Hi there!
My name is Anders. I live in Sweden. I have been into classics since I passed my driving test in 1987.
Past cars include (but are not limited to :-): Fiat 850 Sport, Fiat 127, Fulvia Coupé, Beta Coupé, Alfasud Sprint, Alfetta 1.8, 75 TS and a few French cars: 505 Turbo and Simca Matra Bagheera. I then lived in England for a couple of years and drove a Jaguar XJ6 SIII, never liked it and traded it for a Wolseley SIX (Landcrab), which was a fantastic car that I still miss. I also bought a Triumph TR7 with a tuned V8 which made me realize the dynamic difficulties arising when putting powerful engines in mundane cars… I have four children and wanted a family holiday car so I got us a 1975 Buick Estate Wagon (6 meters, 2.7 metric tons and 455 cubic inches!). My wife hated it so intensely she sold it!
Well that’s history. So:
since 2000 I have been driving a 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Super (Swedish thread Link Here). My wife has been very clear that it is one (1) classic car only, which is the absolute limit. To be honest I’m probably more of a Fiat-man than an Alfa Romeo-man and a few years back I told my wife I was thinking about getting a Fiat 850 Berlina and selling the Giulia. She got very upset that I considered selling “a member of the family” and told me I couldn’t…??!
I suffer from an addiction to car-ads and I’m also equipped with a very trigger-happy ebay-finger. Hiding a car from my wife would be difficult so instead I started hoarding stuff for a car that I did not have (is there a diagnosis for this behavior?). The dream is to create a hot 850 my way. It will not be an Abarth replica even though it will have some resemblance . After a couple of years, I had this stuff:
Then, suddenly, a car too good to be true appeared on “blocket” (Swedish ad-site). A quick phone call, intense negotiations with the wife and I was the proud owner of a 1970 Fiat 850 Special! And I still have the Giulia!
The car was situated some 400 km from home and had it’s last MOT in 1993. A friend and I decided to drive it home last Monday. “What could possibly go wrong?”. Nothing much it turned out! Left rear wheel is not very round and if we exceeded 110 km/h the engine puked oil on the exhaust. We didn't bother to investigate but lowered the speed somewhat.
And some pics of the purchase:
The day after I drove it home I took it for a MOT. It passed!!!
RetroRides is full of people who create wonderful things from piles of rust. My humble plan is to bolt the cool stuff I bought onto this fully working and almost rust free car and drive it like a hooligan fully utilizing it's 47 bhp.
Cheers
