Hey guys looking for some opinions....
Decided I fancy a cheap convertible for the summer, originally I was thinking of going for either a mk3 or mk3.5 golf cabriolet and putting my vr6 turbo engine into it while my mk2 is off the road, but I’ve got a friend trying to convince me to go for an mk1 mx5, but now I’m unsure what way to go, I’m primarily a dub fan, but I do see the appeal with the mx5, and with the engine out of the mk2 into it, it’d certainly be fun.
What way would you go, or do you have any other suggestions to go into the mix....

Or to throw a complete curveball... even just a suggestion for a cool old dub to chuck my engine into for the summer while I get the golf sorted, but yeah, pretty indecisive

Well if cheap fun is your plan, then might I suggest a street ka... These were mine, and they were fantastic fun!

Ultimate summer car has to be a dune buggy, doesn't it‽

I hadn’t thought of one of them, not sure if they’re my thinks, but I’ll look into them! I fancied a summer car for some roof down driving this year, after looking at mx5s and slks I ended up with a BMW z3. Loving it at the moment.

The Z3 with a 6 pot is great, not so much the 4 pot. I'd go for an MX5, you'll probably be able to sell it on for the same price in 6 months.

Not sure on fun but cheap. I tried selling this two years ago for £650 not a sniff even with less than 60k mile. Done another 16k in it since, for the cost of two front tyres.

I love my 80. Nothing better than driving with the roof down. Even in winter.

I bought a Volkswagen Eos. 2.0 TFSI MK5 Golf GTI running gear, folding metal and glass hardtop and as practical as a summer car can be.

These Rovers are surprisingly not dreadful and very, very cheap. You can get a good one for under a grand, a good-enough-for -summer one in the £500 or less area. They're not super sporty (unless you spend a bit more and get one with a bigger engine), but they are cheap top-down summer motoring. They won't be around forever either, so grab one while you still can.

Been tempted with these for a couple of years, but my wife's hatred of all things Rover and our need for family duties is dampening my abilities 🤔 Shame as I'm a Rover fanboy

I had this exact though about 2 months ago, and now I'm hooning about in a 1.8i mk1 mx5. It's a £900 banger but sills and arches have recently been done. I throughly recommend one.

I love the look of the Audi 80, both exterior and interior. If it were RWD it would be perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions, it’s made things worse now though, got a lot more going through my head than I had initially thought of hahaha! Away back to work for 2-3 weeks so will give me some time to look through them in more detail, but it’s certainly opened my eyes to a few more options!
