Did a job with my electrician mate Sean today, We were running a cable from the house to the garage and fitting a socket for the elderly man to plug his mobility scooter in. Once we’d settled up, he talked about selling his car. He bought it for his wife in 2005 and when she passed away he sold his big car and kept this. His nephew is a mechanic, so takes it away twice a year for a service. It’s really honest, with some bits to look at, so I bought it and Sean drove it home! It’s a 1.2 16v 5 door More photos later, sorry it’s not that retro Oh, I paid £170... and didn’t haggle

I swear the old folk of this world are a godsend for barely-used Retro motors. That is a cracking bargain at £170 - guaranteed any other person on Gumtree, eBay or wherever would be trying to get 7-8 times what you paid for it. Time will come when there's none of these bad boys left so you have done well to save it. I would be looking after that. Granted it won't be worth mega money, but even now, I haven't seen a decent one for a while.

Always been a fan of the Corsa B, will go the same way as the Nova in another 5-6 years i'm sure! Great little bargain you've got there!

Granted it won't be worth mega money, but even now, I haven't seen a decent one for a while. There is a little bit of surface rust in the near side rear sill by the door and a few knocks and bumps, but I think most of it will clean up and it’ll be a very tidy car Ella can’t drive until next year, so plan is to work on it, polish it like mad, fix the dodgy bits but keep it standard. Hopefully she’ll be emotionally attached to it enough when she starts driving it to treat it properly and look after it (and if not, it’ll start breaking down a lot!)

Well it’s had a wash... could do with a machine polish particularly on the roof. We’ve fixed the radio (worked out how to put the code in) I’d like to keep the cassette player, so will look at adding Bluetooth onto the amp or something (I think sweetpea did something similar, so may give me some tips) Ordered a new passenger wing mirror (£10 from eBay) to tidy this up (Painted gaffer tape makes my teeth itch ) Ordered a trim piece to replace the sunroof winder one, which has been melted by airfreshener chemicals And also a gear-lever gaiter, as the one on there looks scruffy That’s our starter, other things to look at are Dent in boot and panel not in line Front bumper has had a knock And the rusty bit on the sill Then tidy up underneath, look at clutch and brakes, service (though I checked filters and as he said it has just been done

John - that looks a little belter - I don't think that you are anywhere close to me otherwise you would have been welcome to run that over one Saturday morning and I would have it sorted for the price of the paint !

Well, we went over the Farm, so Ella has been driving Some bits turned up, so we fixed the sunroof trim with a secondhand bit and replaced the gear gaiter Replaced the rubber gasket on the aerial And the mirro turned up, but was the wrong one... since it was only £9 we just butchered it for the bits we wanted and fixed the existing mirror for now, there was a crack in the back so we put some resin in it rubbed it down and blew it over.... it’s not great but it’s solid and not held on with tape! And it got washed and polished by Ella and Tom too It’s done a few trips here and there, but Ella is camping at the weekend then a couple of weeks NCS, so we’ll park it up and concentrate on the Fug. Also think we’ll do the head gasket on this before we use it too much, they seem to be a bit of a weak spot and we want it to be reliable

I think on this little engine they had timing chain issues and also camshaft cap issues which should be sorted by now, I am also lead to believe you cant skim the head much, if at all as the front timing cover chest thingy goes up the block and onto the head, if you skim the head too much the bolts to fix the timing chest cover don't line up to the head

Will read up on the other bits too

Nice little car you have there, suffering many of the classic 'aged' Corsa b issues but as you're finding, all nice and easy to resolve I'm about to replace that headunit in mine, always used it with a tape / 3mm jack into my phone

Nice little motor! seeing B's like this makes me miss mine, i had a '99 as well (attached a pic below - there's a small project thread buried in the archives here somewhere haha) I did the ariel gasket change on mine as well - such a simple yet satisfying thing often overlooked, simple things make a big difference imo. All the best with it anyway - just be very careful of any signs of rust and get on top of it as soon as you spot any (if you do) as sadly despite looking pretty mint cosmetically my car was condemned to the big scrapheap in the sky earlier this year due to the underside being made of chocolate - was gutted! Also if you're interested i've got a few bits from mine still hanging about - got a haynes manual that you can have for free if one is needed? as well as a couple of spare wiper nut covers (trust me they are SO easy to snap!) - i've no use for them now sadly so you're more than welcome.

The Corsa is at the farm in the shed, we’ll swap it over with the Fug when we go on holiday (it’s got high security things like windows, doors and locks!) and then plan on doing some jobs after the Gathering Ella helped sort some scrap out last weekend, and we had another weigh in So we’ve bought a few bits... Got a head gasket set and we are going to change the clutch, it’s quite high, and I’m sure it will have been ridden by the old fella who had it before So will change it before it gets abused by a learner:D Not turned up yet, but on its way So no actual progress, but not forgotten

Now caught up - what a bargain - you could have bought it with the proceeds from the weigh in - that's amazing!!!!

A bit off topic but, when you weigh in wire do you strip it? and if so how do you do it? I am looking for a way to strip car wiring in a worthwhile way.

A bit off topic but, when you weigh in wire do you strip it? and if so how do you do it? I am looking for a way to strip car wiring in a worthwhile way. Erm, no I was going to buy a wiring stripping machine with a builder I work with a few years back, but it didn’t happen There are manual machines that are cheap but labour intensive still, Or electric ones that save the labour but are expensive... So we just sort it, I turn over quite a lot (I’m always picking copper up, I can’t help but look in skips, I got some pipe out of a loft the other day.... I have a bit of a problem ) This is what I collected since I weighed in on Monday So we just sort it, this is what I got on Monday; SWA £500 tonne Domestic £960 tonne Singles. £1460 tonne Bright copper. £3890 tonne Copper pipe. £3390 tonne Swa can be stripped to domestic by removing the steel Then singles by removing the outer insulation Then stripped to bright copper, Which I have done, with a Stanley knife But the time involved means we don’t bother (unless it’s big csa cable) also as you strip it, it becomes lighter so there is less to weigh in at the better rate I weighed in about 250kg and it is boring after sorting the first couple of sacks, so we sort the scrap into those bags and that’s enough. Cut any fittings from copper pipe and weigh them in separately, but if it’s clean copper it’s more money than mixed... but try to keep it simple tbh If I didn’t get as much, or it was all one type, I’d probably get a machine though!

Had to sort a fault at the farm, so spoke to the mechanic who has a unit. He’s got timing pins that I can borrow, and another engine he was trying to get me to take off of his hands, which is handy to know
