I'd love to bring it to a show, especially if it's one I can get to in the day as childcare on a weekend is an issue. What shows/dates are there? Isn't there one at Mallory later in year that's not a million miles from me. Cheers Yeah!!!! The Gathering is at Mallory Park, 17th/18th September As above, itβs been a great build all the way through and Iβd really like to see this too Ideal. Mallory isnt a million miles from me. I should definitely be able to get for day even if I can't camp.

Well I've been a bit busy with work. Which is currently a bit of a blessing but I have had odd half hour spare here and there so cracked on making it "MOT ready".. The back arches were a cause for concern. Yeah the seats do tilt and slide so you "can" get in and out. But there's a handle on the outside so they should really open. Since the kids are desperate to go in the Choo Choo car figured easiest option was cut the arches.. making MOT man happy, my life easier an kids happy not having to clamber through the gap Marked a line both sides with masking tape, stepped away altered it stepped away. Finally happy with it settled on summat like this.. My normal weapon of choice is the grinder but figured the Dremel and a tiny cutting disc may be more accurate/neater. Held my breath and set to Looks like I'm committed now. Mirrored it on the passenger side jobs jobbed. Except. It only left 2 bolts holding the "door" section of arch on. Not wanting to lose a section on a spirited drive decided a 3rd bolt near the cut should help, so big drills and riv nuts out and we have this.. also helped pin the arch in exact right spot so there's no mis alignment between the two sections. Happy with that.. touched the cut edges up with a tiny brush and some black. Job done. Seems strange to be able to open the doors haha Did a couple of bits of "finishing" off including refitted the washer bottle I'd forgot to refit (that would have been awquard at the mot).. also checked I'd got a full set of lights. Needed to stick some fuel in so I could run it up to temperature again. Β£1.70 a litre for super certainly wasnt fun. But pleased to report ran til fan came on, bone dry, no leaks, no smoke, no steam. Does this mean it's "done".... π€· Well it's that done I've started phoning round insurers. Had a decentish quote from classic line, is anyone else using them? Waiting for a couple to call back tomorrow and had a few run a mile when I mentioned the power haha Working somehwere down south tomorrow but depending how week goes could it be back on road for weekend? Wel see Cheers

Nice solution on the doors. Classic line are great, used them for years (NSRA scheme).

Me as well. Have both the 2000 and the XJ40 insured with them. Both very reasonable.
It's also worth considering that 5000 miles per year is a bit of a sweet spot when it comes to insurance policies. If you can swing that then you can save quite a chunk each year.

Looking Good ! are you closing the 'cut' ends up ? I wasn't going to. Considering how light the arches are they're incredibly strong. There fully open underneath so all capping the ends up will do is create a curse word trap.. il see how it goes. Cheers

Great to see you're making more progress.
It's getting rather sophisticated eh? Opening rear doors and working w/screen washers. π
Whatever next..π
As usual looking forward to more updates.π

So another little update.. managed to get it insured today one of the benefits being stuck in the van for 4 hours.. didn't end up going with classic line in the end. There quote wasn't "bad" wasn't the best or the worse. Ended up with who I was with before but will consider them again in th future, I've also put my Mrs on it as a named driver just in case.. which could be erm. Fun π. looks like things are getting serious now (just need to find time to get it tested).. Speaking of getting it tested the headlights were foggy. They were letting appearance down plus it sets the tone for what the test is gonna go like in my experience. If it looks a hanging nail, chances are they will find summat. If it looks right chances are it will be... My potato cam struggled to pick up how foggy they were. They were also scratched from bumper being on and off a million times.. Managed to grab half an hour today so set too with the 600/1200/2000 grit wet and dry.. before I went at them with the machine polisher and compound. It's not the transformation of some but they certainly look better! An improvement no doubt. With that done rolled it outside for a quick bath. Right about the time my Google pics said "on this day" last year and year before. This day last year I "finished" it (again).. day before year before I fetched the kit! It will be finished one day haha.. so starting with today. It's certainly come a long way. And just for reference. Here's where we started.. π Anyways. Kinda stuck til I can get it tested now. But I'm desperate to kick its head in! Cheers

Good luck with the test! Totally agree that looking 'cared for' makes them looked upon more sympathetically.

Yeah as above. Engine number isn't on the test (good luck if he wants to see it, it's not visible without one of them tiny cameras that they shove in unspeakable places haha).. but I do need to update logbook when I'm feeling brave and don't mind dealing with DVLA.. Speaking of feeling brave, I'm fully committed now. Test is booked tomorrow for 1 o'clock π.. if it goes to plan it's coming home for the weekend. If it doesn't go to plan it will be getting dumped at work with face on.. Done a few bits of tidyin up and fettling today. Nothing really picture worthy tho. Gearstick surround back in bit of cleaning, battery charged etc. All very mundane at side of making exhausts and what not. Oh and new airfilter turned up since the last one got damaged when it was being a kettle and detonated the thermostat housing (you know the waters hot when it melts the air filter) Anyways. This time tomorrow il either be smug or sulking. And a bit confused no doubt... Cheers

Well... What a day that's been... Got to work this morning and it appeared the rest of the country was sensibly hiding at home from storm doris. Normally we'd have emails coming in for stuff, calls none stop. Plus jobs comin in for next week. As it happened the phone rang once and we had about 3 emails all morning.. Needed summat to pass a few hours before the test. So like all sensible people in middle of a amber weather warnin, gale force wind, sideways rain. Gave car another wash then pulled it inside for a polish π cant say I'm not keen.. Now I'm not sure if it was just too cold, polish had gone on a bit thick, or the polish has gone off (I've no idea how old that stuff is, bottle has gone brittle it's that old).. but what a pig to buff off that was, I was contemplating firing the steam cleaner up and blasting it off with tfr it was that bad. But I persevered and the result wasn't half bad (still needs a clay and machine polish when my mates free).. Finally after what seemed like a lifetime it was time to set off for the test. And I won't lie I was absolutely terrified.. would it make it the couple of mile to test place, would it behave, would a low flying Wheely bin wipe me out on route.. all unknowns.. well. It made it! Drama free The wait was shocking. Not helped by fact it didn't want to idle (needs the map tweaking has done for a long while even on old engine).. ecig glued to my lips pacing round like an expectant father dodging torrential rain outside. Scared to look haha. So the result.... Never doubted a thing! π Tester even commented on how well put together it looked and how well finished off it seemed! So id call that a win! Taxed it sat in there car park and went on my way. This is where I had a bit of a wobble So cars finished, all legal and back on road after major rebuild, proud of what I'd done. So on auto pilot set off to my dad's work the same as I have for the last well... Forever. Got there not really sure why and the guy he's worked with for last 20 year (and known for 40 year) was there clearing stuff out. Garage is obviously closing but was never meant t be like this and there's loose ends to tie up. He knew why I was there and understands, came and had a look at car but it wasnt what I wanted. We had a coffee, a chat, and I won't lie a cry. And went on my way home. So how does it drive now. Well roads are terrible and I'm not wanting to abuse it too much while it's "running in".. but it's as fast as I remember, as unhinged panic inducing as before and better than anything it behaved (mostly) and nothing fell off!! It did do something a bit strange at high revs, 5k up while spirited driving, it just switched off. Like someone had pulled the plug?!?! Stranger still it wouldn't bump start it was like it had lost all power. Cycled the key and it fired straight back up.. so I need to look into that (probably gonna need the laptop in and log what's happening). Journey home was pretty uneventful (other than a fallen tree on the lane 5 mins from home me and 4 blokes had to drag out the way). Only one thing to do once I was home. Yep. Needed to pick the kids up from nursery so figured I'd take the Choo Choo car. They were more than slightly excited (thought my eldest was going to explode) came all the way home in a gear too low on and off throttle making brilliant noises all while Mrs gave me disapproving looks π With that that's today done. Tested, legal, working, niggles (wouldn't have it any other way) and home! Mrs is at work all weekend, so it's daddy day care, may aswell use it to do any running round we've got to do since the car seats are all ready in (man logic).. Will give it a quick level check in morning before I go out just t make sure it's happy. Anyways thanks again if you've got this far. And sticking with my ups and downs.. Cheers
