So this afternoon I got round to resealing the clutch slave. These can take a fair bit of bleeding. I keep the pedal up, take out the bleed nipple and top up the cylinder then refit. Then just put some pressure on the master and wait for the air to leave. Luckily I have a professional spec pressure bleeder.....

Amazing. A thread full of Rover.... Heaven.
I still have regrets (about a dozen times a day) about selling my R8 220gti hatchback when the Mrs got knocked up.
Bought a bloody CRV with the cash.... Sakes.
GTI was red, one owner from new, and 52k on it

Love the coupe. Very pretty. The handling is ok, but the hydragas system is feeling a wee bit leggy so il use it till something lets go and then fit the Mike Satur Coilover conversion. Do these work? The coilovers on a P38 (different beast, I know) compromise the ride.

When I was an apprentice, one of the sprayers in the bodyshop had a white over grey 220GTi. he gave it a full respray, new half leather seat covers and did the wheels etc. He always kept that car mint. One of the guys in the stores had a black Metro Turbo. I still miss my Rover days...

The coilovers on a P38 (different beast, I know) compromise the ride. As in replacing the air suspension? They are just a coil spring conversion, not coilovers. They will always be a compromise, as they cant be adjusted. I have tried various set ups on my RRC's but everyone uses their vehicles differently. Coilovers work well, and the whole set up is beautifully developed and made (I don't buy things like that without lots of research) Mike knows his stuff, and tbh, its the way the factory would have gone if they had the budget (later TF's use a slightly inferior suspension set up, however, they did get non adjustable coilovers) There are various choices between Spax and Gaz units and valving to suit different uses. Of course, you can also easily replace the springs to experiment with different rates, but the MS system is ace. and it would be wise to start off on the exact setup he has R+D'd. Il be honest, I'm still not 100% sure the MGF is a a keeper, if I impulse buy an MGR V8, or MGSV etc, I would probably move it on. Its the Tomcat I have wanted ever since I was a kid and that will always have a special place with me.

Sorry, yes, I meant coils, not coilovers.
They were the first thing to go on mine!
Take your point on factory budgets, it'll be interesting to see how the conversion works out.

I ended up using 110 springs and Terrafirma dampers on my RRC, they had just a little more clearance than standard, but soft enough to flex off road, could also handle a reasonable trailer on the back. I did experiment with a few different set ups and this worked very nicely.

Awesome! So much retro goodness about the 200!
I was actually looking at MGFs recent as a fun summer convertible for the parents! They look like an ideal summer car, I bet the 160bhp ones are great fun too!

Sakes. GTI was red, one owner from new, and 52k on it CRV of all things! I had one I must admit, very good car, very dull but my god did it like a drink. During pregnancy her back issues were horrendous, crutches etc. So, CRV made sense. I fairness to it, was a 2004 and had 110k on it... For £1200 it was a bargain. So well built, barring the steering and pedals being a bit heavy, it was quite good to drive. Not too slow, the 2.0 is 170bhp from memory. Mixed use was 25mpg. A run could get 32mpg if you behaved. Killer was the £300 pa tax and £650 pa insurance. Plus we moved rural, so it went from doing 100 miles a week, to about 400+ My GTi was good, not concourse, but good and original..no rot... One wing replacement when I got it. Interior was like new, engine bay similar. Barring the usual m series oil.leak on the corner of the head. But it was tiny. I'd love an 820 vittesse 😎 There's an immaculate white 220 GTi doing the rounds. Guy on the R8 page has it currently. Saw it at POL a few years back, unmarked.

It was local so thought it wouldn't hurt to have a look. The VVC's are faster, but at lower revs there is not so much difference, unless you want to always be 5-7k rpm il be honest an MPi would still be great fun (also cheaper) Even if I move on, I'm glad I had one to try out for some time. The character, the noise behind your head, the way it handles and the amount of fun such a small package of repurposed parts can be has to be tried. They can not stay this cheap for long so do it sooner rather than later!

mgmrw, I do admire the original 800's. This one was one of my faves this year at POL> If space and time where no object, I would have a Vitesse hatch and Sterling saloon.

That was close, but disaster averted luckily.
Just had the bonnets up comparing bits on the SW and the Coupe. I just happened to give the top hose a squeeze as I eyed the coolant level, and there was a 'hiss' Swapped the caps on the cars, and the hiss moved to the other car, the pressure part has fallen to bits on inspection. I know the caps are an issue, and some people replace them annually. But this is the first one that has ever failed on me.
Anyhoo, I've been looking over the coupe here and there, few more things to add to the list...
Radiator looks old, so will be replaced when the coolant is drained for other work. Not sure yet, Valeo OE or find a nice alloy one. Some of the coolant pipes are not ageing very nicely so may aswel be done now. Cambelt and water pump and the coolant elbow gasket. I'm going to change the oil again as I don't know what the last person put in it. Brake rebuild and braided hoses. Suspension seems well damped and ok at the moment, so might not upgrade just yet. Need to choose some new tyres. I'm going to replace the Cat, as I'm going to do the rest of the exhaust it has probably aged a fair bit so a new one will breath nicer.

On the MGF front I have had some changes of mind.
As both Rovers will end up on GAZ Golds I think I will keep the Hydragas set up, especially as I have found a company that will replace the spheres with freshly valved, and re nitrogened recon items when my old items decide to not play ball any more. For now I am going to choose some new tyres and dampers, but I don't think I will be following the norm with this.
I can only collect parts for now, this one cant come off the road until the coupe is tried and tested and good for the daily grind.

Just a small update, but some satisfying little jobs done as i'm still waiting for parts. The two sunroof spoilers were not springing into place, so not working at all. Managed to drill new holes and refit springs in a different place. Now working good but annoyingly managed to drill all the way through one so need to find another... The rear spoiler had been removed and repainted just before I bought it, but was not fitted correctly, if you look at my original photos you will see the front sitting high. Now sorted.... Got the remnants of the 'coupe' badge and the other sticker off finally without any damage to paint... The clock surround had been painted silver, annoyingly eye catching, plus a huge reflection in the screen. Painted it black again now.... Also... ive got a 2nd hand manifold, that I will put stainless studs in and re heat wrap. New down pipe and new cat. No probs with the above, but the centre pipe has caused a lot of problems finding just the right one, with two different companies saying they cant help. Now should have one on the way, if it really is the same as the picture, it will be correct! Will wait and see. Fitted a new door switch, so alarm and interior light works correctly. Painted the wiper arms as quite tatty looking, back on with new blades.

I spent 2 days on the paint. Clayed, compounded, polished and waxed. Hard work in this weather but well worth it. The dull paint used to feel very gritty, now it is like glass and has a lovely shine to it. All the leather has been cleaned and treated so it looks and smells great in there now. Took it to its first show, the evening meet at Earls Barton and it surprised me how much attention it got. Also at the same show, my mate brought out his Ninety V8 after its 10 year long restoration.

The MGF will be going up for sale. I have changed jobs and now work locally and cycle in, its just sat there unloved. I use the Rovers at weekends so would be better if this moves on to a new home.

Well I haven't updated the thread for a while. I have been busy, and all the cars on this page have now run out of mot. I don't have much time to use them anyway. I have far too many cars!
Anyway, the MGF was advertised a few places, I know it would sell if I put it on ebay, but I don't want to deal with all the dribbling morons that enjoy wasting peoples time. It is still here, and I think its the best way. A lot of people, even enthusiasts on the various fb pages etc seem to scrap or break there cars when the slightest little bit of money need spending on them.
For now, it will be allocated a little space, stripped down and thoroughly sorted. My main aim will be improving its performance in all areas, preventing future issues and changing a few bits and bobs to my personal taste. I am not a fan of show ponies so it will not be made shiny. I prefer to keep original character.
The tomcat needs some work on the sills at the rear. One of the brakes is sticking on and a few suspension knocks have surfaced. So I will need to give this one some attention..
The SW, well, it gets a full service and check over before and after every rally respectively, so its in very good health. Will get round to booking an mot at some point.
The next projects on the list are 4 wheel drive. A head swap on my Mk1 Shogun, Possible a body/chassis swap on the oldest known mk1. Really I also need to dig out some Land rover parts and get the S3 TDi sold. il add the LR updates here, I think I have a Mitsu thread on the go somewhere or il start one soon.

New car incoming.... Some Triumph flavour on this thread soon. All Shoguns and Land Rover have been sold
The rally rover is kept in good health and still gets regular airings around the farm. Tomcat and MGF have been mothballed for now, as I have no use for them and no time to use them.
My life is pretty much consumed by bike racing, so I only really spend time on a bike, or sometimes driving a practical car. This is where the Triumph comes in. More will be revealed soon, it is having some work done and I'm expecting to take delivery late September.
