I'm really feeling the need for a big cheap cruiser. After looking at TonyCC's/Benzboy's merc's at the weekend I want something low and cool to just cruise about in! Something with a hint of Luxury after having small cars since passing my test. My Choices are: Carlton!! (Preferably 2.0 Diplomat!!) Ford Granada!! Mainly cos I can afford to insure both!! What would you get? There's so much choice even for under a grand!! Alfa Romeo 164, Rover 800, Jags, Bmw 7 Series, Merc 300, Vauxhall Senator etc etc. All of them IMHO have fantastic potential! Think really low, think big bling wheels, think VIP! What would you get? What would your plans be?

I'd go for the the Granny Cheap for parts and go forever a 2.9I engine is reliable Even the 24V cosworth ones come in at that budget There was a 2.9I for sale here with long MOT and TAX for 300 quid that would leave 700 for playing with it I'd have a Granny preferably black on some grey anthracite coloured 16's and get it slammed ;D

Hmm Insurance for me personally wouldn't stretch to a Cosworth but could get a 2.9 12v.
They're same fitment as Mercs ain't they? So a set of Polished Merc 18's would fit? With half of each spring cut off??

Scorpio bugeye ftw.... seen 'em for £250 for an ultima needing a bit of tidying, and they have all th toys. since it's only a sheetmetal upgrade over the granada the parts are just as cheap.

On the Carlton theme how about a Senator? But if you want some real class maybe a Rover Sterling, everything you need and more.

I'm sort looking at this market and really fancy a Scorpio. They are as ugly as curse word but so am I and I get by. Don't look as good in leather though.
BM 5-series is also a contender.

Nice 80's shark-nosed BMW 5 series, should be able to pick a tidy one up and insure it for a grand easy.

Saab 9000, big luxo barge! Turbo ones offer great performance and torque steer ;D....... .........ones on ebay seem to go for decent money, but check out the Auto Trader or local rag for bargain priced Aero and Carlsson models! VIP look 9000 would IMO be a totally sweet and original ride DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus being a ford-a-phile you can go wrong with a Granada, Scorpio or Ultima. The 2.9 24V Cosworth is a auto boxed weapon.

I'm glad somebody suggested the Rover 800 so I didn't have to. They're great! The dashboard is pure '80s Austin Rover. KWALITEE I'd love a down-wheeled and down-badged Vitesse. Kicking 200bhp and nobody would ever know. They all have LSDs so they have none of the torque steer or understeer issues of other high-powered FWD luxobarges.

i had an 800 which rocked. until i sold it, 300% profit later. but why get a FWD luxomotah? an e34 (highly recommended) or a merc would be in my reckoning. or an ancient lexus, you'll find the very odd one although hard to insure i'd think.

Agree with a Saab 9000. But then I would Pick a 2.3 turbo (CSE bit cheaper than Aero models) for 200bhp of front-wheel-drive fun. Mine used to spin the wheels in 3rd at any speed 'til I got some decent tyres. Decent leather luxury, climate control, all the toys. For £600. The only downside with these is the gearboxes.

Current vehicle collection: 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero convertible - in mid-life crisis yellow No new retro as yet ... all attempts to sneak one onto the drive have failed.
