I'm with Eddy, LS400, or an import Celsior. 4.0 V8 RWD, can be slammed to proper VIP style.
Auto with traction.

Another vote for the Senator.
I've just got rid of one that was just over ÂŁ300 with T&T. the only gadget it didn't have was a heated front screen. THat beautiful straight-6. over 200brake and awesome power, no problems. Very simple engines and bits for them are easy and cheap to get hold of.
I miss mine so much, I'm getting another one! (It's only been gone two days!)

depends what you mean by luxobarge.
IMO the Granada, Carlton, etc. are all in a whole different (lower) league to the Mercs, Jags, BMW 7s, Lexus and other random stuf (possibly inc Cadillacs etc.) which are in your price range grandwise.
Sorry to their enthusiasts, and yeah, I can see the potential in them, but Carltons, Rover 800s and Granadas just remind me of Minicabs to be inside.
Want something left field? Seek out a Nissan QX. Should be a weirdly plush J interior in that "I wannabe a yank car" way they had for a time in their luxury stuff, more toys than Hamleys.
Still plenty of later model CROWNs, 300Cs etc which need saving from the banger track too.

Is it going out on a limb too much to suggest one of these?

Cool as a penguins pecker! ;D IMO the Granada, Carlton, etc. are all in a whole different (lower) league to the Mercs, Jags, BMW 7s, Lexus and other random stuf (possibly inc Cadillacs etc.) which are in your price range grandwise.

I don't think that's quite a fair picture overall. There were a lot of these cars in a low spec used as taxis. But how many taxi drivers would make a living if ther were using scorpio V6's or 24v Carlton GSis's None I'd guess. To sit in a top end spec car is massively different. MY Senator had air con, electric everything. digi dash, heated leather, 2 radios (standard), cruise control, wood and leather pretty much everywhere except the floor, trip computer, electronic suspension settings and everything else you would expect of an executive car. All powered by a cracking straight-6 lump with 4-speed auto box with winter and sports modes, producing over 200bhp and returning high 20mpg. OK so it's got a Vaux badge on the boot, but because of that "stigma" it just tries even harder and beats things like the BMW who just rest on their laurels and hide behind what they see as a superior badge. Now Laurels.... There's a thought.

Is the purpose of owning a luxory barge to be comfy or to be driving a prestige vehicle?
If the former, then a Rover 800, Renault 25 or whatever will do nicely. If the later then you needz a Merc, Beemer, etc.
I kinda like Carltons, especially the early ones, but they just are a Vauxhall. A BMW 750iL can be had for not much now and they cost more than most peoples houses did when they were new. And they still feel like class.

What is prestige, a badge? Prestige IMO is worrying too much about what other people think of you.

It's a legacy of class, some cars have a longer line of class than others, the badge itself isn't the tell, the manufacturer's reputation for quality is the indicator.

^^^^ Especially since I'd rate the inside of the new Mondeo to be nicer than the last 3-series BMW I was in... Nah, prestige is the feeling of quality you get from superior fit & finish, especially after 150K miles, slicker design, nicer materials... Its how come you can get in a Chrysler LeBarron loaded with every option under the sun and it feels cheap and tacky compared to a Merc 420SLC where you have to wind the windows yourself....

Just try the door shut test. Get in car, shut door. You'll know when its a quality motor. YM 230k miles W123 280e had the nicest door shut. Nicer than my LS400, nicer than both my scorpios, nicer than my missus' 53 plate A6 SE... Merc for the class. 280 straight six on fruity pipes for the absolute sweet sound. Plus they are doozies to lower.
