Hi folks. My name is Aivis, working for Volvo as local trainer here in Baltic region. Living in Latvia, Riga. Was looking for winter project. Few months back got this old beast. 1972 red partly dismantled 164 with auto gearbox. Was looking for some information and found retrorides and fantastic John's 164R. It took some time to go thru all his topic pages. but very valuable information. Thanks John. Plans. 1. Strip 2. Sandblast 3. Welding 4. Painting in original Alpine blue. 5. Engine and auto rebuild. 6. Remember where all the bits were taken off and put them back. 7. Enyoy. When it arrived it was looking like this.

Car spend the most of its life in Iceland. So in order to register it in Latvia I needed to get it thru customs and thru registration office. After some bunch of my nervs and long waiting hours I got my registration papers. Taking the beast back to garage. Here is the chassie number. Sorry its upside down.

So this is after my few hours demolition. ;D Some rust spotted. Now I can see the photos... Mine was rusty there too but was a simple fix... If you had enough strenght you could always raise the front of the car and remove the engine and gearbox with the front wheels... just like I've done...

Yes I saw that you have been rolling out engine with front axle. Was thinking about the same, but then just got a crane. Will need to shop for some body parts. Mostly concerned about windscreen area repair. Want to order it, but was not clear will the new part from 144 fit the 164? Since in VP Autoparts there is only for 144 model.

Good luck with this, it looks to be a huge job. The 164 looks fantastic in this colour.

Started with the back of the car. After much of spannering and sweat. right side left side Body without rear axle Was almost quite Ok, except of rear left shock top screw. Could not get it out, so used flex to cut. Now to the front Got some troubles with rusted bolts, but after some time So my time went to the end as I promised to my wife went out for nature seeing. So locked garage and went into autumns colours. Counting days when my rotisserie wil arrive (Should be here in the end of the week). And then mount it and to sandblast SPA procedures. ;D

According to some ladds here the 164 is just longer than the 144 most parts are interchangable and yet some of the earlier 240 uses most parts aswell... Try send a PM to Johnrh because he knows a lot of the volvo 164 and the source of some parts...

Will do so. Thanks for suggestion. Yes and I saw he put in windscreen from 240 in his 164. But will ask him to be clear.

Nice work
Your rear wheelarches/fenders look good. Have they been repaired before?
(Check you don't have new metal welded over old rust!)

Bt the way, consider doing an M410 manual and overdrive conversion. The old 3-speed auto is curse word and feels like it wastes 40% of the power and fuel!

It seems that they are originals. As so far I could figure out. Was thinking about M410, but then I need to make travel to Sweden since to find this gearbox in Latvia is no chance. Was also considering to put M41, but will it hold the load? Since its not ment for B30 power.
