Major progress has been made today and it feels like I have really started to turn a corner with this project. First job of the day was clean up and then aligning and clamping up the new panel before tack welding the panel into place. Then I test fitted the new front valance and the bonnet to check panel alignment and it all look pretty good even if I do say so myself.

Is it tacked in now? Can I ask what the inner cost please? I am "into" escorts and the new sheetmetal, while welcome, is very expensive.

It is tacked in now and would have been fully welded if I hadn't run out of day light. That front quarter was £200 hence why I am repairing the other. Unfortunately the drivers side was to far gone to be repairable. The rear clip was £125, the front valance £50 ish. Most repair sections have been between £10 and £25 and the new heater channel I need is £85 complete.

I'm enjoying your progress reports, so thanks.

Lots done today. I am starting to get bored of this area under the fuel tank, I think I can safely say it is improving though. O/S front quarter is now fitted. I then added this patch to the front corner of the spare wheel well. Which gave me the structure needed to do this. before offering up the partially repaired wheel arch. at last it's starting to resemble a beetle again. Thats all the funny bits and strange angles done so I should be able to get the under the bonnet bit completed in about 2 weeks. It would be quicker if I didn't work 50 miles from home or had this coming weekend free.

I’ve just separated my 1303 body from the floor and have similar rot to deal with.

Mostly from VW heritage but I have also been trawling facebook marketplace, eBay and autojumbles for bits as well. I also spotted a place called parts emporium which seems to have a good stock of second hand parts but also seemed a little on the dear side considering they are second hand (sometimes in need of extensive repair) parts.

This project has slowed down a bit due to my having been accepted on a PGCE course, thus having very little free time to work on cars. Saying that, today I did manage to get some beetle time in. She is now inside which makes for a much easier now that I have made space and the days are closing in. Today has seen the removal of the remains of the offside heater channel. I have offered the new one up and it all fits nicely. But I have few repairs to do to the front cross member before I weld it up. Thankfully the majority of where it needs to attach to the shell is good solid metal so it should well up without too much fuss. Small progress but progress all the same.

On a side note, I found and made this little model of a 1303s and obviously I had to paint it orange.

Ok we have some more progress. Work has been taking all of my spare time until recently but I found a bit of time for this car today. Last time I posted the heater channel had been removed. The new one has now been offered up, test fitted with door and is well on the way to being fitted. The other thing I have been doing has been taking a lot of time! With the use of a heat gun we have been stripping her back to bare metal. On the mechanical side front struts have now been sourced and are ready to go on and I have sent the crank shaft and cam shaft to a local engineering shop for inspection. The news on this front is somewhat mixed. They reported that both were serviceable, in that the engine would run, but the camshaft has one lobe that is significantly more worn than the others. The crank has been re-ground in the past, so will need oversize bearings, but is well within tolerance, so can go straight back in after a polish.

Recently we have been focussing on a different part of the restoration as the welding has been getting a little tedious. So onto something a little more immediately rewarding. I am very lucky to have a leather workers sewing machine here and the expertise of my mother who restores and re-upholsters antique furniture. Calling on this expertise we have been making new covers for the recaro seats, as well as the rear bench, so that we have matching upholstery throughout. This is what the seats looked like coming out of the beetle. Rotten fabric and absolutely minging! First job is to strip the seat down to its bare frame. Not too bad a job on these at all as they are a pretty of good quality and are well designed. Squab is then separated from the backrest, and seat patterned panel removed. This is simply held in place with a large plastic clip and a few hog rings. The patterned material cleaned up nicely and is perfectly usable after darning a small cigarette burn. The side bolsters and webbing straps however are fit for the bin! Good news all the foam is in good condition and can be reused. The grey vinyl is also in good condition, so the only material that must be replaced is the black fabric. I am in two minds here about replacing the patterned material as although it is in good condition I need to make a cover for the rear bench from scratch and I don't know that I will be able to match the pattern. Would it look to odd if the front seats had patterned inserts and the rear seat left plain? Otherwise I could do away with the pattern completely and just use plain black fabric for everything or purchase some new pattern so that the rear seats can also have matching inserts. The next stage is to very carefully unpick the stitching and use the old fabric to make paper templates in order to cut the new. Then we cut the new fabric to shape, sandwich some fresh piping between the layers and pin up, tack sew by hand using a long stitch and remove the pins before turning it right side out to make sure the piping is in the right place. Everything looks to be positioned correctly so next stop is onto the sewing machine. Oh and I have matching yellow piping on the new carpets and think I will be painting the body either black with yellow coach lines or vica versa.

I had the same seats in my Karmann Ghia and they're the same ones in my school project Beetle - they're very comfortable and far less bouncy than the stock ones. They're originally Vauxhall/Opel so you may find a back seat with matching inserts?

I do like a good upholstery refurb. Actually, I like watching other people doing one. Not so keen on doing it myself

I do like a good upholstery refurb. Actually, I like watching other people doing one. Not so keen on doing it myself It's proving to be not a particularly difficult job. Time consuming yes, but not overly difficult as long as you take your time to measure accurately and have reasonably strong hands to get good tension on the fabric. Unfortunately I found this out the hard way and have had to remake one bolster cover as I forgot to take into account the hem line. First trail fit of the side support and it looks pretty good The centre section of the seat has come up really well and the new fabric has tensioned up nicely. Once the final hog rings are positioned the remaining creases will disappear.

Seats are really starting to come together now. After some intricate cutting, pinning, hemming, machine stitching and hand stitching we now have a completed backrest cover. The hand stitching came down to the unfortunate fact that our sewing machine was not capable of sewing through 2 layers of fabric, beading and a layer of vinyl at the same time. The new cover is fitted over the frame before being stretched and secured with listing rods and clamps. It was only after I finished fitting it that I realised that I had stretched the cover over the rail to which the insert secures, oops. Undo the offending listing rod, position it correctly this before attaching the the new seat insert. All fitted up and looking pretty good. A couple of minor fixes to do as I appear to have made a little wobble with stitching that has introduced an annoying crease in the LH bolster. The offending stitches will need to be unpicked before some careful hand stitching work. Before anyone tells me I know the recaro badge isn't straight in the picture but it isn't actually affixed just pinned roughly in place.
