So George has been hit with a bug this week Poor lads been bed bound most of the week So I had to spend a few hours on my own on the van this week after work Removed the cracked front bumper new one needed, and removed a minimal amount of rust, treated it all with vactan rust treatment, I know George asked the question on rust removal on the underbody so I’ll ask the next question Paint for the underbody?? I’ve heard por 15 is supposed to be great?? Anyone used it? Thanks for all the comments so far and the advice given I think George listens more to advice on here than he does to my suggestions! Any input in underbody paint treatment appreciated

Por has a good reputation, any other reasonable epoxy won't be far behind. That said wben I restored the TR, I used bonda primer covered with stone chip and now 24 years and 100.000 miles of all year round use later all those areas are still fine. Personally I believe any reasonable quality paint with stone chip in vulnerable areas and regular applications of wax works well enough.

Thanks Kevin that’s good advice Having a car that long and using certain products and being happy is a good endorsement

Further stripping down done tonight We’ve found a couple of holes underneath One by a rear shocks mount No problems really George is keen to save this van His argument being how many decent ones are left?? At his age I had a mk1 van as did a lot of other people They’ve all but disappeared, vans are worth saving in our opinion We’re Into this for a couple of years I reckon, hopefully maybe we can get it done by next summer possibly

Looks very tidy, apart from a brand new one I sat in at the NEC car show in 1994 I don't think I have seen one with such little rust! I would be so tempted to stick a mk5 rs2000 front on. That's a tidy van. Cosworth body kit, slammed, tailgate conversion and painted in Porsche riviera blue would get my vote (loved the 90's) Good luck with the project. Bright orange or white with tiger stripes! Back in my youth, I wanted a Cosworth body kitted mk5 with a massive stereo in the back. Not mine, never actually bought one lol

^ That has to be done! The wheels you have would suit the look perfectly!
My focus is white, wish I had the balls to tiger stripe it!

Small amount of work done this weekend Front panel George tidied up now painted. with smoothrite It’ll be covered by the front bumper but now rustfree I spent a few hours In the back sorting the floor out Found a few small areas which will need welding I’m not having much joy underneath worth a wire brush attachment on the grinder I’ve ordered flap wheels and see if they work better for us.....oh and my grinder has decided to depart this earth today!!

Thanks may order a couple of those I have a wire cup wheel but it’s not the easiest thing that’s use under there with the grinder , not really removing the surface rust like I’d thought it would

We had pretty good results using the wire brushes to clean components, but that’s a lot easier stood up looking down at the part. I think you need to exert a fair bit of force to get good results and imagine that’s quite hard lying on your back..... Anyway, keep going with whatever works for you, and looking forward to the next update

I stole the idea to use an oscillating multitool with a scraper from someone on here, works a treat. Just keep a keen edge on the blade, sharpen regularly with an angle grinder. No need for heat.

Oh I don't envy you lying under the van with a grinder and wire brush attachment. Definitely go for the knotted ones. Last longer and don't shower you with as many bits of sharp hot wire!

For the interior/exterior etc use those striping disc's. They are brilliant. don't put much pressure on them, let them spin and they even last well. Nice to see a kid interested....
