Final update for now is the Corsa. It’s now got just over 80k on the clock, and is about ready for some love. We’ve now owned this for 3 years!! So we have a list of stuff we are going to do; Sort the stem seals Change the clutch So since the stem seals mean the head has to come off, and changing the clutch means splitting the engine and box, we are going to pull the engine, give it a once over on the stand and then put it back. We need to swap some hoses, one split when Ella was still learning, I have a set from the scrapper ready but they should be easier to sort on a stand too Ordered a gasket set in Also, the brakes had a long pedal, I’ve given them a bleed, but have started refurbing the spare set, so they’ll go on when it’s in bits. Painted with POR15 but need painting and reassembling There is a clunk from the back, which I thought (from my limited driving time) was the exhaust hitting underneath, but might be a damper (?) so need to check that out Going to paint and fit the body coloured bumpers again, hopefully they won’t get abused as much now, the back just needs a tidy up and the front is silver so needs a repaint. Whilst we sort that we can repaint the passenger mirror too. And finally there is a damp patch in the n/s rear footwell. Which is the topside when it is parked on the drive, so probably a door seal but current plan is to lift the carpets out and check that out too. But then, if I was allowed to modify it we could fit the vented discs and callipers that just came off of the van… would cost a set of pads as the discs are only 20k old They might not fit over the 13s, but I’ve a set of 14s in the shed… which with vectra hubcaps would look almost the same, and if a damper has gone then we could do a subtle drop at the same time….. need to talk Ella into modifying her car

Might be worth checking to see if a rear coil has broken. Check the 'pig tail' that sits on the rear beam is still there. Brian.

Ella headed back to Bangor today, plan was that she wasn’t going to take the Corsa (as there is limited parking, and a couple of others have a car there already) so once she left we could start on the list of jobs. Train left at 12.15, with a change at Birmingham. So just after she left New Street we’d done this Haynes manual says that the engine and box have to come out as one in a Corsa, so a few minutes disconnecting wires and hose. The manifold came off without drama and then the engine mounts and it lifted straight out. Couldn’t get the short driveshaft out, so left it fitted. But once it was on the floor, so tugging whilst it got tapped with a hammer and it popped out. There’s a fair amount of burnt oil in there, but it’s needed looking at for a while now. Head gasket looked ok, we poured some wd40 on the tops of the pistons and wandered off for a brew and it was still there afterwards, a couple had dropped a little bit but don’t think rings are a problem Can still see the honing on the cylinders, though it’s a little shiny front and back, so don’t think the bores are glazed (?) So think the issues are pretty much just stem seals. There is quite a bit of burned oil in the exhaust ports and manifold, can also be seen on the exhaust valves, went to remove the valves and found that of the 3 I have (don’t really know why I have 3, they seem to breed in the back of the shed ) they are all too big, so have had to order another with interchangeable spring seats, so will have a better look when that turns up and we can drop the valves out. There is still a load of k-seal or radweld floating about in the waterways it seems from before we got it, so whilst it out will try to flush it out a bit more. Gave it a clean up and now wait for bits And we were going to change the clutch, but we’ve definitely have our money’s worth out of this one

Are you taking the pistons out to check the rings ?
If so , would definitely be worth a quick re hone of the bores .

Would be easier to clean the carbon off of the piston tops with them out. Would you fit new rings, they are pretty cheap (£40-50 for a full set) of only if they look ropey.

If it was mine , i’d hone & re ring it .
You’ve got it this far . A bit more work & a little expenditure & you’ll have an engine you can trust & will go on for many miles .
I think if it’s been burning a bit of oil it doesn’t do the bores or rings much good .

I think if it’s been burning a bit of oil it doesn’t do the bores or rings much good . If it was purely about money then we should scrap this and buy another. As the cost of the bits so far exceeds what it’s worth. It’s not really cost effective to rebuild these I don’t think, when a running MOT failure can be had for £100 it’d be cheaper to swap the wngine and keep fingers crossed, this way though we should know it’ll be good for years as you say, without having to cross our fingers We like to call it educational, that way it’s an indirect expense too Look at all that learning Just needed a little push to make sure I’m not throwing money at it for no reason….. anyway, rings ordered, I’ve got access to a honing tool, will go watch some YouTube vids and wait for bits, thanks

You really can’t put a price on the education side .
Honing is easy , take your time , steady movements & plenty of lube .
Almost sounds like I’m describing something totally different ! 😂

So haven’t updated this for a while, there is of course a reason but I’ll come to that About 3 months ago we had the head off, was pretty oily So we gave everything a clean up, lapped the valves, reset the tappets, fitted new rings and gave it a home New gaskets and stretch head bolts, and got it all back together after waiting for a couple of bits…. The big end bolts are stretch bolts and we’d lost a couple of the jewel like valve collets somewhere At the same time we fitted some cheap new driveshafts as the cv boots were starting to look a bit shonky, and the drivers side outer had been losing a bit of grease We then started it, which went fine except there was a drip of water under the egr sitting on the edge of the bellhousing. Had a look and it was either the egr leaking as there is water running through it or it’s on the head gasket and an external leak. We did compression test And they were all the same, it runs fine, no evidence of anything engine side. The smoke has gone, and the exhaust cleared…. Took the egr valve off and the gasket was wrong anyway But was blanking the egr gas side so not a huge problem. So I ordered a new gasket in the hope that would fix it. Ella didn’t want the car until she goes back after Christmas. The gasket turned up and sat on the drivers seat, it was like Schrodinger’s gasket…. Until I fitted it, it was a £3 fix…. But the moment I fitted it and the leak was still there then it’s another head off job, which is gaskets and stretch bolts and finding a better quality head gasket to the one I’d just fitted. So it sat, and then Ella is coming back next weekend, but has to go back for her last week at uni. So it needed fixing

Whilst it was sat I did fit some new springs and whilst the springs were out, had a mess about with some 16s And I scored a set of Corsa Sport 3 spokes which was very exciting. went to pick the wheels up and the guy kept me waiting and was messing me about a bit, asked me to pop back in half hour… so I wandered off and got a brew and went back and thought he was trying to give me a different set (I’m still not sure they aren’t) he knew they were rubbish as he’d been trying to tidy them up whilst keeping me waiting… so I looked at them and was about to wander off, but in the end bought them for what I thought they’d weigh in for. I probably should have left them, as I don’t think this helped my motivation What I thought I was getting and why I actually stunk the back of the van with.. the smell of aerosol and thinners so they got dumped in a corner, as a waste of £70.. or I need to suck it up, get them refurbed and new tyres and they should look pretty good but not sure they are worth the cost of a refurb, I should probably just find a tidier set without the rot under the powder coat If anyone knows somewhere that can do a cheap job on 4 wheels, please let me know

So back to the car itself The tiny water leak Fitted the egr gasket and so far haven’t seen any water (I’m pretty sure it’s the head gasket, so not convinced it’s fixed even though I can’t see a leak) and then had some rough running issues, the fault codes were for the egr but symptoms pointed to maf sensor. the egr was looking a bit oily and mucky, so found a new replacement for £20, also ordered what looked like a new maf.. but what arrived wasn’t And it is still playing up But have given the rear wheel bearings a tweak, as they were an advisory last year, bled the brakes and fitted new discs and pads to the front So hopefully I can pick the maf up and that’s all it is, and get an mot as planned this week

The EGR valve gasket that has the blanked off portion is for the Z1.2XE engine, yours is the X1.2XE and even though the engines look similar there are many variations

So, end of the thread After 5 1/2 years and about 26000 miles the Corsa went over the rainbow bridge today. Ella finished her degree in the summer and is currently working full time in home care, still in North Wales. The car was getting tired, using a fair amount of oil and smoking and generally starting to cause a bit of worry. Biggest problem was that it’s 200 miles away, and she needs a car full time for work. So we got hold a replacement, a lupo, which I’ll add detail in the lupo thread. Then at the start of the month met halfway between Bangor and home, swapped cars and returned. Tried to move it on, but the price of scrap and the Facebook marketplace selling hassles meant that it went over the rainbow bridge today. Needed it gone before the end of the month as no point paying an extra month. So with about 6 weeks MOT left it went for one more drive, and drove as well as ever. It needed jump starting because the battery got swapped, was pretty clattery in the top end but drove fine. The fuel light only came on in the last couple of miles. Genuinely upset to see it go like this, it’s been a cracking car and never let her down, but there we go
