I have been either very brave, or very stupid, and taken on an exceedingly rotten bug as a family project. We shall see how it goes, what I can say for sure is that there is a huge amount of work involved and I am doing this down to every nut and bolt. As I have stripped the car down it has become more and more obvious that nut and bolt restoration is the only way to go with this car. To give a little bit of history the car was bought for a lady 18 years ago by her parent as a first car, however the lady in question only learnt to drive a few months ago. As a result the car sat outside under a tarp for 18 years without turning a wheel and has, not surprisingly, deteriorated a lot. I went over to collect the car yesterday after spending hours trying to free up the brakes. I did manage to get both rear wheels turning but unfortunately was unable to free the fronts. I honestly think drastic measures may be called for to get those to turn. As a result the car was dragged onto trailer using two garage jacks and a winch, which was still very difficult as the car had been stored on gravel. It also had the unwanted side effect of making the structurally weakened frame head give way completely. All loaded up and ready to go. Home at last. You can see in this photo just how bad the rot in the front subframe is from the fact that the front wheels have shifted forward within the arch until they are fouling the arch lip. Work starts on the strip down. Carpets out, seats out, oh dear floor pan is monkeyed and the heater channel is not looking to clever either, although I think that may be repairable but wont know for sure until I blast all the paint and loose rust off. You may also notice the bars across the footwells? Well those were to fit a pair of recaro seats. They will not be staying! With them fitted you can't use the back seat and there is no fore and aft adjustment available. Driver side looks a lot more solid but I can't say I am happy with it. The previous owner told me that they paid £1000, and showed me the invoice, to have the floor pans replaced about 10 years ago. Well as you can see the drivers side was done, I do not think the passenger side was touched, but it was done very shoddily. A floorpan for one of these is not expensive I can't see any reason for using several sections of flat sheet. It wont have the structural strength needed as there are no strengthening ribs. The worst part is that the original rotten floor pan is still there underneath rotting away the replacement so the whole lot will have to cut away, thrown away and started again from scratch. After one morning work the car is looked like that. Now the bonnet is also off, both doors will now open and interior is now stripped out bar the dashboard, seat belts and headling. More photos to come tomorrow provided it stays dry enough to work. I'm not prepared to try and put her in the workshop over the pit until those front wheels are free turning and not liable to fall off!

Will it be a straight up resto? Or will you be building to a "look"?

You might want to leave the recaro mount bars in for now because it might fall apart without them until you’ve redone the floor!

At the moment i'm not sure it depends where the muse takes me. Currently I am tending towards keeping her fairly original spec but with a few subtle tweeks i.e a sports exhaust, some tweaking to the engine and a disc brake conversion up front. If there is money left in the budget a set of slotmags might find there way on to it as well.
With regards to the recaro rails I agree they are lending much needed structural strength at the moment, saying that I do intend to seperate the body and chassis and repair them as separate entities, I should get much better access to both that way and a tidier job in the end.

Work continues today and guess what I have found yet more rust! First job of the day was to continue stripping out the interior guess what I found a solid panel! The engine bay firewall is sound. A patch is needed above the o/s rear arch but all in all not too bad for rear passenger compartment. Next job was to strip out the dashboard once again we find some solid metal. A couple of bubbles around the corners of the windscreen but nothing serious. Under the fuel tank oh dear.

I had hoped to repair this wing at first but after judicious poking I am seriously considering just replacing it. Thankfully the rest of the shell is repairable with cheap repair panels. The wings are expensive to purchase and I think I will have to bite the bullet and buy that panel. This panel is so rotten that the strut has actually pulled away from its mounting.

As guz said, a 1303s should have discs and a 1303 should have drums. The s should also be 1600cc as opposed to 1300cc, and will also have the more desirable 3.88:1 ring and pinion. If you are interested, I have a mint 1303 floorpan in storage that I know I'm never going to use. Framehead, pan halves etc are all immaculate. Pm if you want to know more. Having said that, personally I don't think I'd bother with this car as anything other than a donor car for an incomplete resto project. Not only is it rotten pretty much everywhere so far, it also looks to have been repaired badly in places too. Once you've priced up all four quarter panels, both heater channels, both rear crossmembers, both door posts, four wings and two doors, you've probably exceeded the value of the vehicle and you haven't even got paint, interior or mechanical yet! I've restored some real dogs but that one needs a big bottle of brave pills!

It doesn't need all 4 quarter panels. O/S front is needed but the nearside only needs a repair panel that is around £20 from VW heritage. Only 1 heater channel is needed the O/S is fine. Doors are fine Wings are all repairable although I probably wont bother. Only one door post needs repair and it only needs the repair section Rear quarters panels I intend to repair rather than replace. Both rear cross members are okay.

A good tip from the USA programme "Chasing Classic Cars" featuring Wayne Carini, is if you find the brakes are jammed on, to cut the rubber brake hoses to hopefully free them off.
A few years ago, I rescued a 1972 K-reg 1302S that was in a pretty poor state (e.g., seized front calipers, rust coming through below the rear window, etc.) having been sat for donkeys years, managed to get it up and running, and sold it to a local custom car firm. Didn't make any money on it, but had some fun reviving it and satisfaction of it maybe being returned to the road one day in one form or another...

Just priced it all up with brand new parts and what I have already purchased.
£500 Purchase price. £35 Collection cost. £450 Body repair sections. £446 Chassis repair sections. £77.50 Door cards. £105 Exhaust £260 Wiring loom £72.50 Battery £13.96 Tail light £25 Carpet set
So that's just shy of £2k so far and hopefully I can source a lot of those panels second hand and reduce the cost significantly as a result.

The good thing with a beetle is that repair panels are readily available for near enough the entire car and they are fairly inexpensive. Welding scares a lot of people off, but to be honest it needn't. I was terrified of welding when I first starting restoring cars and ended up passing up and even scrapping what I would now consider easy repairs simply because I was scared to weld it and couldn't afford to get someone else to do it.
Just remember with rust repairs to follow a few golden rules and you will find yourself enjoying tackling rust.
1. Get a decent quality welder. Chinese specials of eBay are not worth having, they will put you off for life. I use a draper unit that is small enough to carry around but will take big wire reels and a big bottle of gas. I would also invest in an auto darkening mask, a welders apron and gloves. My whole set up was about £500.
2. Preperation is key. You cannot weld to rust, so take your time to really clean up the area to repair until it is good and shiny. Cut all the rot out until you have good strong steel.
3. Practice on scrap to set up your welder.
4. Cut your repair section acurately so that you have no gaps to fill and then you will get a much nicer weld.
5. Most of all take your time.

It's been a very busy 3 days here even if not a huge amount of the car has changed. The last two days have seen me doing a 500 mile road trip to Blackburn, via Wolverhampton in on a parts run. Things will now start moving again as we have some of the parts to actually start rebuilding so watch this space. Passenger door is now off. Drivers door is being obstinate and one of the cross head set screws has rounded off, so I have stripped that door in situ and the body can lift off with it still in place and get the door off later. All windows are now out and the interior is pretty well stripped so next step is lifting the body off.
