So its time i documented my progress on this. Some may remember i used to be a very active member on here, mk2 after mk2, engine swap after engine swap etc etc. I built a vr6 track thing last year from an 89 cl i got cheap with bits from my own rotten mk3, which i failed to put on here. Anyway that went due to getting a house and I'm back with mk2 number 17! So earlier this year when I'd just sold my bora v6 4motion and wasn't even looking, this came up local. I couldn't help myself! It had a few issues that didn't scare me, the lack of brakes and seriously dead gear linkages. So a new mk3 16v mc and linkage kit fitted it drove much better. I should add that since i bought it months ago and the following stuff has been done... I've still only driven it a handful of times LOL So it pretty much lives in the garage and occasionally comes out for pics! I wanted rid of that jetta front so put a single lamp on as it came with the car Next thing i tackled was the twisted passenger seat and the usual ruined drivers seat bolsters So a bit of messing about with donor seats left me with a mint set of as new seats. I'd never done this before so was fully pleased with my efforts! Then i went to Lanzarote, got drunk by the pool and did an eBay buy. Turned out I hated them, so moved them on and lost money. Oh well. My next buy was the correct front end for it, much better. Then i bought a momo race wheel. Fits in well i think. Then I changed the rear lights Then recently it got serious. My missus bought a mk5, so her high mile mk4 1.8t had to go... in bits. I stripped it and in return i get to keep all the stuff i want. Winner! So thats where I'm up to, her car is pretty well stripped now and she's happy with what she's made back so far so it's all good. We've had the car 18months now and bar a maf failure its never let us down. Its had cambelt etc, clutch/flywheel so its pretty well ready for a new home, this weekends mission is to get the engine/loom out and get the shell gone so i can move back onto the mk2. Enjoy

Its only an arz with a ko3 but i know it and its reliable. I'll consider a change in the future but I expect it'll be lively enough to start with!

Ah cool, will be drive by wire then. Are you going to use the mk4 loom and ecu?
You probably know this but you can swap to the ko3s with no other real changes.
It should be fairly quick even standard though, I haven't driven mine yet so can't confirm it lol.
My vrs is remapped with the standard ko3s and it's quicker than my old mk5 gti.

Yea I'll be converting to dbw, I've already lined up a load of parts from a B4 passat 2.0... pedal box with all clutch hydraulics, gearbox with 100mm cups, gear linkages, short front mount, and 16v hubs for 200quid!
If a ko3s comes up cheap before it goes in I'll swap it, if not this engine is getting a clean up and pipework simplification to be used as it is. I had it remapped for her last year and it was lively enough, can't wait to drive it in the mk2!

So today was finish stripping the mk4 day. I'm sick of the sight of it and its trapping the mk2 in the garage. So at the crack of dawn i was looking at this After a load of messing about and feeling sorry for myself with man flu i was ready to relieve it of its goods Then another truly delightful job, removal of the rats nest After pilfering the 7-8L of juice i could get out of it, thats it, ready for the scrap man

Some stuff happened. Picked up a haul of conversion parts for a good price; B3 passat 02a gearbox Clutch hydraulics Pedal box Short front engine mount 02a shifter cables 16v/g60 hubs Then out came the old 8v, I did pressure wash the engine bay after this, needs quite a bit of tlc. I also gave the 02a gearbox a clean up. This gearbox allows me to keep my driveshafts and use a hydraulic clutch. Its off a 2.0 petrol passat, no idea what the ratios will be like so we'll see.

Well its not as good as I've had in the past. The chassis legs although not rotten they are starting to get eaten by the brown so they need wire wheel/kurust action. I know one of the rear arches is dead and taken the inner with it, and there are some dodgy looking but solid previous repairs I'd like to sort out in the future. Had it not been BBM I honestly don't think I'd go much further with this shell. The mot is up in march so hopefully i can get the 1.8t running and any niggles ironed out before then so I don't have to rush about bodging bodywork to get a ticket on it

Time for an update (and if my laptop allows) larger pictures so you don't have to click on them to enlarge. So after I lost mojo some came back and I have done stuff. Here's my SAI blanking plate fitted All the loom came out along with other stuff, engine got dumped in the gap Got some wood Found I had a cracked manifold, luckily a nice chap locally gave me one for free! Fitted the 02A gearbox, found the casting for the bottom bolt shorter, me wanting to use my xmas gift wound the original bolt (which was far too long) into the brittle cast ally sump with an impact gun... thus the engine oil started pouring out. Poo. Job for another day. Fitted my freebie manifold, can't put the turbo on yet, due to the crack the gasket is ruined so I need a new one. With my engine now a bit ruined due to my stupidity, I turned my attentions back to the car. Subframe dropped and out the way for a refurb of its on. Left me with this brown mess Areas of concern... Holes welded up from where some not so bright spark self tappered a car alarm here. Moron. Offending battery tray replacement Was an appalling fit.. cheers vwheritage. Had to seam it round the inner wing. You may or may not notice my brown chassis legs are not brown anymore. Oh no. I got busy with the wire wheel and kurust. First time I've used it, but many restorers are using it so it must be good right? Anyways I found Ace Ventura was a previous owner. Took the dash out and was greeted by MANY bird seeds. wierd. Today I went shopping for some unobtanium. Honestly, everywhere round here than sells them we're out of stock! Luckily homebase had one To do said small repairs Which completes engine bay welding I had a bit of daylight left over today so I found my passat pedal box and decided to do the neccessary to make it work for those who don't know, the U shaped bracket at the top needs to be moved to the left about an inch, so you can see i cut the top off to access the factory welds, moved the bracket then welded the top back on. I also welded on a bracket for the dbw throttle pedal. I'll not bolt this on till I've tried it in the car to finalise position. So I'm up to date now. Please read this as its just taken me a whole 30 mins to upload these damn pictures LOL

Well well well, I've had a busy weekend! What with it being the WORST time of year for car time, and having my daughter every other weekend I only get chane every 2 weeks to do anything, but when I do, I hit it HARD So where was I? No idea so I'll get on with this weekends shenanigans. I picked up these early mk3 lucas 280s for free, but one had a snapped seized bleed nipple. Not a problem with a welded on nut and some fire! I win! If you've read the previous page you'll see I was debating on what colour to paint the bay, well I chose the cheapskate option and I'm glad I did, as expected, the cold garage and plenty of winterness in the air resulted in a far from perfect paint job, so I'm glad I didn't spend a wad on BBM paint. However I'm not going to cry about it, at least its now minus holes and flaking rust. I prefer functionality over show queen looks anyway. With that "drying" overnight last night today I had chance to do a few things I wanted to get done today. One being finalising the position of the dbw pedal, which I'd welded my bracket on waaaay too far back towards the bulkhead. Not a problem, chop it off and move it. It looks about right in the car so we'll see how it goes. The beauty of a removable pedal is that if its not right, I can always chop the "leg" of it and weld it wherever I want, I can't see it being far out if its not right. So after in and out about 20 million times here's my finished pedal box... Also on my hit list was to get some stuff off my garage floor and onto the car... as you can see. Unless you're blind. In which case I'm not sure forums are for you. You may or may not notice the coolant bottle is on the other side, so I can use the mk4 hoses. I also got the steering column back on and sorted the interior wiring out. What I mean by that is removing one of my pet hates! Thats a 90s immobiliser/alarm. I knew when I bought the car this would be coming out, in my experience they cause more problems than they prevent. glad thats out, much tidier in the car now, although I didn't take a pic. You know what spaghetti looks like I'm sure. I've bought a second hand Qpeng downpipe off ebay, so my wallets is stinging slightly, but I get paid on Friday, meaning I can buy a whole load of new parts to get the curse word back on its wheels

I feel your pain... wish I didn't have to sell my mk2vr!
I can't wait to get this done... but it's costing a fortune! All my previous conversions we're done cheaply. I suppose its a price to pay for potential big power and reasonable economy (yes i dare dig at vr6s LOL)

Hope the cars loom wasn't too badly hacked by the aftermarket kit.
