Along the same lines as the beemA, find a 24v senny. Seriously quick, especially if you chuck all the curse word like heavy seats and so on, out of them.
Also most already have serious weight-saving options, like copious rust ;D

How's about an alfa 75 3litre v6 there's one on the bay for £500 at the mo.. then stuff some laughing juice in if it's not quick enough for you...... think they're about 190 ish bhp as standard... witha few cheapy mods I guess you could up that a tad.... rwd with LSD and good balance too apparently... Oh and the fact that it's an alfa should scare you enough....

What about.........a tatty C4 Corvette? Ditch the interior and leccy seats and it'll be down to about 1200kg. Cost you about 2k for a working (but tatty) one (Auto). RWD, V8, aerodynamic, Lotus handling and extremely well planted on track. Ferocious amounts of traction. Get rid of the 4/5 catalytic convertors and silencers. Should see you good for 160MPH and 5.5 to 60. Not necessarily 'frightening' (well, depends what you're used to) but quick and the potential is there for some very easy power - oh yea, they handle great as well, which'll help you in the cornerning stakes... Took my friend out in it, planted it in 1st doing 25mph and broke both our necks so that's now the story of the week - Does make you go "Hang on!". Piles on speed quite disconcertingly past 80 as well....... Waved bye-bye to mine today though, actually very sad about that so kind of on the lookout for another one (auto this time though, or a 6 speed).......Such great machines! Guy from Italy bought it, flew over this morning and is driving it the 1700km back! Leg-end.

3 grand would get you a good Nissan 300ZX 3 litre twin turbo. 300BHP but easily boosted to 400 and beyond. Proper sports car too. Scarily fast! Nice way to die.

The VW 1.8T are popular for a reason, cheapish, lightwightish, can get them 225bhp as stock, 300 easyish, more if your're mental and can fit in a lot of little cars - Mk1 Golf, VW Lupo, Renault Clio.

Evo 1? Depends how much of a budget we're talking about really. Although I do like the swift idea.

Slightly diiferent: Could pick up an Audi 90 Quattro for literately a few hundred, and fit another engine... 1) An S2 engine c/w ECU/loom/etc went for £850 at the weekend (230bhp, 300bhp easily obtainable) 2) There is an A8 4.2 V8 on ebay for £750 (290-bhp std, though need to spend a few hundred to convert to manual) Sould be able to strip a 90Q down to 1100-1150kg. AND it will go around corners

2.9 XR4x4, pick one up cheap with a ropey engine and sling a 24v into it, straight swop using the 2.9 sump, strip out the interior and it'll shift up the quarter mile even if its raining, get lucky and it'll be well cheap, under 500 quid, deffo under a grand, add in a couple of hundred quid to mod the gearbox for a higher top gear and it'll hit over 145mph bog standard.
It'll have LSD, disc brakes, abs, gas shocks, power steering, alloys etc, they handle really well once your used to em (add more power if its understeering)
