Another couple of hours put in before work. Bit tacked in And fully welded And ground back I’ve not welded the side where the well is as I need to replace the doily in there Cut out and a bit made And tacked in I’ll weld it fully next time. I’ve also bought these. I only needed the last couple of foot of the driver side, but someone on FB offered me these for £175 delivered where they are £220 each new without the spring hangers. I’ll only use what I need and keep the rest for when I rebuild it next time 😁

The work on the escort is very satisfying to see, have you got any events planned yet?

The work on the escort is very satisfying to see, have you got any events planned yet? Thanks Jim. I’ve not really got a target to aim for. If I can do a couple of events a year, I’ll be happy. Pembrey is one I want to do as it’s my local event.

I had an unexpected day off today as I didn’t get home from work until 4am this morning. I was awake by 9am so I went out the garage to do a bit. Yesterday’s bit welded in The top section and bottom section was ok to weld, but the to vertical bits in the well were a complete pain in butt. I had to weld them left handed with my arm over the rear panel, whilst looking through the aperture for the rear light. I’ll be honest, it was a right mess. Many holes blown and welds in places that I didn’t want welds. After a session it’s the power file I can tidy that up with a skim of filler. What am I talking about, it’s in the boot of a scabby old rally car. And that was it. I went for an unexpected pub lunch.

Not a lot done today. Ground some welds down in the boot and filled in a couple of holes in the boot floor. Holes ground bigger with die grinder Then bits welded in And ground back These were a real pain to do as they were right at the back of the boot. My back was aching leaning in. I also wanted to seam weld the wheel tubs to the boot floor here. So to make it easier I dropped the ramp to the floor, wedged some wood under the back of the shell as my amble figure was causing the shell to tip up, and then climbed into the boot to weld.

As usual, another couple of hours put in before work today (usual until the weather gets so miserable that I won’t want to walk across to the garage. It was a chore today). Random rust hole in the middle of the rear quarter panel Rot cut out and a bit tacked in. I used the cut and but method which is a lot quicker and easier. And welded (no photo) and ground back And there you have a nice 1.5” flat square steel bit in the middle of the most bent and damaged panel known to man. I’ll save a bit on filler there. Next I turned my attention to the drivers front screen pillar. This looks ominous The gutter is riveted to the pillar here with a bit of braze at the very bottom. Gutter removed A bit of death wheel action reveals A bit cut out (no photo) and a bit tacked in Fully welded And ground back And the gutter itself Grot cut off and a bit welded on. I welded it to my vice to make it easier After the welding it was a bit (a lot) distorted The outer edge had aslo curved more than the shape of the roof pillar (no photo). A bit of action in the shrinker/ stretcher had it sorted. I drilled the rivet holes and a spot weld hole for the bottom and a bit of weld through primer later and it ready to weld on next time

These turned up today. Yay. Nice and solid, but they are either Mk 1.5 or Mk2 items as they have the wider front spring hanger. No issue as I’m not using this bits anyway. But I won’t get a chance to fit the driver side 1/2 rail this weekend as I’ve got a wedding to go to. 😩

Last week I had a wedding party to attend in the big city (Cardiff), so no work got done. I went out with work last night to the not so big city (Swansea), but still got a bit done today. There was a hole in the chassis here so I made it bigger And tacked in a non-hole Welded it up and ground it off So onto the main rot in the chassis leg. I drilled through all the spot welds And removed the rotten section One complete replacement leg The old plate that welds to the rear valance was manky So that got cut off and a new one made Section of chassis to be fitted cut roughly to length, cleaned up and rust treatment on the surface rust And boot floor cleaned up and derusted I have coated everything in weld through primer ready to weld on tomorrow, if I’m up to it as I’m going out for a curry with the boys tonight. What a social life aye? I also finished the roof gutter from a few weeks ago. Welded and riveted on And ground off Maybe more tomorrow

After curry and only a few pints, I was fit and well to do some work this morning. My mother visited which stopped an early start so after she left I quickly went to the garage. Welding mask on, and my Father in-law turns up, so back in the house I go for another cup of tea and a chat. With all pleasantries out of the way it was garage time again. Chassis endplate holes drilled and welded on Ground back and primed Chassis rail was then trimmed to length and offered up Then I cranked up the amps on the mig to make sure there was good penetration and welded it on As the original spot welds that I drilled out were quite large, the holes left were also quite large. Filling these has not given such a nice finish as I’d like, but it’s done now. Nothing I can do about it. The bumper strengthener also got welded back on and all welds ground back There’s a bit of grinding left to do where the plug welds have penetrated through the chassis rail, these will get knocked back next time.

It’s all good stuff dude. You must be getting towards the end of it now? Thanks Teaboy. It’s getting there now - rust wise on the body. I’ve got the bump stop to inspect on this side and there is a hole right at the end of the chassis on the other side. Oh and also the other side gutter to inspect. Panel wise the bonnet is good, passenger door has only a couple of small bits to sort, bootlid needs the frame sorting at rear but have been offered a good one. The driver door is shot. The spare I have is not much better and new ones are £680 + vat so that isn’t happening. I also need to sort the gaps. It’s enough to keep us entertained for a while

I took the day off work today. It’s my birthday so stuff work. After mowing the lawns in the rain I spent a few hours in the garage. Passenger rear chassis. A hole and the end plate has dissolved. The end plate is jammed between the chassis rail and the rear valance. So I cut a section of the valance out revealing the manky end plate. Cut the end plate off and cut out the grot from the chassis A bit got welded in And ground back A new end plate was made and welded on Then ground back and primed Valance got welded back on And ground off The end plate also got welded to the valance but no photos of that. I then spent a bit of time remounting the front panels and passenger door So I can work out a way of sorting this lack of gap I came back into the house and mrs Jonsey had made Welsh cakes. Better than any birthday cake. I'm going out for a steak and a couple of pints now.
