know fact with a bit of a trim they fit an is200. And since whatever I buy will need modifications to work with the body kit these seem like better option rather than cutting up 120 quid is200 skirts! Best bit about my random waffling. His work was 6 minutes from the site I was working at (rather than 2 hours from my home).. there tatty and need painting but they were cheap! And we like cheap! Grabbed a truly terrible pic when I'd slung em in the van. (They've been sat an age looking at dust) And since that pic is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, here's what they look like fitted (obviously not on mine but you get an idea) I think they should look quite smart, and will pull the kit in with the car along with adding fake Lows 🤣 winner winner chicken dinner!! I know I'm working in Manchester tomorrow. So depending how that goes I may get an hour on car, worse case is I don't but I'm definitely bringing it home!! Cheers

Tiny non update update 🤷 Works gone a bit mental. Well a lot mental.. plus I'm going away for a few days next week with kids so need to be in front.. So baring that in mind I've not had chance to "do" anything with it (I've got a list)... I did sneak five minutes to check everything on dinner so happy it was behaving it's come home for the night.. wanted to make sure I was keeping an eye on temps and what not. Yep. That's clear enough haha Pleased to say its behaved faultlessly (windows misting up in the pouring rain is annoying haha). Also, Any kind of spirited driving. Forget it. Not a prayer. Nowt to come.. no hope.. soon as it starts to build boost in ANY gear the revs rise like the clutch it's slipping and the angle your going down the road starts to alter 🤣.. fun at first but not ideal when I just want to get home (does make me smile tho) Weathers looking better for weekend so assuming things go to plan it can come home and it can have a proper work out! Actual work soon I hope. Cheers!

That's an option. Tbf the mid priced ones I fitted were terrible road noise and not great for wear. So using my logic they should be decent grip haha. Problem is I'm sure the box is on borrowed time. So the spinning atleast gives it an easier time than gripping and ripping teath off summat in box.

that's a good logic. A friend kept his rear axle, which could only handle about 200hp but sometimes less, alive with 280ish hp with the same logic. Hilarious/scary at the same time, but the best way to keep the car driving instead of in the garage with broken parts.

I agree, fitting slicks on a car for the strip is a good way of finding the weakest link in your drivetrain.

If your ecm allows for switchable maps and you have some sort of boost control could you not have a low boost map for those wet days.

or vent the vac feed to the dump valve , with a solenoid valve , so boost pushes it open .

I agree, fitting slicks on a car for the strip is a good way of finding the weakest link in your drivetrain. Yeah, there was a guy with a 450bhp ish is200 a few years back. Took it to Santa Pod. Bunged some slicks on the back and it twisted the prop in half in the middle! I remember him putting out a desperate call for someone to get a prop to him on the day haha. I don't need that type of aggro in my life (Side note he had a BMW diesel box, the little j160 in mine would exit stage left before the prop did)

David goldstraw drifted a V8 is200 in the BDC at around 330bhp for 18 months fine. Went up to 370bhp and started killing boxes.. My method is certainly the most exciting way of keeping the box intact. Even if the forwards progress gets affected (were not talking useless, unless it's raining haha). It's like an adventure, cus your guess is as good as mine on which way we're going 🤣

If your ecm allows for switchable maps and you have some sort of boost control could you not have a low boost map for those wet days. Although it can I believe do switchable maps, it would need additional wiring running plus a switch. And even on baby wastegate spring pressure (6.5 psi) it's over 400bhp/ftlbs. So it's never gonna be tame haha. (Did consider the switch for running more boost tho in the future 😂)

This is really a big bummer. I have enjoyed this thread, and finally the car was in working order, but then not. I undersatand that you lost the mojo with this car, it has been fighting you a lot. I guess you summed it up pretty good, the magic is gone. I was hoping there was a but at the end and that you would dig deep and rebuild but I guess this is it. It has been an epic journey, an interresting and entertaining thread. I always looked forwards to your updates, so I guess this sort of is the end of an era. I really hope you get some money back from this one and that you find some other car that yoy and your kids can enjoy.
Best of luck with your next project!

Such a disappointment for you. I totally understand though. Years ago I had a tuned Mini. It kept going wrong. Eventually it ate the transfer gears and although I got all the bits I needed to repair it, I just lost all interest in it and sold it for a huge loss.
Hope that you get some closure some way, somehow.
