Next step was to sort out the rest of the front suspension. I stripped a hub/upright assembly and found that the uprights were corrosion pitted at the trunnion seal face. This is the kiss of death for these as it is why they will break at that point. So I rang Canley Classics only to find that there are no new late style uprights available for two months They do have trunnionless conversions though so I'll have to ponder on those. In the meantime I have dragged the diff from it's resting place, boxed it up and sent it off to Arrow auto engineering. Oh how they laughed in the Post office when I took that in. Then decided to start on the sills. These have been a saga. As purchase all those years ago it had fibreglass sills. They were bovine fecal matter. I had a think and decided that steel was best and ordered a pair of sills from a well known panel beater and classic panel maker local to me. They were more fecal matter and sit in my scrap heap rusting gently. So I cut the glass sills up and tried my first bit of fibreglassing (I should add that this was a while back). I then put them to one side until the day I would finish them off. Yesterday was that day. The near side one is not too bad but the offside neads a bit of work. So that's where I'm up to. EDIT. Aaaaargh! pictures!

Finally! The sills are sandwiched with a strip of stainless to take the load off the 'glass. Bit of wood is 'cos the lower supports are not there.

I had a pile of pre-cut stainless steel arrive two days ago for the fuel tank so it was time to start on that. I already have an in tank injection pump so I made up the internal mounting rings for that and the level float. I hadn't got any plate large enough so had to TIG some flat together. As you can see the flat was not quite wide enough for the bigger flange and the holes are not tapped yet.

Tank coming on, filler still to do. It's been a much longer job than anticipated. It's baffled and has a swirl pot made from a wine cooler I found in a charity shop! The return goes back into the bottom of the swirl pot via a machined venture so that it constantly pulls fuel in. The swirl pot also forms a sump which is 25mm lower than the tank base. Pump is in the swirl pot with the intake below the tank base. Sorry about the location, it's a sh1te hole at the moment outside my workshop. I've not shown the bottom because it's not as distortion free as I would have liked (stainless is such fun!)

Still chipping away at it. The diff came back from it's rebuild a week or so back so I got on with the axle. Using my new power file I cleaned up the casing and also the axle case. Two coats of epoxy and two of 2k in a colour known as "money shot"! It's a long story. All the suspension will be this colour plus other bits.

It's wifey's, she's keeping it clean lol.
The diff was from an old hot rod pop I had years back. It had been abused by an Essex V6 and had spent the last 10 years lying around. Arrow engineering checked and rebuilt it to stock specifications.

The back brakes for the axle were a set of 9" drums I acquired many years ago. The back plates were in awful condition, encrusted with thick hard rust. Due to the plague no chance of blasting so they spent a few days in my patent "Haigh acid bath de-rusting system". They came out spotless so epoxy primer and 2k "money shot" to finish. For reference this was the drums None of the rest of the brakes was of any use (the shoes matched the drums!) at all so I ordered the lot from Burton's. More soon hopefully, if the plethora of other stuff I've ordered ever turns up.

Some progress today. Fuel tank pressure tested and 3 pinholes welded up. Plus a heavy parcel arrived from Burtons. Just waiting on some bolts and the axle can go in along with the tank and start plumbing.

Got the axle and fuel tank fitted today. The axle was hard work as the bushes are a tight fit and until it's all assembled nothing is easy to get aligned. Once it's all in the bolts fit freely. I'll start on the plumbing tomorrow after I've got another non car job finished (or at least further on the way).

As I still had the Pop on the rotisserie it would have been rude not to make use of it to do the brake and fuel lines. So over it went. Sorry about the scruffy state of the underside. For reasons that I'll cover later I'm not doing the pipe work at the moment. So on the brake assemblies on the back axle. I had a set of 9" English axle brakes (as mentioned above) to go on the 105e axle. There are issues with this. The drums sit further on in relation to the back plates so a spacer is needed between the half shaft and drum. The trouble is that the amount required is greater than the length of the spigot on the half shaft which gives the concentric location for the drum. Burtons happen to do concentric location wheel spacers to suit and the thinnest is 12mm. I'll have a pair of them then and see what I can cobble up. Spacer as supplied, too thick. Also the radius on the spacer spigot will not allow the drum to sit flat. There is not enough material there to machine a square shoulder so it will have to be in the drum Put the 4 jaw on and clock the drum up. Now machine a radius on the drum location making sure there is a location bore left. So far so good. So I drop the spacer and drum on to measure up for spacer machining. Turns out it needs to be 6.5mm thick so it's back to the lathe and whizz 5.5mm off after clocking up. Drop it all back together and a satisfying gap of 2.5mm. Seems about right. The spacer as it ended up. Not a bad days work!

Pipe work. I had intended to run the rear brake pipe and injection flow/return in clips but not against the floor i.e. in free air so to speak. It seems that the BIVA tester men do not like this so a rethink was in order. I ordered a length of 75 x 3 ally flat from Metals4u and set to . First trial fit. All ok so carry on and fix with c/sunk stainless screws. And with the rear brake pipe going on. The 8mm injection pipes are still to go in. At the other end I made a stainless bracket to hold the pipes and a stainless fuel block I machined up . I'm also machining a part for a Torqueflite 904 on my big lathe( ) at the same time. More on that later.
