Bought this last month, it had sat in a barn for the last 24 years. Don't know that much about it, but in the quick look I've had there are some very good and some not so good bits. I think it was probably finished in a rush to get it out for a show season. It is a mk3 Escort body over a fabricated chassis. There a number of changes I want to make before it comes back out, basically making it look more standard. But before I start the rebuild, first thing is to get an engine in it and get it mobile.

Please keep that front end, it looks awesome! The only thing I'd change is the big intake on the bonnet.

First how to de-handle the doors so you can't get in, First key the paint so the filler sticks Then put as much filler in as possible. Finally smooth and paint for a long lasting invisible modification Of course you coul,d always do this in reverse to put a handle back on!

That is seriously cool! Not sure about the head lights but by the sounds of it you plans to make it look more like an Escort sound like the right direction.
Look forward to seeing this evolve.

I believe there was a small block Chevy in There before, it came without an engine but with a Muncie 4 speed. So I will try a small block I have spare to see if it fits! Some of the bad bits, it looks like the chassis was painted with rattle can satin black and no primer so will need to be blasted and painted. Once I got the boot open, with an angle grinder I was pleasantly surprised. Battery box and a well fabricated fuel tank, filled with 24 year old petrol that had turned in part to a consistency that was like chewing gum! As suggested by someone on my original post in the general section I also discovered that the boot has been extended by about 4 inches so will need a rear light panel if anyone has one? Also looking for the rods from handles to door latch if anyone has any going spare? Will try and get it up and running this week, but then this thread will go quiet as I'm working on another project which is fighting me all the wayðŸ˜

Had a full day on the car today, pulled an engine out a chassis I had and changed it from an auto to a manual. Dropped it in the car only to find I need to make new engine mounts as the standard Chevy ones don't fit. That may not sound like a lot, but it took two of us a full day to get it to where we were happy with the position etc. We are now not sure if this gearbox was ever in the car or whether it was in mid conversion when put in storage. The propshaft is too short, doesn't meet the gearbox and the crossmember is no where near the quality of the rest of the chassis so unless some information pops up, it will remain a mystery!

Not a great deal to add to this thread as since the last update I got my Mazda minitruck painted and back on the road after a few years, been getting the bubble car ready for paint and changed the engine and gearbox in the hot rod. But to do all this I had to move cars around and the escort ended up in the warm part of the garage, so at the end of the night, well it would be rude not to have a poke round and see what's under the cracks in the paint. The answer is, someone else's dream, my nightmare. I started off with the most obvious cracks, in the rear arches where the body kit had been split and lengthened to increase the rear arches to e the 15x15 rear wheels. In with the power file and what I found was not what I expected. The two halfs were joined by bodyfiller, not even fibre fill, just bodyfiller Now I know how I could botch the job and I know how I could do the job correctly, so I went for a compromise! Filled the gap with closed cell foam and glassed the two halfs together before a skim of filler to get the shape right. Why the compromise? Well the whole car seems to be carved of filler! The front bumper/grill is held on with 10/15mm filler, again not even fibreglass filler, which has thrown the whole future of the project into question. What to do now? I'm pretty sure I know both the short and long term answers. Both of which require a lot more work than anticipated. It's going to be a long road ahead!

All the crappy workmanship is unfortunate.
But it is still a good base for a very cool car...
( even if you'd have to start over with another Mk3 donor body )
Looking forward to see what you'll do with it.

I personally would remove the kit and rebuild the body back to original but keeping the rwd conversion. Cool project.

Yeah, I agree. I'd do a bone stock body for the Pro Street look, or big arches and different wheels for Super Saloon/Thundersaloon look. But keep the RWD & small block Chevy either way...

I think I'd be taking the easy route and ripping the whole kit off too. Either the stock arch look or RS1700T. But if you like this look, would it be easier to get hold of a new kit rather than grinding out all the filler? Which ever way you choose, please keep us updated.

They must of been mixing the bodge by the bucket load with a shovel, and putting it on with a plastering trowel

Unfortunately it's not quite as easy to go back to standard as the car is built to the width of the wide body, or to rip the kit off and get a new one. As the reason for some of the bodges is that he body kit needed to be split and extended. I've not really decided what route to go with the body yet, I know what I want just now but that can change overnight! But eventually it will probably involve taking a mould and making new panels.
