The Herald suspension works well enough but it is a bit wide as standard for a pop. So the decision was made to narrow it(some how!) to allow the front to get good and low. It turned out to be "interesting". Here's the stock chassis with just the motor mounts on it. You can't just narrow this set up by chopping the wishbones down, they would end up stupid short. In the end I decided to make all new front end parts based on Herald but with shorter wishbones and the inner mounts moved in. The amount was split about 50-50. This was a good compromise. So, some 1" cds tube. Plus some custom made top ball joints from Amsteer, some laser cut plates and you start to get somewhere.

The lower wishbones were made using a similar layout to the Herald ones and built on a jig. All of the tubes were fish mouthed in my lathe using a hole saw in the chuck. Works a treat!

Not had time to add any thing today but a nice bonus (of sorts), my new VIN number arrived from DVLA.
More to come tomorrow with a bit of luck.

Ok, a bit more. The suspension was narrowed on the mounts as well so that meant some creative thinking. I ended up with some rather complex recessed brackets. The rear one is bolt on as the original mount but with two instead of one bolt!

The suspension bushes are my version of a linered poly bush. I machine the bushes from Oilon and use stainless liners. Very smooth, long lasting and do not allow any wayward movement (also known as slop!). These bushes are fresh off the lathe and still need cleaning up. It all goes together like this. You can just see the weld around the narrowed rack case. The actual rack was machined and the thread recut in the lathe.

Remember the steering column bearing with added filler? Here's what it ended up looking like once it had been cleaned off. Not pretty. Chop it all out and repair. Now stick a large piece off stainless in the lathe, mill it a bit and end up with something a bit more pleasing to the eye. It has an oilon bearing and bolts from inside.

Going off piste, this is my one off gear shift for the MT75. It not only replaces the huge stock one but it puts the gearstick right where it needs to be. It's actually a really nice precise shift. Still needs tidying up.

Sorry for the slightly random approach to this, I'm cramming quite a few years into a few posts to get up to date. The rear floor used the original floor pan modified to suit. Note the pieces let in to clear the top suspension bars!

This brings us up to date as of about a year ago. The government consultation on the VHI proposal made me think the build together with the fact that I did a DVLA V555 when you still could. The history was not convincing even (changes of owner, number plate and description, all very random!) if I decided to wing it and just put it back on the road. So BIVA it was! I'll start covering that next.
