Well not long had the Lada 2101 gone, when I found a Fiat 124 saloon on ebay. The plan being as per the usual - put it on a watchlist, but definitely don't bid on it. I think we all have watch lists like that, and in most cases we don't actually bid, but on that 1 in 10 time, we actually buy something, something we don't need or have space for, but we buy it anyway. So in went a bid and I kind of forgot about it. I knew I had bid, but only held the bid at £20 more than the last bidder, so someone HAD to bid higher. I held onto that thought until I got an email from ebay came in congratulating me on my purchase - curse word! Oh well, best make plans to collect the car, and that's when I see its in Uckfield, not far from the English channel, and I'm in Newcastle, not far from the Scottish border, again - curse word! So plans to travel down and pay for the car went out of the window, it would have cost too much money with trains etc, so I sent the full £1470 via Paypal to the seller, and then booked a recovery guy through Shiply. Plans were sorted between the seller and recovery guy for the car to be picked up this Thursday morning, and at 10am Yesterday, I get the phone call from the seller - the car has been picked up. Now I had to play the waiting game, as its about 300 miles up to mine, so even at 60mph its going to be a long 5 hour trip. I get a call from the recovery guy and he says 5pm, but he'll ring me half an hour before he gets there, so I go about my usual daily routine of fixing bogs, replacing taps, and servicing boilers... at 4pm I get a call, "I'm at the unit, where are you" drop everything, drive to the unit, unload the fiat, and then I notice it - the ebay listing clearly didn't show the rust, and it has plenty of it. The entire underneath has been covered in waxoyl which has helped in places, but trapped water in many other areas I pay the recovery guy, wheel the car into its temporary storage, lock the unit up, and prepare to raid the bank account for the much metalwork this is going to need. I may have cried a little bit after this So tomorrow I will be uploading pictures. Prepare to be shocked. For now, have a couple of pictures from the listing... very cool interior

Man I know these fiat from this era. Build and steel quality sucks. I'm afraid for horrible sights of holes with some rust attached to it. Fingers crossed and butts clenched. Bookmarked ( of course)

I sense things may not be straight forward but everything you have to do will be more than worth it in the end!
This looks great and I cannot wait to see how it all goes...

Woke up this morning feeling happy its a weekend, with nothing to worry about - then I remembered buying this Fiat So the decision was taken to have a drive up to the unit and have a good look around the car. First problem was that the bonnet cable had snapped and some bright spark (me) had closed the bonnet before seeing if the handle actually worked. A bit of jiggery pokery and the bonnet now opens, which has its down side, as you can now see the rust This just left the small matter of having a look at the bodywork, which from the fourth picture you'll see didn't go too well after I pressed a rust bubble on the wing with my finger One thing that got me was the description of the "being in storage from 5 years old". Going by the different colours of paint, the British Leyland mudflaps, and the filler and bodges, I suspect this has either been a farm hack, or simply hasn't been in storage since 1976. Even for a 1970s Fiat its too bodged up to have been taken off the road at such a young age. The underside of the car has also seen a few thousand gallons of waxoyl, which in some places has helped but flaked off, but in the most part its lead to water being trapped, with some areas still wet Anyway, have some pictures to delight and shock in equal measure

If it's been in a barn since 1976 the tyres should reflect that. That must have been something of a shock.

The Tax was due on the 29/3/90. I see that its not even a twin cam model, this will be some serious labour of love bringing this very boggo spec Fiat back to life.

If you sold the Lada due to the work needed, this Fiat really isn't going to help things. The fact that even the wheels are dissolving doesn't help either.

Looks to me like it was stored on the local pier for 20 years.

Selling a car then replacing it almost immediately with something almost identical is winning at old cars.

Aye I've just seen that Looking more likely that it won't be completely standard though I guess I'd better say - after selling the Lada I realised I did need the car in my life, but the buyer wasn't going to sell it back to me, so when this car came up for sale I knew I had to chuck a bid in. The plus points are that the interior feels "plush" compared with the Lada, with extra padding in the seats, more chrome, and better quality fittings. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Lada, but it definitely had a lower quality "commie" feel to it compared to the 124. So while its in much worse condition, at least its going to feel a bit more like an Italian car should Its just a shame it has the American style rear lights, rather than the slim ones of the Lada/early 124 Fiat 124... Lada 2101...

Little bit of a surprise tonight, while taking out the snapped spark plug (seller didn't tell me that) - It seems the 1197cc engine is actually a 1438cc from the 124 Special Plus the car has electronic ignition by Boyer Bransden. So its had a few bits done to it in it's life

Well, there's always an upside Personally, I'd have it back on the transporter to the previous liar, I mean owner, and be asking for some money back! But that's mainly because that level of rust would have me running for the hills

But that's mainly because that level of rust would have me running for the hills Think the thing that got me the most was the "put into storage at 5 years old" was actually "used for 19 years, bodged together, and then put into storage while covered in rust" And when I say bodged, I mean - filler, chicken wire, old newspapers, and what looks like "no more nails". Oh, and the fuel pipes are missing, as are the ignition barrel and steering cover.

Whats the repair/replacement panel situation with these?? At least it's not all swoopy which is harder to repair. And seeing as the holes for the Fiat lights are bigger looking than the Lada ones why not get a set and fit them. Best of luck!
