I'm amazed you got the car registered - were the chassis plates screwed on originally (or riveted)? Are any checks made to ensure it's not a stolen car? After a nervous time at registration office finally it is registered. Issue was with VIN and body numbers mismatch. On the vin plate it is 12488 On body itself it is 11856 So on US title it was saying 12488 and here is an issue if body numbers dosnt match. It ended up registered as VIN 12488 with note that body number is 11856. Still model year is 1965 which is wrong (taken from title)- it must be 1964. But OK. that I can settle and prove later. Now it has papers and plate. Good.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I am here from your future to warn you about final bodywork and block sanding! For the undercoat removal I like a heat gun and one of those multipurpose oscillatory tools that come with and assortment of tools. Yes. Thank you. It was kind of easy with oscillatory tool and with hammer. Was chipping of nicely.

However I agree that it should match on body and on plate. So there is some mistery behind it. However prior to approve Registration office run a stolen vehicle database check.

And then I went to an engine An o boy. This was not I was hoping fore. Sludge But worse news came out in form of pistons and cylinder walls. Nbr 1 has deep scratxh and as well uneven wear And pistons wote for retirement So engine is scrap since also head is bad on this one. I have plan A B C A: Buy different B18 or B20 since this anyhow is not numbers matching car even vin doesnt match. 😂 easy, not fun and no power. B: Source B230FK turbo engine. Quite easy, enough power, but missing still V8 sound C: source B8444S Volvo/Yamaha V8. Huge job, heap of power, but then I have V8 sound and goose bumps. So on this note happy weekend guys.

I am here to tell you that the V8 is not an easy swap to do well if you wish to keep the factory front crossmember and steering. But you probably know that already.
My initial plans called for keeping the Volvo chassis and grafting Miata front suspension on to the front while converting to V8 power. I went a long way down that path before I realized that it would be easier to do a chassis swap.
No doubt you will do a good job of whatever path you pick. Looking forward to more progress.
And yeah...V8 sound made me do it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You have my full attention. Any particular flavour of V8 engine catch your fancy? It must be Volvo then. B8444S Yamaha. Sorry to copy Caresto 1800GT apart that I want manual gearbox. But I believe Leif will not be against. Biggest concern there will be space between front upper suspension arms and clearance above suspension cross member.

found an explanation of why the body number doesn't match the chassis number here. It also explains why 66/67 models are wrong on lots of cars

If you are willing to replace the front suspension, the V8 swap gets a lot easier. My original plan was not to swap a Miata under the Volvo, so I was building a front suspension from Miata parts. This allowed the engine to sit in the Volvo bay about where it should. At he time I was trying to preserve more "Volvo" DNA This is what I was trying to avoid

Yes. Agree. I really hate that stuff in firewall design. I was thinking of using volvo 240 fron suspension parts. But for that I need to do some measurments.

The 240 front suspension looks like it would solve the issues with engine location.
240 front track is 56" P1800 is 52"
IF you need to keep the wheels and tires under the fender, you wont have much room for wide tires and rims. I ended up with 48 mm offset from a new-Mini.
