Today I assembled the fan to the rad and got it mounted for the last time. I also did a few of the little jobs that I've been meaning to get done for a while. Tie wraps on the rack gaiters and clean and detail paint the chassis number.

Another day, another bodge uncovered. The inner wings looked good, I modified them ages ago and never noticed anything untoward. They fitted the wings and grill shell ok. Yesterday I started to strip the nearside one for paint and immediately started to get filler dust. It turned out to be over 1/2" thick. It was covering some lovely (not) repair work. You can see the shape in the photo. The inner flange (which is a spot welded piece) was attached with snotty blobs of mig and then smeared with filler. The outer face was battered and then filled with the aforementioned thick pud. Only one thing to do. Remove the flange to do it properly. You can see the other delightful repairs on the mounting holes. I'm not sure what to do with those, they are solid and can't be seen (not that that's a good reason). I made up a sort of dolly from thick flat that fitted inside and managed to get a better shape to it. I also flattened the flange but the end had a dodgy bit hiding under more bodgery. I'll cut the end off and remake that. I finished at that point as my back was not happy and I'm making tea.

Had a couple of days off for other stuff and back on it today. I made a template for the end of the flange and got that and the captive nut welded back on. Refitting was straightforward. I had drilled alignment holes before I removed the flange so that I could fit it back accurately (a relative phrase when applied to Ford Pop's). It now sat flat as well. Drilled a few holes to replicate spot welds and Tig welded them up. The outer face will still need some filler but not as much as it had and I know it's solid now.

I started out today outside stripping the inner wings but the rain put pay to that. So back inside to fit an oil catch can. I decided a week ago that on cost Vs effort it was sensible to buy a cheap oil catch can from China via Amazon. It arrived a couple of days ago and for £22 it's a cracking bargain. There was a slight issue though. The supplied mount could be removed and mounted but then you couldn't fit the can back on, or you could leave the mount on and then you couldn't get at it to fit nuts. So I made a small auxiliary mount which solved the problem. I now have to wait for a couple of weeks for two fittings to arrive from China because none of the supplied ones suit my installation and I couldn't find anything in the UK.

I've had good results with odd alloy fittings in black from T6 Design on ebay, may be worth a look?
