Cheers Adey. The jet is now clear and I've put it back in and engine is running again. I'm on call this evening so haven't chanced going for a drive in case it breaks down again. The break defiantly need bleeding again but there defo bedded in now as my Mrs towed me home with them on all the way. What a rollercoaster ride😃. I'm tempted to get an R12 carb and inlet on as there a twin choke, but I doubt there is many about i think there are a few 12 carbs too choose from, I'm sure mines a zenith? unsure if its twin choke though? i may have a coupe of spare r12 solex carbs requiring refurb in a box. ill take a look for you . That would be cool, cheers. I think mine is a solex 32PDIS. I can get a rebuild kit for it, bit the butterfly shaft is excessively worn and I don't know if that is repairable.

Yep. It's only a piddly little engine as standard so every mm counts. Luckily as it's a LHD the engine will lean to the passenger side so won't interfere with the controls, but I want to keep as much floor space on that side as possible as it will poke through

Is it the shaft that it is worn or the carb body where the shaft fits that is worn - carbs can line drilled and sleeves / bushes inserted and I have no doubt that a shaft could be easily made up to pattern - The Carburettor Hospital keeps no end of parts stock for all makes / types : carburettorspecialists.com/

A strip down is in order. If I wiggle the shaft there is about 2mm play. Thanks for the link. As it happens I went through the list of carbs they stick last night whilst researching solex spares. They don't stock a carb but they might stock the parts. I'll contact them once I've stripped the carb.

I wouldn't bother restoring an old Solex, I don't know this specific type, but generally they're not the greatest carbs. Sure there is a Weber that fits (34ICH?) or can be made to fit, or otherwise something Japanese like Keihin. Ask Fast Road Cars in Wales for advice on Webers, he also caters for slow road cars.

I had thought about fitting a 1300 x flow carb. Well see

I’ve got a 34ICH off a Land-Rover that you’d be welcome to if you think it’s worth a try.

If a 34ICH fits the studs, I think he needs one with a 25mm venturi for such a small displacement engine. They come in three venturi sizes (25, 27, 29mm), LR use the largest.

I did a bit of research on the Estafette FB group this morning and apparently there is a company that rebuilds the carbs for £120 called The Carb Exchange (or something like that) so I may give them a call. Apparently lead time is about 6 weeks though which isn't much good.

On Friday I went to see a guy who has taken over a local garage that had gone bust. Lots of junk had been left up in the attic and amongst it all were these. £30 exchanged hands and they were mine. I've placed them with plenty of space in front as the front seats are a lot higher as it's a cab over arrangement and the kids would just have been staring straight into the back of the seats. My brother and I also made a start on knocking some dents out and filling the arches but as soon as we put the filler on it started raining so that was that. Instead we decided to go for a quick drive to see if we could go any further than a mile without breaking down. In summary we could not. The 7yr old jumped in one of the newly fitted seats, I jumped in the drivers seat and my brother jumped in his Land Rover. The van went well for about a mile even reaching speeds of upto 35mph. Then after about a mile the engine started chugging and stopped. On with the tow rope and back to base we went. The float bowl had a little bit of curse word in it again but not a lot of petrol. I decided to investigate further and found that the fine filter into the carb was blocked solid with rusty mud. Cleaned it all out as I hadn't checked this the last time. I will give it another go one evening this week. The boy enjoyed the ride though.

I had a bit of time to kill before work so I changed the front passenger seat. Out with the Bet Lynch special (God knows what it's out of) And in with a very good second hand Estafette item. I'm hoping to find a good driver seat or at least a good diaphragm to repair mine.

Today I removed the home made drop pin tow hitch from the van. I temporarily fitted a 50mm towball to see if the rear doors would clear it. I thought I might have to fit a drop plate, but they do clear. I decided it was time to try driving the van again to see how far I would get. Shades on driver door open and chain across (there is a chain you can place across the door when you drive with it open to stop you falling out as no seat belts are fitted yet). I drove for about 3 miles along the lanes to my brothers house without breaking down. He wasn't there so I then drove about another car miles to the petrol station still without breaking down. I brimmed the tank with £35 of unleaded (not sure yet if a lead additive is required.I jumped back in drove the 2 miles home and reached 50mph!! Again without breaking down, but I did nearly have a head on collision with one of the huge bulldozers from the local quarry. Parked it next to the rally car (still with dented from end) as I had to work on the daily. Due to no breaking downs, I'm going to declare the trip a success. A few things noted are the brakes still need bleadiing. The carb still needs a rebuild. I phoned the carburettor exchange bu there on holiday. There is quite a bad transmission noise as you go faster but only on throttle. That screams diff to me but could be something else in the transmission line. And the clutch needs adjusting as the bitting point is really low on the peddle. It's nice to have a bit of interest in this bus again

Lovely old van. These look quite useful size wise for camper vans. Re the carb-go for something Weber 34 assuming it fits the studs and if it doesn't then see about an adaptor. You won't look back. The jetting can be sorted as it's still a standard engine.
