following this in silent admiration in terms of the "chassis" what is usually across the front of the engine bay, is it just a skeleton for the headlights and radiator to fix to or something more substantial, structural bumper iron, bolt in cross member ?

There are 2 crossmembers, with rubber bushes each side as the engine mounts to them at the front middle. Then a non structural skeleton piece that the radiator/grille/lights mount to. As for the aftermarket stuff, it only really tapped into the main power wire to the ignition and the starter exciter wire.
I've just done some pretty big buys so this weekend will see it back on the ground rolling and hopefully the engine will go in

Well I suppose I best do another big update. So I spent many pounds on a Qpeng conversion downpipe and all the front end consumables And proceeded to build the front subframe up with new bits. I did intend to have a lot of parts blasted and coated, but to cut a long story short I've got a court fight coming up so had to scrimp on that unfortunately. So forgive the brown bits Then I found this... Wasn't massively impressed and still trying to find out what the ebay seller is going to do about it! Undeterred, I continued building. This is my rather cunning improvisation instead of buying a scene taxed fluid resevoir with clutch take off And so the subframe went home and the shifter box/cables went on Then came the fun bit... I got to use the load leveller I'd just bought! Made a solid short front mount Aaaaaaand she's officially a 1.8t :-) Again forgive the brown crossmembers, can't be helped at present. For those doing this swap, this is the belt you want for A/C deletion Spun the metal boost pipe 180 and found some pipes to fit, I'll chop off the end when I've got a FMIC kit to fit Plumbed up as many pipes and stuff as I can, and this is where I'm at Next job, is to deal with all this...

Been a while since i updated this, mainly because since February this year i lost mojo. But it is back (after a decent summer and wasted sunlight hours), I’ve been spending like a new millionaire (which I most certainly am not) and she’s now a runner. I’ve gathered photobucket has decided not to help keeping forums like this alive so wheres best/easiest to host pics now?
Expect regular updates again...

Ok so I got with the times and bought a tablet so I can update this easier and see all the lovely threads without squinting! So where was I? Oh yea, I abandoned the car for most of this year, due to mojo loss and mainly being scared of this.. And this But I got over it and tbh I've no idea what I was worried about, as later on I found it only takes about 5 wires joined to get it to run, then the rest is just making gauges and stuff work. Some of these pics aren't in order and might not make sense as this was all over the course of 2017 but most was later in the summer due to me forgetting I had the golf.. Laying out the mk2s now separate ancillary wiring Poked through the passenger side of the bulkhead ready to be joined with the mk2 fuse box loom Started fitting corrado vr6 radiator and boost pipes/intercooler Cut the slam panel, which I would later regret... This is much later on, but you can see the bumper although trimmed, was still bowed and the cooler wasn't central. Which bugged me to the point of a serious rethink later on... anyway in other workings... My Passat hubs received new bearings and were thrown on Along with freshly resealed vr6 calipers and 280mm discs Which caused me another headache, in that I had to take a grinder to the calipers and remove the "outer" stick on weights just to get the wheels to turn. This upset me greatly but I left it for another day (Which was yesterday, a mere 10 months later) I may or may not have mentioned before that when fitting the Passat gearbox, I broke the sump. Well I'd bought a new one last new year, so set about changing it. Only for one of them stupid bolts tucked up by the flywheel to snap my ball ended Allen key. I did later get around this by cutting down a little 10mm socket While I was there I discovered some curse word on the oil pickup, which is a known turbo killer on 20vts, so I thought idiotic not to clean this Then I got distracted by buying an R32 in a tuxedo Which as well as having the engine taken out at a specialist for timing chains and relieving me of £1500 I thought I'd save money by fixing the broken flexis myself. Which was a massive ballache, but gave me an opportunity to release some more sexy noises. So, one broken set of floppy downpipes out New flexis on Now you'll see 2 silencers after the cats. The R32 doesn't have these, so removal makes the A3 sound exactly the same as the R32. Which is good. Very good. So they had to go Then I got really bored with dragging a gas bottle behind my welder. So as I was about to take this rather wobbly useless galved shelving monstrosity to the tip, I thought hang on.... So ground off some bits, tacked it up to make it sturdier, welder on £15 of BnQs finest castors and ended up with this. I was fully pleased until I was informed you can buy a proper welding trolley off eBay for £25! Oh well I saved a shelf. Anyway the golf... I revisited the cooler position. Now central, neater, and more discreet, plus the bumper sits better. So by now it was together, running, moving by itself. Just tidying up to do really. So I bought one of these Which made my rev counter work, and also allowed me to finish tidying up inside...

Now because I got late at taking pictures, here's one of the interior all back together, albeit dusty. My new nardi wheel, voltmeter, oil and boost gauges in too and all working. So at this point it's all working, just fettling to do now, so I did some comparison pics of late 2016 to late 2017 And to yesterday. It was time to address the lack of front brake room so I bought some period 90s TSW EVO R 16s which fit perfectly. Not sure if they're to stay but they'll do for now. Couldn't get a good pic as the garage is blocked by 2 cars and a van so here's a sneaky side door shot

Loving all the work, had a good look at a very similar Audi myself, very much a wolf in sheeps clothing but it had very nearly dead DSG so i left it alone.
Can't beat a good set of 90's wheels

Mines a dsg, and i bloody love it. I have driven the golf just down the road, and i think its safe to say that even with 200bhp the golf would very much embarrass my A3.
I’ve just realised i forgot to add a pic of my expensive but perfect fitting trackslag 2.5” exhaust system. I’ll leave that for my next update but it sounds awesome

I know its been a while... I’ve not forgotten about it, I just don’t have inclination to work in arctic conditions! I decided to take the outside back to standard, so the stripes are going, and yesterday I braved the weather and went to see edk83 and his allegro to relieve him of the bbs RAs he’s not using... so the golf is starting to remember who it is and start acting its age (28 year old!)

Just read this from start to finish. Love the work thats gone into it. And it certainly looks far better with the proper front end on there.
Should be nice and lively now with the 20vt in there.
I had a octavia vrs sometime ago with a bbt250 turbo on and it was a great motor.

I did consider it but my weekends are usually tied up, one reason why this thing isn’t finished! It does now run though, i drove it down the road last year and it was scary haha

I think you mentioned you had a bora v6 4motion. Always liked the mkiv golf of these. Had a memorable drive in a friend's about 10 years ago in fact.
Are the engines tuneable? Can you do anything with the haldex?
If I could get 35mpg out of one (on the M4 run) might even work financially!
