well I like mine anyway, mercedeslimos.... Great work on the welding and it looks like you caught it in time before it began really eating away at that inner sill and floor...nicely done. JP

Thanks. You're right, I've caught everything on this car in the nick of time. I reckon if left untouched for another year or so she would of been in much more trouble. I've still got to finish off the floor, battery tray, both front wings, o/s sill jacking points and maybe o/s front floor, rear panel and a couple of scabs on the rear arches.

Well today was a lot more involved than I wanted it to be. It was time to bite the bullet and get stuck into the nearside front sill and jacking point... The jacking point had rotted out and had an MOT patch poorly welded to it which has led to more rot. Not exactly a jacking point, typically rust like this starts after someone has put a jack under there. See: 1987 BMW E28 M5 Blue (Towards the end of the page). Jacking and Lift Points - A Visual GuideLove the colour, nice progress!

Quick update. Yesterday I finished welding up the holes in the nearside footwell, unfortunately I haven't got any pics of the job because my phone died. The repair section I fabricated was neatly cut in and welded including seam with spot welds. The only pic, but you get the idea. Today I took out the driver's seat to replace the seatbelt buckle due to it being very temperamental. The carpet under the seat was pretty grim with 32 years of filth. So I gave it a proper good hoover out. I also took apart the centre console and gave it and the carpet a good clean. I also replaced the passenger seat buckle so they are a matching pair. Smelling and looking a lot fresher. Once the interior was done I went about replacing these trailing arm links which were very worn and made quite a racket when driving over bumpy surfaces. Next up is to sort out the battery tray due to it crumbling away at a rate of knots.

Peace of mind is important especially on classics. Mechanically she's in great shape and doesn't bat an eyelid now. Once I'm up to date with project wife and kids I'll be back on the bodywork and sort out it's small tin worm infestation. Hopefully mid summer we'll see some good bodywork progress.

JP JP I find it takes me about ten years to get used to the design of a BMW. The E60 is only now becoming a car that I’d own and only in certain colours and wheels etc. I find by the time I get used to them, they are too old to be insured cheaply here anyway

I would give my right arm for another E28 - either in 520 or 525e flavour. for me, the most usable classic car out there. Timeless looks, reasonable performance and good parts availability. I so so want another but I fear I could not afford another :-(

Some very impressive welding and fabrication there - the parts of E28's that tend to go really aren't the easiest of sections to make and graft in properly but it looks like you've got it down to a tee.
Nice job!
