At least you've still got the original British Leyland mudflaps.
I would cut my losses - you would have to almost build a complete new car and the time and $$$s would be extreme. Can't you - as others have suggested - get some kind of reverse through ebay as a result of blatant misrepresentation by the seller? Or failing that maybe part out and sell the bits that are still useable?

Certainly looks to have enough fibreglass in it to make a small boat but i'd love to see it rescued.
Is the 1438 OHV or a twin cam?

No going back guys, the car is going to be done. I've put off too many projects in the past, and ended up selling some great cars, and that stops now! I've bought a NOS drives sill off ebay, and a couple of wings are about to be bought from a guy in (I think) Bulgaria. The rest of the parts are going to have to be sourced from Italian ebay, or from the Lada guys. With regard to the welding, I'm thinking of going on a local welding course, then attempt to fix it myself. When that idea goes wrong, I'll get a local welder to do it I do wish the car was the 1438cc twin cam, but its the 1438cc OHV, that's 69bhp though, so not bad

Great news, there are not enough of these around ! Shames it's not the twin cam but it will still be fairly sprightly.
I wonder if Spain is a decent source for parts with the Seat 124 and 1430?

it doesnt look that bad to me, it probably only needs another fiat 124 swapping onto the engine and it should be golden.

This was the description from the auction - "1971 FIAT 124 Saloon. Finished in her original baby blue paintwork and unmarked black vinyl interior. One of only 2 left from 1971, this has had 2 owners from the same family and last changed hands in October 1976. It has been stored since then and is now in need of restoration. Being sold as a non runner for spares or repairs. Old style V5 and keys are present". The paintwork under the rattle can paint is indeed original, but the filler isn't (unless Fiat bodged their cars, which is definitely possible ) The interior is unmarked, apart from the layers of grime and mold. Stored since 1976, yeah sure! Only truth is - being sold for spare or repairs (definitely a spares car! ) And yes it has keys, but a lack of an ignition barrel/lock/wiring etc should have been in the description. Anyway, can't complain really, as I should have viewed it first, was just too far away for that

I'm kind of hoping that when you scrape all the black curse off it actually looks better than it does now, somehow. Get a better look at the enemy and all that.

Well me and my Dad took a couple of scrapers to the black stuff around the wheel arches, and its left a few little and not so little holes around the bodywork. We haven't attacked the underside of the car yet, but going by the rest of the body, I'm expecting it'll look like Swiss cheese once we're done In separate news - I went to a place called "The Range" which is a sort of poor Mans B&Q meets Poundstretchers. I was quite literally amazed by all the different bits and bobs that they sell. Bulbs, cables, wire, fuses, switches, etc. It felt like Halfords use to be back in the day. While browsing all this stuff, I found a universal ignition switch with 2 keys for £9.99. So this weekend I'm going to fit it to the 124, chuck on a battery, and see if any of the electrics work

Maybe you need to consider bringing in a Lada from Europe. I know plenty of cars are shipped out of the UK to places like Poland so, maybe, getting one of those people to bring one back on their empty trailer/low loader wouldn't be such a stupid suggestion. A reshell has got to be the way forwards even if its not 'kosher' I'm wondering how much solid metal there is to weld the purchased panels to. Not the kind of car to cut your welding teeth on IMHO. Best of luck tho.

Both the Fiat and our VW Camper in the same shot. The 124 looking almost presentable (from a distance)

To be fair I read that as, at some point after the last change of owner it was put into storage, not that it was put into storage in 1976

Work on it came to a halt until I knew what panels I could get for it. Don't want to chop bits out and then find I can't replace them

Well curse word is so bad that I should be ashamed of the language I use about it, so cut the affected areas out and see what is left. If you can't find it, you will have to make it. There's no point in leaving cancerous steel in a restored car, because you can't get the panels. What do you think the lads on here restoring RA28 Celica's etc do? Plus, trimming it back to decent steel and coating with Electrox or similar, ready to be repaired, will let you see where you truly stand and do wonders for the old mojo. Depends on when you plan to have it on the road? Chop chop! (LOL at the swear filter on here. :/)
