What about a nice MK3 "pub landlord" spec Auto Supra turbo? rear wheel drive, cheap as chips, pretty solid as long as the HG is intact, and suitably disrespectful to the planet.

re: the 750il option. reshell it into an e34 525i. easy peasy swap and loses about 500kgs in 3 days....... it would also fit in an e30 but thats just hard work. 540i with mot fail, £200. maybe £300 if its real nice. 530i v8 5 speed manual gearbox, flywheel, basically a manual conversion, £2-300. few bits and pieces, make a grand total of £1200-£1500. then assualt the nurburgring- shagon wagon; 'ring sideYAH! EDIT, just read the straight lining bit, DOH! reshell 750 into e34. tune the suspension for drag should be easy, manual shift pattern is already there on the auto box. add some nawz too if you must.

What about.........a tatty C4 Corvette? Ditch the interior and leccy seats and it'll be down to about 1200kg. Cost you about 2k for a working (but tatty) one (Auto). RWD, V8, aerodynamic, Lotus handling and extremely well planted on track. Ferocious amounts of traction. Get rid of the 4/5 catalytic convertors and silencers. Should see you good for 160MPH and 5.5 to 60. Not necessarily 'frightening' (well, depends what you're used to) but quick and the potential is there for some very easy power - oh yea, they handle great as well, which'll help you in the cornerning stakes... Took my friend out in it, planted it in 1st doing 25mph and broke both our necks so that's now the story of the week - Does make you go "Hang on!". Piles on speed quite disconcertingly past 80 as well....... Waved bye-bye to mine today though, actually very sad about that so kind of on the lookout for another one (auto this time though, or a 6 speed).......Such great machines! Guy from Italy bought it, flew over this morning and is driving it the 1700km back! Leg-end. Corvettes...... handle? I'll take your word for that. Dad's friend had a ZR 1 and that was all over the place (it might have been his driving though). Volvo Amazon & 850 T5 five pot - instant death Saab 900 T 16 & silly engine mods - understeer, engine death and then death for the driver. Hmm, struggling.

My two cents - Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC. A semi-decent 4th Gen Manual starts around £800 IIRC, and good for 180/190BHP Uk/J., and they are really quite exciting. Not as nimble as, say, a DC2 Teg, but take the spoiler off and it'll have a reasonable sleeper factor too.
Be careful though as there's quite a few shitters out there and people saying non-VTECs are and autos are manuals and curse word like that. Rar.

myeeer, fwd will be poo up the strip compared to anything rwd or 4x4. Not sure I buy this? If it's light enough and the tyres are sticky enough it can be quick. Once you start going very fast then it all changes, but light weight doesn't need that much power to accelerate hard. Plus fwd is likely to be cheaper because it's not RWD, DRIFT, NOT 2F&F etc

The problem with most of the ideas mentioned is there's so much more to them than just swapping in some power. Older stuff usually has woeful brakes and decrepit suspension that's often as not even adequate for standard power. There's a need for a stronger axle too and more than likely a custom prop. There is a limit to what you can achieve without spending and it all adds up. The price of a project car and the engine is just part of the whole cost normally.
Also, I wouldn't consider anything to be close to "frighteningly quick" unless it's at the very least down in the low 13's, preferably 12's. Making a 12 second car for under a grand wouldn't be too hard but making one that could be driven on the street and put round a circuit for that price would be a bit more tricky.

In the right circumstances - yes, fantastically so - get 'em on a good bit of road with a decent surface and it's really very tricky to upset it or in some circumstances even get any tyre squeal, extremely well planted and very little nil body roll. They're seemingly very neutral with immense amounts of traction. My friend Sheridan who's a much more comptent driver than I can ever hope to be took it out and thrashed it and was very impressed with it and rated it extremely well........
However, get it on a UK B road or something that has rapid undulations, duff surface or potholes and it's all over the place - the suspension's so stiff it just locks up and throws the car about, making it feel skittish and a bit upset on anything other than a bowling green ;D

An older 2.5L Turbo Chrysler Voyager. They've been known to break into the 12s once you've upped the boost. And utter humiliation for the guys you beat.

It was that which inspired me to build my turbo Nissan Prairie. Very similar vehicle only smaller and lighter but still with lots of traction as most of the weight is up front. Mine only had a CA18ET in it but the potential was clear. A DET with some tweeks and you'd be in business I reckon. Handling was another matter entirely though. It wasn't know as Scary Prairie for nothing ;D

Ok, liking the Bimmer ideas, had a 740i, which i thought was pretty quick (Obviously before i bought an Impreza!) Early scoobys go for around the 3 grand mark, but go for an early legacy turbo and it'll be even cheaper! Mini with a bike engine!?! Anything with a bike engine!?!
