Die grinders really need a generous oiling before every use, and during too if it’s a big job. I admit Glen that I’ve never oiled it before, but it’s not hat a lot of use either. When it slowed I put a little oil from my Myford lathe in it and then it went worse. It spins free if I turn it by hand, but with the air on its useless

Try something really thin like white spirit or paraffin.
I have been using air tools for decades, and die grinders are the one thing that seem to not last at all.

So this morning I gave the pillar another going over with the belt sander to get as much surface rust off as possible and then another coat of rust converter just to make sure. It then got a coat of weld through and the repair welded on. I plug welded the the repair where the door seal goes first, but when I was welding the other side I heard a couple of the plug welds twang loose. I did clean the weld through off at each hole but I think the rust converter may have caused isues. So I did some seam welding to the edge of the pillar - inch weld - inch gap. As this looks like it’s going to be a complete resprayed I may take the chance to do this to all the apertures. As we’ve got more guests in the shepherd’s hut tonight and tomorrow I wanted to get as much of the grinding done as possible before their arrival. I can then make repairs and weld them in without annoying them. This was first on the list. Some grinder action gave this This was a chunky patch that someone had snobbed on years ago and that I choose to ignore back in 2007 This bubble on the strut top Was luckily just a bit of surface rust under the filler and not anything that needs cutting out This bit needs further investigation where the inner wing meets the bulkhead. I may need to take the wing off😩 More tomorrow with a bit of luck. Oh, I almost forgot. I think I’ve given myself arc eye in my left eyeball. I started to weld at one point with my grinding mask on and not my welding mask. What a 🛎 end.

I made a start poking around the grot on the passenger side bulkhead. So first bonnet off Then it’s face Then out with the drill And off with the wing Revealing this A bit of cutting Repair to the inner door pillar Then the outer pillar Then the A panel A bit more cutting Made a repair piece And snobbed it on Made a new flange for the top of the A panel and tacked it on. Fitted the wing and the wing rail panel but the repair isn’t high enough leaving a gap. I’ve ordered a new wing rail section so I’ll remake this when I now high it’s got to be.

I took the other wing off. There are some holes but it’s nowhere near as bad as the other side. There are a few holes, but as a bonus it is original Ford tin so I’ll leave it as is for now so I can use it as reference for rebuilding the other side. It’s looking less and less like a car every time I go in the garage.

Glad you enjoyed it. I got taken to see it today* and enjoyed it very much. A good nod to the original I thought.
*Although more because Sarah wanted to see it, I’d probably have picked “Lightyear” 🤣🤣

It was full of cheese but I enjoyed it. The cinema was full where it’s normally empty. That could be more because fathers day than Oscar nominations.

Quality repairs there, that should help with the shell stiffness....I'm surprised you still have the steering lock fitted though

Quality repairs there, that should help with the shell stiffness....I'm surprised you still have the steering lock fitted though Thanks General. I’m no expert. In fact some of the grot I’m cutting out is of my own making, but that’s just between you and me😉. I’ve used 1.2mm steel for these bits so hopefully they last a bit longer and add a bit more strength around the roll cage feet. The steering lock is long gone. It’s just the ignition barrel now. Although the ignition switch on the back of it does need replacing as it doesn’t spring off when cranking. I’ll sort it one day.

Remember the wing rail end that didn’t fit? I made my own Mines on the left. Not as shiny, but it fits. Welded on And ground off Removed some grot from the wing rail too Next I attacked the driver door pillar as I’d left the flange on when I repaired it back in the day for some reason. Now it’s grotty Weld through primer didn’t help much And a pic of the wing back on but only a few screws holding it that I forgot to add

I had a day off work today. Yay. Because I’m working on Saturday. Boo. Anyway, back to the driver door pillar. Made a panel. Welded it on Ground it off and seam welded it for good measure As I was finishing this, a delivery man turned up with my new FIA seat mounts. I’ve been dreading doing the seat mounts. Seats seem to be getting wider and wider. An Escort is quite a narrow car. My brother had bought some OMP seats for his Gilbert so I’ve borrowed one to try. A guy I know paints Escorts for quite a well known rally car manufacturer. He had a Mk2 there so I copied his seat mounts positions on the way home from work a few weeks ago. After a lot of measuring and cutting, I have this Just tacked in for now. So I sat the seat on the mounts. It’s quite tight to the tunnel but it’s ok. The shoulder clears the door. Just. But there is a problem. I’m sitting too high. My head with a helmet on needs to sit below the roll cage and at the moment it’s not. The aluminum side mounts of the seat can be reconfigured to allow the seat to move over towards the tunnel which might allow the shoulder of the seat to move away from the door so the seat can go lower. If not a different seat will need to be found. The shoulder width on this seat is 620mm. The old Sparco Sprint seat is only 515mm. But they don’t make these anymore. Narrower seats are available but I need a seat with a wide base to fit my chunky butt in. I’ll try and adjust the mounts tomorrow and get more room.
