I'm not mechanical but the garage replaced 2 valves, 8 valve springs, 8 retainers, 16 collets, 8 stem seals and a set of followers. Ah. Thats a lot of damage The guy must have been revving the nuts off her. She was in a sorry state when I bought her back but now she's running really sweet.

Great looking car.
Given the engine rebuild, have you thought of fitting some sort of air filters for the carbs?

Great looking car. Given the engine rebuild, have you thought of fitting some sort of air filters for the carbs? No :-) Because: Very little space so trumpets would have to be shortened by a fair bit, reducing torque. Would ruin intake noise, a major part of the appeal of sidedraft carbs. Almost no chance of anything getting sucked in. I have never run filters on my Webers or Del'Ortos and had no issues. However, I would consider running slightly shorter trumpets (10mm shorter)) on a tuned engine like this. They are very close to the inner wing, restricting air flow.

Lovely car with excellent upgrades. Good to see it done properly. Slightly off topic but I owned the Wheeler Dealers 928 (erm..twice!) and loved it. I've pictures somewhere.
Carry on.

That's cool you were able to buy the car back. There's many cars I've sold and wish I could have them back! +1 My immaculate ZR lasted under a year from leaving me to being scrapped. God knows why, as it was a £3k car at the time, heavily OEM+ modified and spotless. 91 Rover GTI I'd walk the 250 miles to get it back off the current owner.

If the current owner of your old GTI is looking after her, that's the main thing. I hate it when the new owners don't care. My Dad's mk1 1300 GT was scrapped shortly after he see sold it. My old 944 Turbo was treasured and maintained. I saw it on eBay 8 or 9 years after I sold it looking lovely.

Haha, some people notice If it were me I'd replace it with a small universal one mounted next to the battery, would make an already tidy engine bay look much better....

My old 944 Turbo was treasured and maintained. I saw it on eBay 8 or 9 years after I sold it looking lovely. Mixed bag I think. The GTI is still with him I think, and wrapped up in a garage barely moving. Which was his plan. A shame, since I put 6k a year on it. The ZR changed hands 3x in about 6 months, and was then dead. God knows how. I drove it hard, 30k a year and maintained it regardless of cost. Never had an issue. Conversely, after uni my first sensible car was s focus estate Tdci. I hated it, put 50k on it in 12-15 months. I chopped it in, about 120-130k on it. FFWD 8 years, and it's still on the road, only gained an owner, gets love each year to pass test and is headed for 200,000 miles. God knows why, was base spec, 1600tdci and I used it as a van until the awful seats crippled me.

Beautiful car, congrats on the buy-back. I did exactly the same beginning of this year - sold my Mustang convertible in 2016 and found I couldn't live without it, so bought it back in January this year

Been using the yellow screamer all week, 250 miles this week. She seems to be running much sweeter, it's been around 1,500 since the engine rebuild.

Fantastic. Great car and I love to see cars being properly used! Cars are much better when used, this was standing for 3 years with the previous owner and developed niggles. The niggles have been fixed through repairs and usage. It seems to be driving better with more use! My aim is to do at least 4,000 miles a year in her.
