It's been crossing my mind now and again for a while... do I keep the Merc or get something else? I was considering just putting it up for a swap for another classic - no money changing hands, just an exchange of cars of equal value.... Really don't know... I'm really lusting after a Fintail at the minute. If I swapped it the finny wouldn't be in as good nick as my Benz, but I ain't scared of a bit of work! Aaaargh! What do you think? Does anyone know of a possible swap? Or should I keep it? Or if I do change it what car should I go for?! (The more barge-like the better! ;D)

Keep it. Keep plugging away on the V8 conversion till it's done. Then show it / drag it / race it next summer, basking in the massive respect you get from the rest of the "community" for building something so cool.
Then sell it. Everyone will always remember it as "your" creation that way. Plus you'll get maximum fun with it before starting the next project...(anyone else forseeing a fintail with a 6.9 ;D)

;D Thanks for the support NickB! More often than not I don't want to change it, but sometimes I get to thinking about other cars that I really want, or when an engine comes up and I start thinking about putting it into a classic! It will be great when it's done - it's just that at the minute I'm feeling I've bitten off more than I can chew!! I'll keep at it and keep in mind the end result! But if a Fintail DOES come up I might not be responsible for my actions!! ;D

I'd say the same thing, your car will be great when it's done, stick with it and you'll have a car more interesting and more fun than any tidy but bog standard fintail!

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be easier to fit the V8 into a Fintail? (I'm not certain, but I reckon that the bonnet line will be higher than on your current Benz)

That would be a right shame. Have you got your megasquirt box sorted out yet?

Persevere! Once you've acheived it, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about along the way.
My wagon's mods are taking ages, but I stand back and look at the good bits to remind myself how good it's looking. There's always the Photoshop finished pic to really spur me on!

Cheers guys! ;D The Megasquirt box isn't built yet - I have to psychologically prepare for that one as I'm no electronics whizz! I think it would be easier to get a V8 into a finny but saying that I think some models came with them... so it would kind of defeat the object of the project I suppose... I am thinking about buying a complete, running V8 as that would definitely speed things along quite a bit - I'm having problems sourcing parts at reasonable prices at the moment . Then again people are wanting daft money for the engines too! I passed up on about three or four V8's 'cos I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, and now I really need one I can't find any!! You know what it's like though - you get back from a days work and the last thing you want to do is freeze yer tits off in a dingy garage cursing at engine parts! All of a sudden sitting at a table with a soldering iron and umpteen electronic components doesn't seem that bad a prospect... maybe I'll start on the ECU... It just wears me down when nothing seems to get done, but I will persevere! ;D

I think you should defo carry on. But also i think it is a good idea to get a complete running V8 motor. you see running but dog-eared old-style S-class's on the Bay for less than £200 regularly, i'd be keen to get one of them. I'm no expert but if your existing engine's got problems i imaging you could easily spend £200 on gaskets just to have a look inside!!
Also get cracking on your ecu! As you say you can do that 'in the warm'. Then at least you will have made some unarguable progress.

If the mechanical stuffs good, then this would be the best way to do things, as you would aslo have a complete set of running gear / brakes etc that is up to the power of the new engine, and could be incorporated / cannibalised etc into your existing Benz. A complete parts car is usually so much cheaper than the cost of accumulating even a fraction of the usable / useful parts.

Good point about getting a rotten S-class. My problem is that I don't have any space for another car . My dilemma about getting a complete running engine / rebuilding the 450 I have is that if I do rebuild the one I have, I'll know that everything works and nothing is about to go bang - and it'll stand up to the turbos ;D. On the other hand if I got hold of a complete engine I might stand a chance of getting the thing running and installed this side of summer! The 4.5 V8 engines hardly ever come up - there's one on eBay at the moment but the guy wants £220! I'd happily go for a 350, or a later lump, but people have daft ideas about what they're worth. I'd never pay more than £100 for an engine dragged from a scrap car no matter what it was! I've collected all the parts needed for the turbochargers, and the fuel injection, so all I really need to do is strip and rebuild the engine. Not many parts needed for that - a camshaft, head gaskets (other gaskets I can make), timing chain... not a lot really. Getting hold of a camshaft is proving tricky - the breakers want £100 for a second-hand one which is ludicrous! If one turns up at the scrappys I visit then I'll get it for a reasonable price, but it's the waiting... I think my problem is patience (or lack of!), but I hate not finishing a job once I've started it. Besides, I've told too many people about the project now, so if I give up I'll look silly! ;D
